The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a substantial upgrade from the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but it is not an automatic buy. Its clearest advantages are longer Apple-rated battery life, a more flexible camera system, USB-C, newer performance, and Apple Intelligence support. Keep the 13 Pro Max if it still meets your needs; if battery life is the only problem, a battery replacement may be a better-value fix.

The 13 Pro Max remains compatible with the iOS versions listed on Apple’s iOS compatibility page, but it cannot run Apple Intelligence. The comparison below focuses on the U.S. purchase context where price and eSIM-only activation are discussed; SIM configurations and some features vary by region.

Design, size, and display

The 17 Pro Max gives you a larger 6.9-inch display, compared with 6.7 inches on the 13 Pro Max, but both phones already have OLED screens and ProMotion. In other words, the 13 Pro Max owner is not moving from a basic 60Hz screen to a high-refresh one. The practical display gains are more room for video, games, reading, and editing, plus the 17 Pro Max’s newer interface and front-glass design.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, US Version, 2TB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

What changes in the hand

Apple lists the 17 Pro Max at approximately 6.43 inches high, 3.07 inches wide, 0.34 inches thick, and 8.22 ounces (233 grams). It has an aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, a Ceramic Shield back, Dynamic Island, an Action button, and Camera Control. The 13 Pro Max has a stainless-steel frame, glass back, notch, and Ring/Silent switch. Apple describes Ceramic Shield 2 as offering improved scratch resistance; that does not mean the screen is scratch-proof or establish that the whole phone is more durable.

The 17 Pro Max is still a very large phone, and it is larger than the 13 Pro Max. If one-handed handling is already difficult, this is not an ergonomic solution; consider a smaller current model instead. Existing 13 Pro Max cases and screen protectors will not fit the redesigned phone.

Camera comparison

Rear cameras and zoom

The 17 Pro Max upgrades all three rear cameras to 48MP. Apple lists a 48MP Main camera, 48MP Ultra Wide, and 48MP Telephoto, with 2x optical-quality framing from the main camera and 4x telephoto plus 8x optical-quality zoom options from the telephoto camera. It also supports up to 40x digital zoom and 48MP macro photography.

The 13 Pro Max has three 12MP rear cameras and 3x optical zoom in. Its camera system remains capable for ordinary snapshots, but the 17 Pro Max offers more flexibility for distant subjects, ultra-wide scenes, and close-up work. That can matter for travel, wildlife, sports, concerts, architecture, and people who crop photos after capture. More megapixels do not automatically mean better photos in every setting; lighting, processing, movement, and framing also affect the result.

Front camera and video

The 17 Pro Max’s 18MP Center Stage front camera adds tap-to-zoom and rotate, Center Stage framing for photos and video calls, ultra-stabilized video, and Dual Capture. The 13 Pro Max’s 12MP TrueDepth camera lacks those newer framing capabilities. They are most useful for group selfies, video calls, creator-facing recording, or keeping a moving subject in frame.

Both phones offer creator-oriented formats, including ProRAW; the 13 Pro Max also supports ProRes, with Cinematic mode limited to 1080p at 30 frames per second. The 17 Pro Max’s newer camera system and features are the stronger reason to upgrade for frequent video makers, but file size and storage needs matter: high-resolution photos and video can fill a phone quickly.

Performance and gaming

The A19 Pro is four generations newer than the A15 Bionic. Apple’s specifications list a six-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing for the 17 Pro Max; the 13 Pro Max has a five-core GPU. That newer graphics platform is more relevant to demanding games, 3D work, video exports, and intensive creative apps than to routine tasks such as messaging, browsing, and streaming.

For everyday use, the 13 Pro Max may still feel responsive if its battery and storage are in good condition. The 17 Pro Max has more headroom for newer workloads and supports Apple Intelligence, but there is no need to assume ordinary app launches will feel four years faster. Apple’s published specifications establish the hardware differences; they do not by themselves provide a real-world benchmark comparison.

Battery life and charging

Apple rates the 17 Pro Max for up to 39 hours of video playback and up to 35 hours of streamed video playback, versus up to 28 hours of video playback for the 13 Pro Max. These are Apple’s playback estimates under its test conditions, not a promise of 11 extra hours in typical mixed use. A new 17 Pro Max also should not be compared as if it had the same battery condition as a four- or five-year-old 13 Pro Max.

Apple says the 17 Pro Max can reach up to 50% charge in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable, or up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 30W-or-higher adapter using MagSafe. Actual charging depends on conditions and equipment. The 13 Pro Max uses Lightning, so a switch means changing cables or using adapters.

