SOS Only means your iPhone cannot get full cellular service from your carrier. It may still be able to place an emergency call using another carrier’s network, if one is available. It does not mean your iPhone is connected to a satellite. Emergency SOS via satellite is a separate emergency messaging option for supported iPhones when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable and a regular emergency call cannot connect.

How SOS Only and Emergency SOS via satellite differ

Feature What it means What to do
SOS Only Your iPhone lacks full cellular service from your own provider. An emergency call may still connect through another carrier if one is available in your location. Apple explains the iPhone status icons and emergency calling when your carrier’s network is unavailable. If you need emergency help, try calling emergency services. The status indicator by itself does not show that a satellite connection is active.
Emergency SOS via satellite A satellite-based emergency text flow for compatible iPhones, used when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable and an ordinary emergency call does not connect. Apple’s satellite instructions describe the process. Try an emergency call first. If it fails, follow the iPhone’s prompts to use Emergency Text via Satellite, where the feature is available.

What SOS Only means on an iPhone

SOS Only is a cellular-service status: your phone is not receiving full service from your own provider. It does not, on its own, tell you whether another carrier has coverage or whether satellite service is available. Depending on local network availability, the iPhone may still be able to call emergency services over another carrier’s network.

So, if you see SOS or SOS Only and need urgent help, do not assume that the indicator means you have no way to call. Try the emergency call. If it cannot connect and your iPhone and location support satellite service, use the satellite option presented on your phone.

What Emergency SOS via satellite does

Emergency SOS via satellite lets a supported iPhone send emergency information by satellite when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage and a regular emergency call cannot connect. The phone guides you through a short questionnaire and a text exchange with emergency services. Apple says the flow can share your answers, location (including elevation), and battery level; Medical ID and emergency-contact details may also be shared if you have configured them. Availability and the information shared depend on the service and your settings. See Apple’s instructions for using Emergency SOS via satellite.

Satellite messaging needs a clear view of the sky and horizon. Buildings, terrain, and dense foliage can obstruct the connection. Apple advises: “To help you connect to a satellite, make sure that you’re outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon.”

How to use satellite emergency messaging

  1. Try calling emergency services first. Apple’s guidance is to attempt an emergency call even if your carrier network is unavailable.
  2. If the call will not connect, follow the on-screen satellite prompts. Choose Emergency Text via Satellite when it is offered, answer the questions, and follow the iPhone’s directions to connect.
  3. Move to a place with an unobstructed view. Go outdoors if possible, with a clear view of both sky and horizon, and follow the positioning instructions on screen.
  4. Stay in the session and respond. Keep the iPhone available for messages from the responder and provide the requested information.

Requirements and availability

Emergency SOS via satellite is available on iPhone 14 or later, but a compatible model alone is not enough. Apple’s current availability guidance lists supported locations and region-specific minimum iOS versions; local approvals and market requirements can also affect access. The service also requires that cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, a normal emergency call cannot connect, and the phone can establish a satellite link. Check Apple’s current satellite feature availability information for your country or region and software requirements before relying on the feature. These details can change.

  • Know that obstructions can prevent a satellite connection, even on a compatible iPhone.

If you start an emergency call or satellite session by mistake

Do not hang up or end the session. Apple says to wait for a responder to answer and then explain that you do not need help. In its user guide, Apple states: “If an emergency call has been made and you don’t need emergency services, don’t hang up. Wait until a responder answers, then explain that you don’t need help.”
