If photos from an iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Pro show black blocks or other unexpected artifacts when an extremely bright LED display is shining directly into the camera, the problem may be a rare camera-processing bug rather than a defective lens. Apple said a software fix was planned, and reporting on iOS 26.0.1 says that update addressed unexpected artifacts under certain lighting conditions on iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models.
What the iPhone 17 camera glitch looks like
The reported failure appears in photos taken in unusually demanding lighting—specifically, when an extremely bright LED screen or display is directly in the camera’s view. Affected images can contain black boxes, blocked-out sections or other processing artifacts that were not present in the scene.
CNN Underscored reviewer Henry Casey encountered the problem while photographing concerts with an iPhone Air and an iPhone 17 Pro. MacRumors reported that he saw the issue in about “one out of every 10 images” during his review. That number describes his particular experience; it is not a measured failure rate for all iPhone 17 owners and is not an Apple statistic.
MacRumors also relayed Apple’s description of the trigger as “very rare cases when an LED light display is extremely bright and shining directly into the camera.” The report did not identify an individual Apple spokesperson, and Apple did not publish a technical explanation of the image-processing failure.

Which iPhones are covered by the reports?
The original incident report named the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro. MacRumors’ report on Apple’s iOS 26.0.1 release notes said the notes covered “Photos taken under certain lighting conditions with iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models may include unexpected artifacts.”
That wording does not prove that every iPhone 17 camera complaint has this cause, nor that every base iPhone 17 will produce the same artifact. A blurry, smudged or otherwise poor photo can result from a different problem.

Did iOS 26.0.1 fix it?
MacRumors reported on September 29, 2025 that Apple released iOS 26.0.1 with a camera fix matching this symptom. Install that update—or the newest iOS version your phone offers—before treating the problem as hardware failure.
The release-note language is limited to unexpected artifacts under certain lighting conditions. It should not be read as a promise to repair every camera defect, general image-quality complaint or unrelated failure.

What to do if your photos contain artifacts
- Update iOS. Open Settings > General > Software Update. Install iOS 26.0.1 if it is offered, or install the latest available release for your model. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi during the update.
- Retest the triggering scene. If safe and practical, take several photos in the same type of bright LED environment after updating. Avoid looking directly at intense lights for extended periods.
- Remove anything that could interfere with the camera. Apple advises removing the case, lens film, camera protector or other accessory that could obstruct a lens. Also check for accessories or magnets positioned near the camera, then test again.
- Clean the lenses for blur or haze. Wipe the front and rear lenses with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Cleaning is appropriate for fingerprints, smudges and general softness—not for the specific LED-triggered processing artifact.
- Restart the iPhone. A normal restart can clear a temporary camera or system process problem, although it is not a documented cure for the bright-LED bug.
- Test both cameras. Compare the rear and front cameras in ordinary daylight and indoor light. Note whether the fault occurs only with a particular camera, lens or lighting setup.
- Seek service if the fault remains. If the camera stays black, cannot focus, shows persistent artifacts in normal lighting or the flash fails after these checks, contact Apple or an authorized service provider.
Match the remedy to the symptom
| What you see | Most relevant next step | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Black blocks or unexpected shapes only when an intensely bright LED display shines into the lens | Install the latest iOS, including the reported iOS 26.0.1 fix, then retest | It does not show that the lens or sensor is physically damaged |
| Hazy, soft or smeared photos in ordinary lighting | Remove lens films and accessories; clean the lens; test again | Lens cleaning is not a fix for the LED-processing bug |
| Black preview, camera app failure or flash not working | Remove obstructions, restart, update iOS and test both cameras; arrange service if unresolved | These symptoms are not identified by the bright-LED report |
| Artifacts continue in normal scenes after updating | Document the examples and contact Apple support or service | The available reports do not establish a single cause for every persistent artifact |
Why the iPhone 17 camera specifications do not explain the fault
Apple announced the iPhone 17 with a 48MP Fusion Main camera, optical-quality 2x Telephoto capability and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Those specifications describe the camera system, but they do not identify why a very bright LED display can produce a corrupted-looking image. The published reports describe the triggering condition, not the underlying software or sensor mechanism.
What not to assume
- Do not treat Casey’s “one out of every 10 images” observation as a general defect rate.
- Do not assume every iPhone 17 owner, or every iPhone 17 model, is affected.
- Do not buy a case, lens accessory or replacement part expecting it to correct this software issue.
- Do not confuse Apple’s iOS 26 camera hint for detecting a smudged lens with a fix for LED-related artifacts. The hint is intended to recommend cleaning when the lens appears dirty.
- Do not classify ordinary blur, fingerprints or focus problems as the same bug without reproducing the bright-LED condition.
When service is the right answer
After updating, removing possible obstructions, cleaning the lenses where appropriate, restarting and testing both cameras, a phone that still fails in normal lighting should be evaluated by Apple. Service is especially appropriate for a camera that remains unusable, cannot focus, shows a black preview or has flash problems. The bright-LED report alone does not establish hardware damage, but persistent faults outside that lighting condition warrant a separate diagnosis.
