What iPhone storage and iCloud storage do

Apple describes iCloud storage as a way to store photos, files, notes and other data in the cloud and keep it up to date across devices signed in with the same Apple Account. It defines device storage as the storage on the Apple device itself. Apple Support’s comparison of iCloud and device storage explains both terms.

Check which storage is full
Check the two meters separately on your iPhone. Menu wording can vary by iOS version.
- For iPhone storage: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. This shows local usage and recommendations.
- For iCloud storage: open Settings > [your name] > iCloud, then view Storage or Manage Storage. Apple’s labels may vary by software version.

If iCloud storage is full
A full iCloud account can stop device backups, new iCloud Photos uploads, and updates to iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps; iCloud email may also be affected, according to Apple Support’s iCloud storage guidance.
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review the storage breakdown.
- Remove backups, files or messages you no longer need only after confirming that anything important is preserved. Apple provides storage-management guidance at Manage your iCloud storage.
- If you need more cloud capacity for backups, iCloud Photos or iCloud Drive, consider iCloud+. Apple says an account starts with 5 GB free; that allowance may not be enough for your data.
To buy or change an iCloud+ plan, use the instructions for your iOS version. Apple’s current UK guidance separates the steps for iOS 18.4–26, iOS 18–18.3, iOS 17 and earlier, and iOS 27 and later. Plan options and prices vary by region, so check the choices shown on your device rather than relying on a single menu path or price: Apple’s iCloud+ purchase instructions.

If iPhone storage is full
More iCloud storage alone will not fix a shortage caused by apps, downloads or other local content. Start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage; review the recommendations and app-by-app usage, then delete or offload content you no longer need.
For a photo-heavy library
If you want your full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and have enough iCloud capacity for them, turn on iCloud Photos and choose Optimize Storage. Apple says full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud, with space-saving copies stored on the iPhone when needed. This can reduce the local space used by photos, but it depends on cloud capacity and does not help with unrelated local content such as apps. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance.

If you want full-resolution originals kept on the phone, choose Download and Keep Originals instead. That uses iPhone storage. Apple explains the two choices in its iPhone User Guide.
For an offline archive
If you do not want some photos or videos in iCloud, Apple recommends transferring them to a computer when you need more room on the device. A computer archive, potentially on an external SSD, is separate from iPhone capacity and does not add storage to the phone. Confirm the computer, cable and drive compatibility for your particular setup; Apple’s guidance supports transferring media to a computer, not any specific SSD or direct-to-iPhone drive. Which should you buy?
- Choose iCloud+ if the iCloud meter is the problem or you need more room for backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive or other iCloud data.
- Do not buy iCloud+ expecting more room for apps or downloads on the phone. Manage local content instead; Optimize Storage may help specifically with photos if you want to use iCloud Photos.
- If you are buying a phone and regularly run out of local capacity, consider a device with more built-in storage. iCloud can store or sync selected data, but it cannot change the phone’s fixed capacity.
