Wi-Fi is another, and a Mac or Windows computer can also connect by USB. In every case, Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular connection—not a Wi-Fi connection the iPhone is already using.
How Personal Hotspot and Bluetooth tethering relate
Personal Hotspot is the iPhone feature that shares its cellular internet connection. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are wireless links a client device can use to reach that shared connection. With Wi-Fi, the client joins the iPhone’s hotspot network; with Bluetooth, the devices pair and the client sets up a Bluetooth network connection.
Apple’s guide describes Bluetooth as an alternative to Wi-Fi: “You can connect a Mac or Windows device to the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi.” Apple’s iPhone User Guide also documents USB tethering for Mac and Windows computers.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB compared
| Method | What the client does | Supported devices and requirements | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Joins the iPhone’s hotspot network and enters its password if prompted. Eligible Apple devices may use Instant Hotspot without entering a password. | Apple lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and other Wi-Fi-capable devices. | Wireless and broadly compatible; the client needs Wi-Fi. Apple’s guide does not give a comparative speed figure. |
| Bluetooth | Pairs with the iPhone and sets up a Bluetooth network connection. The iPhone may need to remain on its Bluetooth settings screen during discovery or setup. | Apple provides connection instructions for Mac and Windows. Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices. | Wireless, but involves pairing and network setup. Apple does not publish a Wi-Fi-versus-Bluetooth speed or battery comparison. |
| USB | Connects the iPhone and computer with a compatible cable; accept trust or access prompts if they appear. | Apple lists Mac and Windows. Windows requires Apple Devices or iTunes installed. | Requires a physical cable compatible with both devices’ ports. The guide does not rank USB against wireless methods by speed. |
How to connect a device
Connect over Wi-Fi
- On the iPhone, open Settings and go to Personal Hotspot. Turn on Allow Others to Join when connecting a device that is not eligible to use Instant Hotspot through your Apple account or Family Sharing.
- On the other device, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the iPhone’s hotspot network, and enter the hotspot password if asked.
Connect over Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth on both the iPhone and the Mac or Windows device.
- Keep the iPhone discoverable during discovery and setup; Apple notes it may need to remain on its Bluetooth settings screen.
- Pair the devices and follow the computer’s Bluetooth network setup instructions. The exact steps vary by computer platform, so follow its manufacturer’s instructions where needed.
Connect over USB
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac or Windows computer using the included cable or another cable that matches the ports on both devices.
- Accept any trust or access prompts shown on the iPhone or computer.
- On Windows, install Apple Devices or iTunes for USB tethering.
What to check before choosing a method
- Carrier support: Personal Hotspot is not available with every carrier, and additional fees may apply. Check that your plan includes it before troubleshooting a connection.
- Device limits: The number of devices that can connect at once varies by carrier and iPhone model; Apple does not give one universal limit in its guide.
- Proximity: Apple gives 30 feet (10 meters) as the general distance guideline for Personal Hotspot and Instant Hotspot setup.
- Compatibility: Wi-Fi is an option for Wi-Fi-capable clients; Apple’s Bluetooth instructions cover Mac and Windows, and its USB instructions cover Mac and Windows.
Speed and battery: what Apple’s guidance establishes
Apple’s guide does not provide a direct speed benchmark or battery-use comparison for Wi-Fi versus Bluetooth tethering, so there is no source-backed universal winner to cite. Actual results can depend on device and carrier conditions. Apple says devices automatically disconnect when the hotspot is not in use to save battery life, but does not quantify the relative battery draw of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple notes that turning on Maximize Compatibility may reduce performance. Its troubleshooting guidance also warns that this setting may reduce Wi-Fi security, so treat it as a possible troubleshooting step rather than a default setting.

- Confirm with your carrier that your plan supports Personal Hotspot.
- Restart both the iPhone and the client device, and install current software on them.
- If the problem continues, consider resetting the iPhone’s network settings. This also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets mobile data, VPN, and APN settings.
- If troubleshooting a Wi-Fi connection, you can try Maximize Compatibility while bearing in mind its potential performance and Wi-Fi security trade-offs.
