A November 2025 report described five capabilities under consideration: photo messaging, easier satellite connections, offline Maps, possible satellite-based 5G, and tools for third-party apps. They remain reported plans, with no confirmed release date, compatible iPhone list, pricing, or technical specifications.
What are the five reported iPhone satellite features?
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on November 9, 2025, that Apple was planning or exploring a broader set of satellite capabilities. Tom’s Guide summarized the ideas the next day. Neither report makes them announced or scheduled Apple features.
- Send photos by satellite. Current satellite messaging is limited by bandwidth; the reported upgrade would add photo sharing.
- Connect with fewer view-of-sky restrictions. Apple was reportedly working to make satellite use more natural, potentially including use indoors or with an iPhone in a pocket. No technical details or performance guarantees have been reported.
- Use Apple Maps over satellite. The reported idea is to access mapping and navigation without cellular or Wi-Fi.
- Support possible 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN). This approach could extend mobile connectivity through satellite infrastructure, but the report does not specify how it would work on iPhone.
- Give developers satellite tools. A reported developer API could let some third-party apps add satellite communication features. The report does not suggest that every app or capability would be supported.
Tom’s Guide’s summary of the reported plans outlines the five ideas; Bloomberg’s November 9, 2025 report is the original coverage. Apple has not confirmed these features.
What iPhone satellite features work now?
Apple says iPhone 14 or later can use its satellite features in supported regions. Depending on local availability, the current tools include texting emergency services, requesting roadside assistance, messaging friends and family, and sharing location. These built-in features are not ordinary broadband or a replacement for cellular service. Apple says users should be outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon; terrain, buildings, and heavy foliage may block a connection. Under ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon, a message might take 30 seconds or more to send, according to Apple’s 2026 guidance. Difficult conditions can stretch that to several minutes; 30 seconds is an estimate, not a guaranteed maximum or average. See Apple’s satellite messaging connection guidance.
Carrier-provided satellite service is separate
Some carriers offer their own satellite features. Those services can have separate device, iOS, carrier, location, and plan requirements; some carriers may provide limited data for selected apps. Fees or data rates may apply, so check the carrier’s current terms rather than assuming Apple’s built-in features and carrier service have the same coverage or conditions.

What does the Amazon Leo agreement confirm?
Amazon, Globalstar, and Apple announced an agreement under which Amazon Leo will support current and future satellite features for iPhone and Apple Watch. Amazon says deployment of its next-generation direct-to-device satellite system is planned to begin in 2028. That is an infrastructure plan—not a launch date for the five reported iPhone features, nor confirmation that they will ship. The announcement says Apple users will continue to have access to existing satellite features, including Emergency SOS, Messages, Find My, and Roadside Assistance. Does Apple’s free satellite access extension apply to every iPhone owner?
No. Apple’s September 2026 iPhone Duo announcement extended free access for an additional year only for eligible existing iPhone 14, 15, and 16 users who activated in a supported country before the stated deadline. Should you buy an iPhone for the reported upgrade?
No specific iPhone has been confirmed for the reported features, and Apple has published no release timing, price, or technical requirements for them. iPhone 14 or later is the family Apple identifies for its existing satellite features, but that compatibility does not establish support for a future roadmap. If satellite access matters now, check Apple’s regional availability and the relevant carrier’s terms for your device and location.
