Yes—Apple’s 10.2-inch iPad (9th generation) can still be a good buy when it costs meaningfully less than newer iPads. Its A13 Bionic chip, 64GB starting storage, excellent 12MP Center Stage front camera, Apple Pencil (1st generation) support and dependable battery make it effective for browsing, streaming, schoolwork, video calls and handwritten notes. The trade-off is an older design with a Home button, large bezels, a Lightning port, a basic rear camera and first-generation accessories.
This is a value decision rather than a specification victory. Buy it for practical everyday tasks and a lower purchase price; choose a newer iPad if USB-C, a thinner-bezel design, a more premium display, newer Pencil compatibility or demanding creative work matters more than saving money.
What the iPad 9th generation is
Introduced in 2021, the iPad 9th generation is Apple’s entry-level tablet with a 10.2-inch Retina IPS display, A13 Bionic processor and either 64GB or 256GB of fixed storage. Apple sold it in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions. The tablet keeps the familiar physical Home button and Lightning connector used by earlier entry-level iPads, rather than adopting the newer edge-to-edge appearance and USB-C port found on more recent designs.

Apple’s US launch announcement listed a starting price of $329 in 2021. That is a historical launch price, not a statement of what a new, renewed or used unit costs today. Your real value depends on the seller, condition, battery health, warranty and whether the tablet is Wi-Fi or cellular.

The biggest advantages
A13 performance is still capable for everyday work
The A13 Bionic was a substantial step up from the A12-based entry-level iPad it replaced. In normal use it handles web browsing, email, documents, school portals, streaming video, video calls, reading and many App Store applications without feeling like a specialist low-power device. Apps open quickly enough for ordinary workflows, and the processor gives the tablet useful headroom for multitasking with a browser, notes and a document.
That does not make it the right tool for every workload. Sustained, demanding creative projects, complex layered artwork, heavy video editing and other processor-intensive tasks are better reasons to consider a newer iPad. The ninth-generation model is strongest when the workload is mixed and practical rather than professional.
The front camera is unusually useful for calls
The 12MP Ultra Wide front camera is the model’s most visible camera upgrade. Center Stage uses the wide field of view to keep people framed during supported video calls, automatically adjusting the crop as participants move. For remote classes, family calls and work meetings, this is more useful than a high-megapixel rear camera that you rarely use.
Center Stage depends on an app supporting the feature, so it is not a guarantee that every calling or recording application will use automatic framing. When supported, the camera’s positioning and tracking make calls more forgiving if you shift in your chair or have more than one person in view.

64GB makes the base model more practical
Apple doubled the previous entry model’s announced storage and offers 64GB as the starting capacity, with a 256GB option above it. That makes the base configuration considerably easier to recommend for browsing, streaming services, documents and moderate app use than a very small-storage tablet.
Because there is no microSD expansion, capacity is a purchase-time decision. Applications, downloaded shows, photos, games and offline school files all consume the same internal space. Choose 256GB if the iPad will hold a substantial media library, large creative files or several years of photos; 64GB is more sensible when most content streams from the internet and files are kept in cloud storage.
It supports handwriting and basic typing
The iPad works with Apple Pencil (1st generation), enabling handwritten notes, marking PDFs, diagrams and simple sketches. It also supports Apple’s Smart Keyboard for basic typing without pairing a separate Bluetooth keyboard. Together, those accessories cover common student workflows: read a worksheet, write directly on it, then type a longer assignment when needed.

The first-generation device has an older charging and attachment workflow, so confirm the exact Pencil model and connector arrangement before buying a used tablet or accessory bundle.

True Tone improves comfort in changing light
The Retina IPS display includes True Tone, which adjusts color temperature to match ambient lighting. The feature is subtle rather than dramatic, but it can make reading and document work look more natural as you move between a desk, a classroom and a room with warm evening lights.
Battery life is practical, with test-method limits
Apple rates the iPad for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback. In Macworld’s controlled battery drain test at 200 nits using Geekbench 4, it lasted about eight hours. Macworld characterized ordinary use as roughly a full day. These figures are not interchangeable promises: screen brightness, cellular radios, games, video calls, background activity and battery age all change runtime.
The compromises to understand before buying
Older chassis, bezels and connector
The 10.2-inch body retains a physical Home button and broad bezels around the screen. Those bezels provide a place to hold the tablet without touching the display, but they look dated beside newer thin-bezel iPads and make the device feel less compact for its screen size.
The Lightning port is another practical limitation. If your phone, laptop and accessories now use USB-C, you will need a separate cable or adapter for the iPad. A Lightning-based charging and accessory setup is perfectly usable, but it is less convenient when standardizing on one modern connector.

