iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later—but installing the update does not mean every phone gets every feature. The clearest reported divide is Apple Intelligence and the new Siri capabilities, which depend on newer hardware. Apple describes system performance improvements, but there is no verified cross-model benchmark showing how much faster a newer iPhone runs iOS 27 than an older supported one.
Which iPhones can run iOS 27?
Apple’s iPhone models compatible with iOS 27 guide lists the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max; iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 families; iPhone Air; iPhone 18 Pro models; and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). That list establishes operating-system eligibility, not access to every iOS 27 feature.

Apple cautions that features and apps may vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. Feature availability can also depend on rollout status, so check the specific feature and device rather than relying on the iOS version alone.
What do older iPhones miss?
The most consequential reported hardware split concerns Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI features. In a September 9, 2026 report, MacRumors described three practical tiers. This is dated secondary reporting, not an Apple-published permanent compatibility matrix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| iPhone group | iOS 27 eligibility | Reported Apple Intelligence and Siri tier | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 through iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus | Yes | MacRumors reports no Apple Intelligence or new Siri | These phones can run iOS 27 but miss the prominent reported AI features. |
| iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max; iPhone 16 family | Yes | MacRumors reports standard Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features | These models get the main reported AI tier, but not every top-tier Siri feature. |
| iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air | Yes | MacRumors reports support for all new Siri AI features covered in its article | These are the strongest examples in that report for access to its full described Siri feature set. |
| iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) | Yes | Not established by the shared SE name; check the exact generation and current device-specific availability | Do not assume different SE generations share the same AI eligibility. |
Apple’s iOS 27 overview describes features including synced captions and caption translation, iCloud Shared Albums improvements, Cycle Tracking resources, enhanced Maps Flyover, AirPods Custom EQ, smarter Home features using Apple Intelligence, and GymKit on iPhone. The overview does not establish that every listed feature works on every supported model. In particular, an Apple Intelligence label signals a hardware-dependent feature, not a promise of availability on all compatible iPhones.
Will iOS 27 make an older iPhone slower?
Apple says iOS 27 includes an optimized CPU scheduler and other system improvements. An Associated Press explainer published September 23, 2026 also reported refinements intended to improve speed, including quicker app loading. Neither source provides a directly comparable benchmark establishing how much faster or slower a particular older supported iPhone runs than a newer one.

So the evidence does not support a blanket claim that iOS 27 speeds up every older phone—or that installing it necessarily slows one down. Perceived performance is specific to the device and workload. Battery health, available storage, thermal conditions, and the apps you use are sensible individual checks, but no model-specific iOS 27 measurements for those factors are established here.

How to decide whether your iPhone is enough
- If you mainly want the iOS 27 update: confirm your exact model against Apple’s compatibility list; iPhone 11 and later are included.
- If Apple Intelligence or the new Siri features matter most: compare your exact model with current device-specific availability. The three tiers above reflect MacRumors’s September 2026 account, not an official Apple matrix.
- If your concern is speed: judge the phone you have rather than assuming a result based on age alone. Check its battery condition, free storage, temperature, and performance in the apps you actually use.
- If a feature is missing: check its device, region, language, carrier, and rollout requirements. OS compatibility by itself does not resolve those conditions.
