Yes—if your priority is competitive gaming, a compact desk setup, or very high frame rates. A 24.5-inch 1920 × 1080 monitor keeps the entire image easy to scan and generally asks less of your graphics card than higher-resolution alternatives. It is not automatically the best choice for every player: a 27-inch 2560 × 1440 display gives you more screen area and finer detail, which can matter for visually rich games, reading and work. Your choice should follow the games you play, the frame rate your computer can sustain, your viewing distance and how much desk space you have.

What “24.5-inch 1080p” actually means

The 24.5-inch measurement is the diagonal distance across the visible panel. The 16:9 aspect ratio produces a relatively compact horizontal and vertical image that fits on desks where a larger monitor would feel intrusive. “1080p” means 1,920 × 1,080 pixels, also called Full HD. The resolution is lower than 1440p, so a 24.5-inch Full HD panel shows less fine detail than a 27-inch 1440p panel, but it also gives your GPU fewer pixels to render for each frame.

That combination has made 24.5-inch Full HD a long-standing esports format. ASUS characterizes 24-inch 1080p screens as suited to competitive esports and compact setups, while its guide places 27-inch 1440p and 4K displays in broader, mixed-use categories. Those are design recommendations, not rules that override your eyesight or preferences. ASUS’s monitor-size guide (August 17, 2026) explains the distinction.

24.5-inch 1080p versus 27-inch 1440p

The most useful comparison is not “small versus large” in isolation. It is the trade-off among detail, rendering load, viewing area, refresh rate and the work you do between games.

Dell’s 2026 gaming-monitor buying guide similarly treats screen size, resolution, refresh rate and intended use as connected decisions rather than a single ranking.

When 24.5-inch 1080p is the better fit

Competitive games where every frame matters

Fast shooters and other reaction-sensitive games benefit from a frame rate that stays close to the monitor’s refresh rate. Rendering at 1080p is less demanding than rendering at 1440p, so a mid-range gaming PC has a better chance of sustaining high frame rates without lowering image settings as aggressively. The benefit is practical: consistent motion and low latency matter more than additional environmental detail in a match where you are tracking opponents.

Do not interpret that as a guaranteed competitive advantage. Players differ in visual acuity, sensitivity settings, field of view and preferred distance from the screen. A smaller panel can also make it easier to keep the whole image inside your central vision, but that is a comfort and scanning preference rather than a universal performance rule.

Compact or shared desks

A 24.5-inch monitor leaves more room for a keyboard, mouse movement, speakers, notebooks or a second display. It is easier to place on a shallow desk without pushing the panel too close to your eyes. Measure the stand depth as well as the panel: the base and height adjustment can consume more space than the diagonal measurement suggests.

Systems built for high refresh rates at 1080p

Manufacturers offer unusually high refresh-rate modes in this size. The BenQ ZOWIE XL2546K is listed as a 24.5-inch, 1,920 × 1,080 display with up to 240Hz for PC on the manufacturer’s page: XL2546K specifications. ViewSonic lists its 24.5-inch Full HD XG2536 at up to 280Hz overclocked: XG2536 product specifications.

Those are advertised product modes, not independent performance tests. The usable ceiling can depend on the input port, cable, graphics card, operating-system setting and game. An “up to” refresh rate also does not mean your computer will produce that many frames.

When 27-inch 1440p is worth the extra size

You play visually detailed or slower-paced games

Role-playing, strategy, simulation and open-world games often reward a larger view and sharper small text. A 27-inch 1440p panel can show more fine detail in scenery and interfaces without making the image physically tiny. It is also a stronger fit if you want one monitor for games, web browsing, documents and creative applications.

Your graphics card can sustain the target frame rate

1440p places a greater rendering load on the GPU. Check actual frame rates in the games you play at the settings you intend to use, not just the graphics card’s model name. If your system already struggles to maintain your preferred frame rate at 1080p, moving to 1440p may force lower quality settings or a lower refresh target. Conversely, if your system has substantial headroom, the added detail may be more valuable than an extreme refresh ceiling.

You sit far enough away to use the larger canvas

A larger screen is not automatically easier to see. At a very short distance, you may move your eyes or head more often; at a longer distance, a 24.5-inch image may look small. The cited sources do not establish one viewing-distance cutoff that applies to every person. Use your normal posture and adjust the chair, stand height and screen distance before deciding that a panel is too sharp, too large or too small.