The rear camera is for utility, not photography
The rear camera is an 8MP wide unit. It is adequate for scanning a receipt, photographing a whiteboard, capturing a document or taking an occasional casual picture in good light. It should not be the reason to choose this tablet for photography or advanced video work. The front camera is the more important imaging feature because Center Stage directly improves calls.
The display is serviceable rather than premium
The 2160×1620 IPS panel is sharp enough for reading, websites and video at this size, and True Tone is useful. However, independent assessments describe it as the familiar LCD-style entry-level panel rather than a premium newer display. Buyers who care about a more modern panel construction, thinner chassis characteristics or a higher-end viewing experience should compare current models in person or against their published specifications.
First-generation accessories have limitations
Apple Pencil (1st generation) remains functional for handwriting, but its charging and attachment method is older and less convenient than newer Pencil systems. The Smart Keyboard is designed for basic typing, not the feel or flexibility of a full laptop keyboard. Budget for a compatible case, keyboard or stylus only after checking the exact 10.2-inch and ninth-generation fit; similarly sized iPads are not automatically interchangeable.

Students
For students, the iPad covers the core loop of reading, annotating, searching, attending video classes and writing short assignments. Apple Pencil support is valuable for handwritten lecture notes and PDF markup, while the front camera suits remote classes. The main decisions are storage and accessories: 64GB is adequate for cloud-first work, while 256GB is safer for large offline libraries. A keyboard is helpful for essays, but the tablet remains a tablet rather than a complete laptop replacement for every course.

Streaming and reading
The Retina display, True Tone and all-day-class battery behavior make it a comfortable streaming and reading device. The 10.2-inch size gives video more space than a phone without the bulk of a large professional tablet. If you download many shows or games, select 256GB because there is no memory-card slot.
Video calls
The 12MP Ultra Wide camera and Center Stage are the strongest reason to prefer this generation over older entry-level iPads for calls. Keep expectations realistic: framing works in supported apps, and call quality still depends on lighting, network conditions and the software you use.
Light office tasks
Email, browser-based work, forms, note-taking and document editing are within the A13’s comfort zone. The Smart Keyboard makes short typing sessions practical. People who need extended typing, desktop-class software, multiple external displays or intensive multitasking should treat the iPad as a companion device and compare newer hardware before replacing a laptop.

Do not choose capacity solely from the number of apps you install on day one. Leave room for operating-system updates, cached files and the content you will actually keep on the tablet. If the price gap between capacities is small in the market you are considering, the larger option provides more flexibility; if the gap is substantial and you stream most content, 64GB can be the better value.
What to check when buying new, renewed or used
- Confirm the generation and size. Verify that the listing says iPad 10.2-inch (9th generation), not simply “10.2-inch iPad.” Earlier 10.2-inch models can look similar but use different processors and cameras.
- Check storage and connectivity. Record whether it is 64GB or 256GB and whether it is Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular. Cellular models may require carrier compatibility and a separate service plan.
- Inspect condition and battery information. For a renewed or used unit, ask how battery health is assessed, whether the screen has bright spots or dead pixels, and whether all buttons and cameras work.
- Verify the included accessories. A listing may omit the charger, cable, Pencil or keyboard. Confirm that any Pencil is first generation and that a case is made for this exact body.
- Review warranty and returns. Seller warranty terms, return windows and refurbishment standards vary. A lower price is less attractive if a defective battery or damaged port leaves you without support.
- Compare the total cost with newer iPads. Include the storage level, accessories, taxes, shipping and any cellular service rather than comparing headline tablet prices alone.
When a newer iPad is the better choice
Compare newer iPads if any of the following is a priority:
- USB-C charging and easier compatibility with current cables and hubs.
- A thinner-bezel design without the traditional Home button.
- A more premium or modern display construction and chassis.
- Newer Apple Pencil compatibility or a more convenient stylus workflow.
- Stronger rear-camera capability for regular photography or video.
- Sustained demanding creative workloads that benefit from newer processors.
Those are feature and design reasons, not a claim that every newer model is faster in every task. Compare the exact model’s processor, screen, storage, cameras, accessories, cellular options, weight and battery test results before deciding.
A simple buy-or-skip decision
Buy the ninth generation when
- The price is clearly below comparable newer iPads.
- You mainly browse, stream, read, attend calls, take notes and perform light office work.
- You are comfortable with Lightning, a Home button and first-generation Pencil support.
- 64GB or 256GB matches your offline-storage needs.
- You can verify the unit’s condition, battery and warranty.
Skip it when
- You want USB-C as a requirement rather than a preference.
- You expect a premium display or the newest thin-bezel design.
- You need advanced rear-camera work, intensive editing or long sustained heavy workloads.
- You specifically want a newer Pencil generation.
- The discounted price is close to a newer model with better connectivity and accessories.
Verdict: is the iPad 9th generation still worth buying?
The 2021 iPad 9th generation remains worth considering as a low-cost, familiar iPad. A13 performance, a useful 12MP Center Stage camera, 64GB starting storage, Pencil and Smart Keyboard support, True Tone and practical battery life cover the needs of many students, families and streaming-focused buyers. Its value depends on getting a meaningful discount or a well-supported renewed unit. Pay extra for a newer iPad when USB-C, a modern chassis, premium display characteristics, newer accessories or demanding creative performance will materially improve how you use the tablet.
