12:00 PM is noon, and 12:00 AM is midnight in common 12-hour clock usage. But those labels are ambiguous at the exact boundary between days: when precision matters, write “noon” or “midnight” instead. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) advises against using 12 a.m. or 12 p.m. for those boundary moments.

Why 12 PM means noon—and why the label can confuse

A.m. abbreviates ante meridiem, meaning “before noon”; p.m. abbreviates post meridiem, meaning “after noon.” In everyday clock and calendar use, noon is labeled 12:00 PM and midnight 12:00 AM. Canada’s Translation Bureau explicitly maps 12:00 p.m. to noon and 12:00 a.m. to midnight in its 24-hour system guidance.

The difficulty is that noon is neither before nor after itself. Midnight is the point twelve hours before and twelve hours after noon. NIST therefore calls both 12 a.m. and 12 p.m. ambiguous when used for the exact moments of noon or midnight. The Chicago Manual of Style likewise describes the labels as illogical and potentially ambiguous, while noting that many readers understand them in the familiar way; see its usage Q&A.

Does 12 AM mean midnight?

Yes, in common usage, 12:00 AM means midnight. The caution is about clarity, not the familiar convention: a reader may understand the label, but a deadline, schedule, or system entry should not depend on that assumption when the exact boundary matters.

Why “midnight on Friday” can be unclear

Midnight sits at the edge between two dates. “Midnight on Friday” may be understood as the start of Friday or the end of Friday, depending on context. Microsoft’s style guide defines midnight as the beginning of the new day, not the end of the old one, but readers may not share that interpretation; its date and time terms guide recommends using noon or midnight rather than 12 a.m. or 12 p.m.

For a deadline tied to a specific date, name the date and make the intended side of midnight explicit. NIST suggests using a nearby time such as 11:59 p.m. on the preceding date or 12:01 a.m. on the following date. For example, “Submit by 11:59 p.m. Friday” clearly means before Saturday begins; “Submit by 12:01 a.m. Saturday” clearly means shortly after Friday ends.

What to write when the time must be unmistakable

Situation Clearer choice Why
General prose “Noon” or “midnight” Spelling out the moment avoids the 12 a.m./p.m. ambiguity. The Australian Government Style Manual also recommends these words in its time and date guidance.
Deadline tied to a calendar date State the date and, if useful, specify 11:59 p.m. on the previous date or 12:01 a.m. on the next This identifies which side of midnight the deadline falls on, as NIST advises.
Data exchange or cross-border communication Use 24-hour notation, with the date and time zone when needed It removes a.m./p.m. from the time. Canada’s Translation Bureau gives 12:00 for noon and 00:00 or 24:00 for midnight; conventions can vary by system, so follow the applicable standard.
Event listing for people in multiple locations Include the time zone Microsoft recommends naming the time zone so readers know which local time applies.

NIST describes 0000 as the beginning of a date and 2400 as its end. Not every system accepts 24:00, so use it only where the relevant standard or software allows it. If there is any doubt, spell out the date and use “midnight” or a nearby time that makes the boundary clear.
