Choose the device that fits the school’s required apps and management policies first. A Chromebook is a laptop-style device with a built-in keyboard; an iPad is a tablet that can be paired with a keyboard case. Neither is a universal school winner, and their total costs are comparable only when you include the accessories, coverage, software, licensing, and support each configuration needs.

Which is better for school: an iPad or a Chromebook?

The better choice is the one the school supports for the student’s required apps, assessments, accounts, and device policies. Ask the school or teacher for its approved device requirements before buying. Then compare the actual models and configurations the school supports—not just the operating systems.

  • Check the required learning platform, testing software, accessibility tools, and file workflows.
  • Confirm whether students must use a school account and whether particular apps or browser features are required.
  • Ask what device models the school supports and what happens if a student brings a personally owned device.

Do the required school apps work on both?

Do not assume every iPad app has a Chromebook equivalent, or that every Chromebook workflow has an iPad equivalent. The available official materials do not establish a complete, current app-by-app compatibility list. Verify each essential app and service on the specific model and account setup the student will use.

Apple describes an institutional workflow in which Apple School Manager works with a mobile device management (MDM) solution to buy apps and books in volume, assign them to devices or users, and distribute them wirelessly. Apple says eligible education organizations can access special pricing when licensing 20 or more app copies; that condition is for app licensing, not a general device discount. See Apple’s education overview and Apple’s guidance on buying apps and books in Apple School Manager.

Google’s Chromebook education document describes access to Google productivity and collaboration tools, Chrome Web Store apps, Google Apps Marketplace content, and the web. It is an older document, so it should not be treated as a definitive current app catalog. Check the school’s current requirements and supported devices rather than relying on a general platform description: Google for Education’s Chromebook information.

Does an iPad need a keyboard for school?

Not always. An iPad can be used as a tablet, but students who regularly write essays or do other extended typing may need a compatible keyboard case. A Chromebook has a built-in, laptop-style keyboard; Google’s older education PDF describes it as a full-size Chrome keyboard. That describes the configuration, not a proven advantage in typing speed or comfort.

Apple’s U.S. institution price list dated September 9, 2026 includes iPad Wi-Fi bundles with rugged keyboard cases, including Logitech Rugged Combo 4. Treat a keyboard case as a configuration choice and cost, not as something included with every iPad. Before buying an iPad keyboard case, confirm it fits the exact iPad generation and model. For frequent long typing sessions, try the specific keyboard and software workflow if possible. For drawing, touch interaction, or handwriting, assess whether the tablet setup and required apps suit the student.

How does school device management affect the choice?

Management is an institutional workflow, not just a feature comparison between two devices. Apple says Apple School Manager used with device-management solutions lets school IT remotely configure deployed devices, manage settings, and distribute apps and books. Its support guidance also describes wireless installation and the ability to retain control of purchased app licenses, including revoking and reassigning them. The Google education PDF mentions cloud-based management in its historical package description, but it does not establish current Chromebook administration features or licensing. Ask the school administrator which system it uses and what it means for the student in practice:

  • Which settings can students change?
  • What apps, accounts, or restrictions can the school deploy?
  • How are lost devices, repairs, and student departures handled?
  • Are any management or licensing charges part of the school’s offer?