When a battery replacement makes more sense

If the 13 Pro Max is otherwise reliable and battery drain is your main complaint, check battery health and compare the local cost of an Apple-authorized replacement before buying a new phone. Apple’s battery service information is at iPhone battery replacement; pricing depends on region, coverage, and service conditions. Replacing the battery is less compelling if you also want Apple Intelligence, newer camera features, USB-C, or more performance for demanding work.

Software support and Apple Intelligence

Apple lists the 13 Pro Max as compatible with iOS 26, and its current compatibility information also lists the model for iOS 27. Compatibility with an iOS release does not mean every feature in that release works on every compatible device. Apple Intelligence is supported on the 17 Pro Max, but the 13 Pro Max is not on Apple’s Apple Intelligence compatibility list.

Apple Intelligence availability can depend on language, region, software version, and feature requirements. The distinction is hardware eligibility: the 13 Pro Max can remain compatible with iOS while missing features that require newer hardware. Do not treat an operating-system update as a guarantee that the phone receives every new capability.

USB-C, SIM, and moving from your old phone

USB-C on the 17 Pro Max can simplify cable sharing if you already use USB-C devices, and USB 3 support is useful for wired transfers of large files. Lightning accessories may need adapters or replacement. The 13 Pro Max’s Lightning-based accessories, charging cables, cases, and screen protectors are not a direct fit for the new phone.

In the United States, the 17 Pro Max is eSIM-only, while the 13 Pro Max supports a physical nano-SIM and eSIM. Before switching, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM activation and that your account is ready to transfer. Travelers who usually buy local physical SIM cards should check eSIM availability with their destination carrier and verify that the phone is unlocked. SIM configuration differs by region, so check the exact model where you plan to buy it.

Price, storage, and trade-in

Apple’s U.S. comparison page lists the 17 Pro Max from $1,199; price varies by storage and may change. Its capacities are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, while the 13 Pro Max was offered in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Compare equivalent storage when evaluating cost: the newer phone’s base capacity is double the 13 Pro Max’s original base capacity, and large video files can make capacity differences significant.

Apple’s U.S. buying page advertises $195–$695 in credit for an iPhone 13 or newer toward eligible purchases, subject to condition and other details. Apple’s 2025 launch announcement also described carrier promotions of up to $1,100 for qualifying iPhone 13-or-newer trade-ins toward iPhone 17 Pro purchases. These are different programs, and neither figure is a guaranteed discount for every 13 Pro Max. Compare the current estimate with carrier offers, reading plan, financing, trade-in, and monthly-credit conditions before committing.

For current U.S. purchase and trade-in information, see Apple’s iPhone buying page and 2025 iPhone 17 Pro launch announcement. The 13 Pro Max is a discontinued generation; its present used price depends on seller, storage, condition, and market, so a single fixed price would be misleading.

Who should upgrade—and who should keep the 13 Pro Max?

Upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro Max if

  • You want the more flexible camera system, especially for telephoto, macro, ultra-wide, or video work.
  • You regularly run demanding games or creative workloads and want newer hardware headroom.
  • You need longer battery life and the old phone’s battery is no longer adequate.
  • You want Apple Intelligence, USB-C, or the newer front-camera features.
  • You plan to keep your next phone for several years and the price fits your budget.

Keep the iPhone 13 Pro Max if

  • It still handles your apps, photos, and daily tasks reliably.
  • You mainly message, browse, stream, navigate, and take casual photos.
  • You value its physical-SIM flexibility or have many Lightning accessories.
  • You prefer a slightly smaller phone, or the 17 Pro Max’s cost outweighs its benefits for you.
  • Your battery is the only significant problem and replacement is a reasonable option.

Choose a smaller current iPhone if

You want newer performance and Apple Intelligence but do not need a 6.9-inch display or the Pro Max’s maximum battery and telephoto options. The iPhone 17 Pro may be a better size compromise; the standard iPhone 17 may suit buyers who do not need Pro camera features. Apple’s U.S. buying page lists the iPhone 17 from $799 and the 17 Pro/Pro Max family from $1,099, while the comparison page lists the 17 Pro Max from $1,199. Check the live page for the exact model and storage price.

Buying a used iPhone 13 Pro Max

A used 13 Pro Max can still be a sensible lower-cost choice if it is in good condition and its features meet your needs. Before paying, inspect the device and confirm:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Battery health and whether the battery has been replaced, and by whom.
  • Face ID, camera autofocus and stabilization, and True Tone display operation.
  • Activation Lock is removed, the phone is not carrier-locked unless that suits you, and its IMEI is not blacklisted.
  • Parts-and-service history and signs of liquid damage.
  • Storage capacity, regional model, and whether the seller accepts returns.

These checks are particularly important when comparing a low-cost used phone with the expense of a new flagship: a weak battery, repair issue, or carrier restriction can change the value calculation.