What research says about size and aiming

There is evidence that display size can influence aiming, but it does not prove that one specification wins for everyone. A 2023 preprint, Toward Understanding Display Size for FPS Esports Aiming, found a small, statistically significant improvement with larger monitor sizes. Its authors said the result likely combined screen size, resolution and players’ natural viewing distance, so it did not isolate diagonal size as the sole cause. Read the study at arXiv:2305.16953.

NVIDIA reported that its research found 27-inch 1440p displays could improve aiming at small targets by up to 3% compared with traditional 24-inch 1080p displays. That is NVIDIA’s vendor-reported result from 2022, not a guaranteed outcome for every player, game or test setup: NVIDIA’s 1440p G-SYNC display report.

These findings support trying both formats when aiming performance is your concern. They do not justify buying a larger screen if it causes uncomfortable viewing distance, unstable frame rates or excessive eye movement.

Refresh rate, frame rate and connection limits

Match the monitor to the frames you can actually render

Refresh rate is how often the panel can update each second; frame rate is how many frames your game produces. A 240Hz monitor can display up to 240 updates per second, but it cannot create missing frames. If a game runs at 130 frames per second, a 240Hz panel still has headroom, yet the experience is governed by the frames your system delivers and the synchronization mode you use.

Verify the complete signal path

  • Check the monitor manual for the refresh rate supported by each DisplayPort and HDMI input.
  • Use a cable rated for the required resolution and refresh combination.
  • Enable the intended refresh rate in your operating system’s advanced display settings after connecting the monitor.
  • Confirm that the game is running at 1,920 × 1,080 or 2,560 × 1,440 as intended, rather than silently using a lower mode.
  • Check adaptive-sync compatibility if you want variable refresh when frame rates fluctuate.

Overclocked modes, such as the XG2536’s advertised 280Hz setting, deserve extra caution: availability can vary by input and configuration, and the manufacturer’s specification is not a promise of identical behavior on every computer.

How to choose for your own desk and games

  1. List your primary games. Separate competitive shooters from slower single-player, strategy or simulation titles. The first group usually puts more value on sustained frame rate; the second often benefits more from detail and workspace.
  2. Measure your desk. Record usable width, depth, monitor-arm clearance and your normal eye position. Include the stand or arm’s footprint.
  3. Measure your system’s real frame rates. Use the games and quality settings you actually play. Note average and difficult-scene performance rather than relying on a peak number.
  4. Set a refresh target. Choose a refresh rate your system can approach consistently. A stable, well-matched target is more useful than paying for a ceiling you rarely reach.
  5. Consider non-gaming work. If the same screen is used for documents, timelines, coding or multitasking, the 27-inch 1440p workspace may save scrolling and window juggling.
  6. Test viewing comfort. Sit in your usual position for a full session. Look for text clarity, edge visibility, neck movement and whether you naturally lean forward.
  7. Check the exact model’s specifications. Confirm ports, supported refresh modes, adaptive sync, stand adjustment, panel characteristics and warranty for your region before ordering.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying a 240Hz panel for a computer that cannot approach it

Symptom: the game remains far below the monitor’s refresh ceiling, or frame pacing is erratic. Fix: prioritize a monitor whose resolution and refresh target match your measured performance; reduce unnecessary GPU load only if the resulting image remains acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every port supports the headline refresh rate

Symptom: the operating system offers only 60Hz, 120Hz or another lower option. Fix: consult the model’s input table, use the specified port and cable, then select the mode manually in advanced display settings.

Choosing by diagonal size without considering distance

Symptom: the 27-inch display feels overwhelming up close, or the 24.5-inch display feels cramped from across the desk. Fix: reposition the screen and chair, adjust scaling and text size, and reassess before returning the monitor.

Expecting 1440p to improve every competitive result

Symptom: the sharper image does not translate into better aim, or performance drops after upgrading. Fix: separate visual detail from input consistency. The cited aiming findings are limited and attributed; they are not a guarantee. Use the resolution that lets you maintain comfortable visibility and a stable frame rate.

Ignoring ergonomics and panel behavior

Symptom: eye strain, glare or an uncomfortable posture despite good specifications. Fix: check height, tilt, brightness, room lighting, viewing distance and the panel’s motion behavior. Refresh rate alone cannot correct poor placement or an unsuitable panel.

Which option should you buy?

Choose 24.5-inch 1080p when competitive play is dominant, desk space is limited, and your computer can exploit a high refresh rate at Full HD. Choose 27-inch 1440p when you want a larger, sharper workspace for detailed games and everyday computing and your GPU can sustain the frame rate you consider acceptable. If you are undecided, compare both at your normal viewing distance and judge the complete setup—image detail, frame consistency, eye movement and desk comfort—rather than treating size or resolution as a standalone performance score.
