Always-On display keeps a dimmed version of your Lock Screen visible; StandBy turns a charging iPhone placed on its side into a full-screen clock, photo, widget, or Live Activities display. They serve different purposes. StandBy works on iPhone models generally, but staying visible continuously depends on Always-On display support and StandBy’s own display setting.

Apple explains that “With the Always-On display (on supported models), StandBy stays on to show useful information.” Apple’s StandBy instructions cover the charging setup and display options.
Which iPhones support Always-On display?
Apple’s current support list includes iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max; iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max; iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max; and iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Apple says Always-On display is off by default on iPhone Air. Check your model and its Settings, since Apple can revise availability. Apple’s current display support information has the supported-model details.
StandBy is documented for iPhone generally; an iPhone without Always-On display can still show StandBy, but may need to be woken by tapping the screen, gently nudging the surface, or asking Siri.

Why the display may go dark
Always-On display
Apple says Always-On display can operate at a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz. It may switch off automatically if the phone is face down or obstructed, is not near a paired Apple Watch, starts a CarPlay session, uses Continuity Camera, has Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus enabled, or reaches the user’s usual bedtime. You can turn it off at Settings > Display & Brightness. See Apple’s Always-On display guide.
StandBy
StandBy requires the iPhone to be charging and placed on its side. On models without Always-On display, wake the view with a tap, a gentle nudge to the surface, or Siri. StandBy has its own display choices: Automatic turns the display off when the phone is not in use and the room is dark; After 20 Seconds turns it off after that interval; and Never keeps it on. Night Mode can tint the screen red in low ambient light. Apple documents these controls in its StandBy guide.

Which one should you use?
- Choose Always-On display for a quick glance at your Lock Screen without picking up or waking a supported iPhone.
- Use StandBy when the phone is charging on its side and you want a larger, selectable clock, photo, widget, or Live Activities view.
- Use both together if your iPhone supports Always-On display and you want StandBy to stay visible while charging.
A MagSafe-compatible stand can make the sideways charging position convenient, but Apple’s documented setup requires a charger and a sideways position—not a particular stand or charger type. StandBy can remember a preferred view at each MagSafe charging location.

Apple’s cited documentation does not provide a controlled battery-use comparison between Always-On display and StandBy, so it does not establish that either feature consistently uses less power. StandBy’s display duration and Always-On display’s automatic shutoff behavior can vary with their settings and conditions.
