iPronics did commercialize and ship its SmartLight programmable photonic processor in February 2023. The company announced initial deliveries to unnamed customers in the United States and Europe across telecommunications, optical networking and technology; that announcement proves an early commercial shipment, not widespread production deployment. By August 2026, iPronics’ public commercial focus had shifted toward the ONE Series, rack-ready silicon-photonics optical switches for reconfigurable AI data-center networks.
This is the significance of the story: iPronics moved a reconfigurable photonic platform beyond laboratory demonstrations, then applied the same software-defined philosophy to optical circuit switching. The company’s performance and cost figures remain company claims whose public methodology is not fully specified.
What iPronics shipped in 2023
In an announcement dated February 8, 2023, iPronics said it had shipped initial SmartLight processors to several companies. The customers were not named; the announcement described them as a multinational telecommunications and electronics company, a European optical-networking company and a large United States technology company. The announcement is evidence of initial commercial shipments, but it does not disclose unit volume, revenue, purchase terms or production-scale deployment. iPronics’ shipment announcement was also covered by All About Circuits.

The product was therefore a platform, not merely a bare photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Its value depended on the combination of the reconfigurable optical fabric, electronics, calibration and programming tools.
Why programmable photonics matters
A conventional PIC is usually designed for a particular function and then fabricated as a comparatively fixed circuit. Changing that function can require a new design, fabrication run, package, control electronics and qualification cycle. Those steps add nonrecurring engineering cost and can make experimentation slow.
iPronics’ alternative is a mesh of tunable optical elements. Software changes the states of those elements so the same physical fabric can implement different optical paths and transfer functions. The company has used the term Field Programmable Photonic Gate Array (FPPGA) for this architectural idea; see its explanation of the terminology at iPronics’ FPPGA announcement.
An FPGA analogy is useful but limited. An electronic FPGA reconfigures digital logic, whereas a programmable photonic processor reconfigures light propagation and optical processing. It still needs lasers or other optical sources, detectors, drivers, monitoring, calibration, packaging and software. “Programmable” does not mean that SmartLight was a photonic CPU capable of running arbitrary computer programs.

- Coherent mixers
- Matrix-multiplication and other linear operations
Its 2023 event material described demonstrations involving automated optical interconnects, tunable filters and complex beam-splitter configurations. Those demonstrations show configurability; they do not, by themselves, establish deployment in a carrier network or a production AI system. Relevant examples appear in iPronics’ ECOC material and its OFC material.
Where the platform fits
Optical communications
Programmable filters, equalizers, routing functions and coherent processing can help engineers prototype wavelength-division-multiplexing and other optical-communications functions without fabricating a new PIC for every variation.
RF, 5G and 6G photonics
iPronics identified RF photonics and 5G/6G signal processing as target applications. The public evidence supports an application target and development platform, not confirmed commercial carrier deployment.
AI and machine-learning research
Photonic circuits can perform selected linear transformations and signal-processing operations efficiently, making them relevant to optical-computing and machine-learning research. The 2023 material does not establish SmartLight as a drop-in GPU replacement or a complete AI accelerator.
Other proposed domains
The company also listed data centers, neuromorphic computing, LiDAR, autonomous driving, satellite communications, quantum technologies and IoT among possible application areas. These should be read as potential markets rather than documented production deployments.

