These use-case recommendations follow from screen size and weight, not a hands-on performance or battery test.
What is the current iPad mini and iPad Air?
Apple’s official name for the compact model is iPad mini (A17 Pro); “iPad mini 7” is common shorthand. The current Air choices listed by Apple are iPad Air 11-inch (M4) and iPad Air 13-inch (M4). Check the model name carefully when comparing prices or shopping: specifications for an earlier iPad Air generation should not be treated as specifications for the M4 models.
How different are their screens?
iPad mini: compact, detailed display
Apple lists the mini display as 8.3 inches measured diagonally as a rectangle, with 2266 × 1488 resolution at 326 pixels per inch and 500 nits brightness. It supports P3 wide color and True Tone and has a fully laminated display with an anti-reflective coating. Its smaller canvas suits reading and portable use, but leaves less room for simultaneous content than either Air size.

iPad Air: choose between 11 and 13 inches
The current Air lineup offers two screen sizes, 11 inches and 13 inches. The larger Air is the clearest fit if you regularly want more on-screen room for a document beside another app, a drawing canvas, or video. Apple’s detailed specification page available for the previous 11-inch Air M3 lists a 10.86-inch measured display, 2360 × 1640 resolution at 264 ppi, and 500 nits; those are M3 figures, not confirmed specifications for the current M4 Air.
Is the iPad mini too small for note-taking?
Not necessarily. Its 8.3-inch display can work for quick handwritten notes, annotations, or jotting ideas when portability is more important than page size. The trade-off is less room to write or view a full page at once than on the larger Air screens. If your notes often sit beside reference material, or you use the tablet for extended drawing sessions, the Air’s larger canvas is the more practical size choice.

Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) on the mini. A Pencil is an additional purchase. Confirm compatibility for the specific iPad Air M4 model on Apple’s current technical specifications before buying a Pencil for it.
Which is better for carrying and extended reading?
The mini measures 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm. Apple lists its weight as 293 g for Wi-Fi and 297 g for cellular. Those dimensions and weight favor the mini when you want a tablet for a small bag or comfortable handheld reading. The Air’s larger screens give you more workspace, but the available evidence here does not establish current M4 Air weights for a precise weight comparison.

How should you compare storage, connectivity, and price?
Storage
The mini is available with 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of storage. Compare like-for-like storage when checking an Air, rather than assuming the entry configurations have the same capacity.
Wi-Fi or cellular
Decide whether you need mobile data away from Wi-Fi, then compare the same connectivity type across models. Apple’s stated mini weights differ by 4 g between Wi-Fi and cellular versions; check the current Air configuration and local price separately.

Price
There is no dependable current local price gap established for these models here, so a universal claim that one is better value would be misleading. Check Apple’s store or a reputable retailer in your region on the day you buy, matching screen size, storage, and Wi-Fi or cellular configuration. If the Air costs more in your market, consider whether its larger canvas will be useful often enough to justify that difference.

Choose accessories only after confirming the exact model and screen size. Apple’s mini specifications name Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible options. Check Apple’s M4 Air specifications for its Pencil and keyboard compatibility rather than carrying over details from the prior M3 generation. Cases are generation- and size-specific, so a case for one iPad mini or Air size may not fit another. Add the Pencil or keyboard cost to your budget if it is part of your intended setup.
