iOS 27.0.1 is not a fix for an iPhone 18 Pro Max that has already lost AT&T service. Apple says the iOS update and an AT&T carrier settings update are intended to help prevent the issue from occurring. If your phone is already affected, Apple says software cannot reactivate service; contact Apple or AT&T about a replacement.
What is happening?
Apple has identified an issue affecting a “small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T. It may cause loss of cellular service and prevent calls. AT&T’s reported customer alert also warned that texts, data, and even 911 calls might fail. Reports describe affected phones displaying SOS and losing access to calls, texts, and data. This is a specific iPhone-and-carrier issue; the reports do not establish a wider problem affecting all iPhones or other carriers.
Apple’s statement, reported by 9to5Mac on October 2, 2026, said: “These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.” That describes prevention, not recovery for a phone that has already lost service.
What to do, depending on your phone’s status
If your iPhone 18 Pro Max still has service
- Install iOS 27.0.1 if you have not already. Apple urged iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to update.
- Accept an AT&T carrier settings update if prompted. MacRumors reported that you can also check manually by opening Settings > General > About and waiting for an update prompt. The automatic rollout was reported as potentially taking up to 14 days, so timing may vary.
These updates are preventive measures according to Apple, not a guarantee that a phone is unaffected.

If service has already failed
Contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location, to ask about replacement. Apple’s reported guidance is that software cannot restore service on devices already affected and that those devices need replacement, as MacRumors reported October 2, 2026. Do not rely on reinstalling the update or generic signal accessories as a remedy.
If the phone cannot make calls, texts, or data connections, do not assume an emergency call will work. AT&T’s reported alert specifically included 911 calls among services that might fail; use another available phone to contact emergency services if needed.

What is known—and what remains unclear
Confirmed company guidance
- Apple identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T.
- Apple recommends iOS 27.0.1 and says a carrier settings update is intended to help prevent the problem.
- Apple says a device already affected cannot have service reactivated through software and needs replacement.
- AT&T has said it is working with Apple and urged owners of the affected model to update, according to MacRumors.
Cause and scale are not established
Apple has not disclosed a root cause or exact number of affected phones. “Small number” is a qualitative description, not an incident count or prevalence rate. GSMArena discussed the possibility that the U.S. Pro Max’s Qualcomm modem, rather than the smaller Pro’s C2 modem, could be relevant; that is speculation, not a confirmed diagnosis. Individual user reports, including posts on Reddit’s r/ATT, can illustrate what people experienced but do not establish the cause, overall frequency, or a universal outcome.