How strong are the headline performance claims?
iPronics said the platform could use up to 10 times less power and operate up to 20 times faster than electrical chips, and that custom photonic-IC development could be reduced from about 18 months to a couple of weeks. These are company claims. The cited public material does not identify the comparison hardware, workload, data rate, measurement conditions or whether optical conversion, control electronics and cooling were included. “Faster” could refer to latency, throughput or a particular signal-processing operation.
Those figures should therefore not be treated as general-purpose, independently verified benchmarks. A complete system can consume significant power in lasers, modulators, photodetectors, drivers, monitors, digital controllers and cooling even when its optical core is efficient.
From SmartLight to iPronics ONE
As of August 18, 2026, iPronics’ public website emphasizes the ONE Series, a rack-ready silicon-photonics optical switch for AI data-center networks rather than presenting SmartLight mainly as a general-purpose development processor. The product page describes 32- to 256-port configurations, software-defined control, integrated driving electronics, telemetry and O-band operation: ONE product page.
iPronics’ technology page describes Python APIs, automated orchestration, software-controlled calibration, real-time telemetry and programmable optical unit cells: optical-technology overview. The company says individual programmable elements can be reconfigured in microseconds, while the product page uses “sub-ms range” language. Those statements may refer to different layers—an element, a path, a control loop or complete network reconfiguration—so they should not be collapsed into one universal switching-speed figure.
For OFC 2026 in Los Angeles, iPronics said it would showcase what it called the first commercially available silicon-photonics optical circuit switch, with multiple radix configurations in the ONE family. That announcement supports a progression from shipped programmable processors to commercial optical-switching hardware; it does not establish hyperscaler-scale deployment or market share. See the OFC 2026 announcement.

Optical circuit switching is not packet switching
An optical circuit switch changes connectivity between optical ports or paths. It generally does not inspect and route every packet in the way an electronic Ethernet or InfiniBand switch does. In an AI cluster, an optical switch can therefore complement packet switches by changing topology between compute, accelerator and storage resources; it does not eliminate all transceivers, electronic switching or networking protocols.
How to evaluate an iPronics platform
Match the product to the job
First determine whether the requirement is research prototyping, filtering, beamforming, equalization, matrix operations, RF processing, static optical provisioning or dynamic AI-cluster networking. A rack optical switch and a programmable photonic development processor solve different problems.
Check optical specifications
- Operating band and wavelength count
- Per-port data rate and fiber compatibility
- Insertion loss, crosstalk and extinction ratio
- Attenuation or gain-control range
- End-to-end link budget with the existing transceivers
SmartLight was described in C-band, while the current ONE product is described as O-band. These are different product contexts.
Measure complete-system reconfiguration
Ask whether the requirement is static provisioning, millisecond changes, microsecond changes, closed-loop optimization or autonomous recovery. The relevant metric is the complete system’s reconfiguration time, including control, calibration and orchestration—not only the response of one tunable optical element.
Assess software and operations
- API and Python support
- Telemetry and monitoring interfaces
- Calibration workflow and drift handling
- Network-orchestration integration
- Automation, logging and failure recovery
Ask about deployment economics
For a rack installation, request system-level power, cooling, dimensions, fiber management, redundancy, serviceability, support terms, manufacturing capacity and warranty information. iPronics advertises a “less than $100 per port path” for ONE, but this is a company-stated cost target or pathway, not a published list price or guaranteed purchase price.

Trade-offs that buyers should expect
- Calibration complexity: temperature changes and component variation can require monitoring and recalibration.
- Optical loss: complex paths can accumulate loss and constrain link budgets.
- Control overhead: drivers, digital controllers and telemetry add electronics and software dependencies.
- Debugging: a software-defined optical mesh can be harder to diagnose than a fixed circuit.
- Commercial transparency: public materials do not disclose customer identities, unit volumes, revenue, production backlog, independent benchmark reports or standard prices.
What the 2023 commercialization actually proves
The strongest defensible conclusion is narrow but important: iPronics announced initial commercial shipments of a programmable photonic processor in February 2023, combining a reconfigurable PIC, control electronics and software. That milestone showed that reusable photonic hardware had reached customer delivery. It did not prove mass adoption, universal power or speed advantages, GPU replacement or broad telecom deployment.
By 2026, iPronics was presenting programmable optical circuit switching for AI infrastructure through ONE. The strategic shift suggests a move from a broadly configurable development platform toward a more focused networking product, while the public evidence still leaves large-scale deployment and independently verified superiority unresolved.
