The iPhone SE (2020), officially the iPhone SE (2nd generation), is smaller and lighter, has a Home button with Touch ID, and uses the newer A13 Bionic chip. The iPhone XR has a larger 6.1-inch screen, Face ID, and a longer Apple-stated video-playback estimate. For an XR owner, the SE is a change in size and controls—not an across-the-board upgrade. Apple lists the SE (2nd generation), but not the XR, as compatible with iOS 26.

Apple’s technical specifications document the hardware and playback estimates for each model: iPhone SE (2nd generation) technical specifications and iPhone XR technical specifications. Apple’s iOS 26 compatible-model list includes the second-generation SE; the XR does not appear on it. Compatibility with iOS 26 establishes current listed support, not how long either phone will receive future major iOS versions.
Which phone has the better screen and size for you?
Choose the iPhone XR for more viewing area
The XR’s 6.1-inch display gives reading, video, and other on-screen content more room than the SE’s 4.7-inch display. Both are LCDs, and Apple lists both at 326 pixels per inch and 625 nits typical brightness. Those similar figures do not make the screens the same size: the XR is the better fit if screen area is your priority.
Choose the iPhone SE for a smaller, lighter handset
At 148 g, the SE is 46 g lighter than the 194 g XR. Its smaller body is the more natural choice if you prefer a compact phone or find a larger handset awkward to carry or use. The trade-off is less display area.

Touch ID or Face ID: which interaction do you prefer?
The SE puts its fingerprint sensor in the physical Home button, while the XR uses Face ID through its TrueDepth camera. Neither authentication method is universally better; the practical choice depends on whether you prefer a fingerprint and Home button or face authentication with an all-screen front.
Is the iPhone SE (2020) faster or better for iOS compatibility?
Apple specifies an A13 Bionic chip in the SE and an A12 Bionic chip in the XR, so the SE has the newer chip generation. That specification alone is not a measured speed comparison. For software compatibility, Apple’s iOS 26 list includes the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and omits the XR. This tells you which model is listed for that release, but does not guarantee the SE will receive future major-version updates for a particular number of years.

Are the cameras different?
Both phones have a 12MP wide rear camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, and 4K video recording up to 60 fps, according to Apple’s specifications. Apple describes different computational-photo features and Portrait Lighting effect counts for the models. The shared megapixel count is not enough to establish that their camera results are identical, or that one is categorically better.
Which phone lasts longer on a charge?
Apple’s product specifications state up to 13 hours of video playback for the SE and up to 16 hours for the XR. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent comparative test results or a promise about the runtime of a specific used phone. Both models are several years old, so battery age and the condition of the particular device matter more to a used-phone buyer than launch-era estimates alone.

What should an XR owner consider before switching to the SE?
The SE is a sensible switch if you specifically want a smaller, lighter phone, Touch ID, and a model currently listed by Apple as compatible with iOS 26. It may feel like a downgrade in everyday use if you rely on the XR’s larger screen or prefer Face ID. The newer chip does not erase those differences in how the phones feel and work.
If buying a used or refurbished replacement, check the individual handset rather than assuming its condition from its model specifications:

- Review battery health and whether the battery has been serviced or replaced.
- Confirm the phone is not activation-locked and can be set up by you.
- Inspect the screen, cameras, buttons, and body for damage or wear.
- Verify storage capacity and carrier compatibility for your needs.
- Read the seller’s return terms and confirm whether the device is used or refurbished.
Does either phone’s water resistance guarantee protection?
Apple lists both models as IP67 under IEC 60529, tested for up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. This is a test rating, not a guarantee that a particular used phone remains water-resistant. Apple’s XR support information notes that water resistance is not permanent and may decline with normal wear; do not treat the rating as assurance against liquid damage on an older handset.
