There is no single recalibration interval for every IoT sensor. Set one for the specific model and measurement by considering manufacturer guidance, observed drift, operating conditions, required accuracy, and any safety or quality rules that apply. Calibration compares a sensor’s measurement with a suitable reference; adjustment changes its reading. A traceability claim documents a measurement chain, but does not by itself prove the sensor is accurate enough for your use.

What IoT sensor calibration means

Calibration is the comparison of a sensor’s measurement output with a known reference. It establishes how the device reads under the calibration conditions; it does not necessarily change the device.

Adjustment is a separate operation: it corrects the sensor’s indication or output. A vendor’s workflow may include both comparison and adjustment, but the terms are not interchangeable. Before adjusting a sensor that appears to read incorrectly, check for environmental interference and allow it to stabilize. Vaisala flags heat sources, temperature differences, condensation, and moisture as factors that can affect readings in its guidance for its products: Vaisala calibration services.

How often should IoT sensors be recalibrated?

Use the interval specified for the exact sensor model and application; no universal IoT recalibration schedule is established. A useful interval balances the consequences of an incorrect reading against the sensor’s drift history, the conditions in which it operates, and the effort or downtime involved in checking it.

AstroAI Digital Multimeter Tester 2000 Counts with DC AC Voltmeter and Ohm Volt Amp Meter; Measures Voltage, Current, Resistance, Continuity and Diode, Blue
  • Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
  • Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
  • Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
  • Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
  • Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
  • Start with the manufacturer’s manual. Follow its calibration interval and any stated conditions, and check whether it calls for adjustment, service, replacement of a sensing element, or replacement of the sensor.
  • Consider the measurement’s role. A reading used for a safety response, compliance record, or consequential control decision may require stricter checks than one used only for a rough trend. Apply any relevant governing requirements.
  • Account for operating conditions and observed drift. Harsh or changing environments and a history of readings moving outside tolerance can justify more frequent checks, if the model’s instructions allow it.
  • Keep the scope of published intervals intact. Vaisala describes yearly calibration as typical for particular HMP probe families, while allowing more frequent checks when an application calls for them. That is not a schedule for other Vaisala models or IoT sensors generally: Vaisala HMP probe guide.

Some applications have requirements that must not be generalized. OSHA’s guidance on direct-reading portable gas monitors used in occupational settings calls for calibration checks or full calibration daily, or more often as needed in the context it addresses. It is not a daily schedule for general-purpose connected sensors: OSHA guidance for portable gas monitors.

What “NIST-traceable” means—and what it does not

NIST adopts the VIM definition of metrological traceability as the “property of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty.” Traceability belongs to a measurement result and its documented chain, not automatically to every instrument that has been calibrated. See NIST’s policy on metrological traceability.

A traceability claim alone does not guarantee that a measurement is fit for purpose. The reference, calibration results, documented chain, and associated uncertainties must support the claim; then you still need to decide whether the uncertainty is small enough for the decision you will make. NIST explains this distinction in its technical note on metrological traceability. A certificate or product description should therefore be evaluated against the measurement range and accuracy your application requires, not treated as a blanket guarantee.

Can you calibrate an IoT sensor in the field?

Often, a field comparison is practical, but suitability depends on the measurand, range, required accuracy, reference equipment, and the sensor’s own adjustment procedure. Use a reference with appropriate documentation and uncertainty for the decision at hand. A consumer-grade instrument does not become traceable merely because it is used beside an IoT sensor.

Verkada’s instructions offer one product-specific example for supported air-quality sensors: place a reference device near the sensor, enter the reference reading, refresh the current reading, review the profile, then apply the offset. The supported readings listed include temperature, humidity, CO₂, CO, noise, and specified particulate sizes. The offset affects readings going forward rather than rewriting past data, and the event is recorded in an audit log. This workflow applies to the supported Verkada devices, not to all sensors: Verkada air-quality sensor calibration instructions.

For its temperature and humidity sensor calibration, Verkada recommends NIST-traceable references and names a Traceable Barometric/Temperature/Humidity Wi-Fi Data Logger and a Fluke 52-2 digital thermometer as examples. For particulate calibration, it recommends a TSI DustTrak DRX 8533. These are examples for its documented workflow, not universal requirements or proof that any purchase alone establishes a traceable chain.

More demanding work may require controlled laboratory conditions rather than an informal field comparison. Fluke’s humidity calibration guidance describes using a humidity calibrator chamber, allowing conditions to stabilize, and following staged measurement procedures: Fluke humidity calibration guidance.

What to record when checking or adjusting a sensor

Good records let you interpret the reading later, understand any adjustment, and support a traceability claim where applicable. Retain the reference identification and calibration status, conditions, reference and sensor readings, uncertainty information when available, adjustment made, date, and responsible person. This supports a documented chain; it does not by itself establish that the result meets your application’s accuracy needs. Verkada’s audit-log example shows one way a device workflow may retain calibration events, while NIST’s policy explains the importance of documenting the chain and uncertainty.

When to adjust, service, or replace a sensor

Do not assume every IoT sensor can be corrected through software. The available remedy depends on the model: some devices support adjustment, some require manufacturer service, and some use replaceable sensing elements or require full sensor replacement.

For example, Vaisala says an INTERCAP humidity sensing element in the applicable probe families may be replaced if accuracy is out of specification; other probe designs use adjustment and may require sensor replacement. Check the exact product guide before acting. Manufacturers may also recommend factory recalibration because instrument characteristics can change over time or with environmental conditions; LI-COR describes recalibration services across multiple instrument systems: LI-COR support.
