The claim that iOS 26 said to bring Markdown support to Apple Notes is now outdated: Apple has shipped Markdown file import and export in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. Notes converts imported Markdown into rich text, but it still does not provide a raw Markdown editor or guarantee lossless conversion.

That distinction matters. Apple Notes can now act as a bridge between rich-text note-taking and Markdown-compatible apps, but users cannot normally type #, **bold**, or fenced code syntax and see those characters as their editable source. Notes displays the formatted result instead.

Apple’s official feature description calls the capability Markdown Export and Import. Apple’s support documentation says Markdown syntax is converted into rich text during import, while notes can be exported as Markdown files. The feature is documented for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.

Key takeaways

  • iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 support importing Markdown files into Notes and exporting notes as Markdown files.
  • Imported Markdown becomes Apple Notes rich text; Notes does not offer a conventional raw-Markdown writing mode.
  • Headings, bold, italics, links, and basic lists are the safest formatting to expect during conversion.
  • Tables, code blocks, footnotes, task-list syntax, embedded HTML, images, and app-specific extensions are not documented as fully compatible.
  • Apple Notes is now useful for occasional Markdown exchange, but it is not a replacement for a Markdown-first vault, Git workflow, or automated publishing system.

What does iOS 26 Markdown support in Apple Notes actually mean?

iOS 26 Markdown support in Apple Notes means file import and export, not native Markdown-source editing. A .md file can be brought into Notes, where Markdown syntax is converted into formatted rich text. A text-based note can then be exported as a Markdown file for use in another application.

Apple’s iOS 26 feature list identifies the feature as “Markdown Export and Import.” Apple’s wording supports a two-way interchange workflow:

Workflow What happens What it does not mean
Import .md into Notes Markdown syntax is interpreted and displayed as rich text. The original Markdown source remains visible and editable in Notes.
Edit the imported note You use Apple Notes’ rich-text controls and normal editing interface. You are not editing a plain-text Markdown file in place.
Export a note as Markdown Notes creates a .md file that can be saved or shared. Every Notes feature or Markdown extension will necessarily survive.

The most accurate description is therefore: Apple Notes converts between Markdown syntax and its own rich-text representation. Calling the feature “full Markdown support” would imply a complete parser, a source editor, and predictable round-trip compatibility that Apple has not promised.

Can you edit raw Markdown directly in Apple Notes?

No. Apple Notes does not expose a conventional source mode in which Markdown characters remain visible while you write. Imported headings, emphasis, links, and lists appear as formatted content rather than as characters such as #, **, or backticks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the key difference between Apple Notes and a Markdown-first app. In Notes, Markdown is primarily an interchange format. In a Markdown-first editor, the underlying document is normally a plain-text Markdown file that you can inspect, edit, version, script, and move between compatible tools.

Independent coverage of the Notes workflow also describes the limitation: users do not write with visible Markdown syntax inside the Notes editor. You can edit content that originated as Markdown, but you edit the rich-text interpretation rather than the original source.

How do you import a Markdown file on iPhone or iPad?

On iPhone or iPad, import a Markdown file through the Files app’s Share sheet. The procedure requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later and a file with the .md extension.

  1. Save the Markdown file in the Files app.
  2. Touch and hold the .md file.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Choose Notes from the Share sheet. You may need to swipe through the app icons or use the More option.
  5. Choose whether to save the imported content as a new note or add it to an existing note.
  6. Confirm the import if Notes displays a confirmation prompt.

After import, check the note rather than assuming that every construct converted correctly. Test a heading, link, list, bold phrase, italic phrase, code example, image, and any other structure that matters to your workflow.

When iCloud Notes is enabled, Apple places imported notes in an Imported Notes folder in the iCloud section. If the note is stored locally, the imported content appears under the corresponding local Notes location. Apple documents the mobile import process and folder behavior in its Notes import and sharing instructions.

How do you import Markdown on a Mac?

On a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Notes has a dedicated File > Import Markdown command. The Mac workflow is more direct than the iPhone and iPad Share sheet.

  1. Open Notes.
  2. Select the destination folder if you want to control where the imported notes are placed.
  3. Choose File > Import Markdown from the menu bar.
  4. Select one or more .md files.
  5. Click Import.
  6. Confirm the import by clicking Import again when prompted.

With iCloud Notes, imported notes go into an Imported Notes folder in iCloud. Without iCloud Notes, the folder appears under On My Mac. The exact destination depends on the Notes account and folder selected during the workflow.

How do you export an Apple Note as a Markdown file?

On iPhone, open a text-based note, tap Share, and choose the Markdown export option. The resulting file can be saved to Files or sent to another application that accepts Markdown.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. Open the note in Apple Notes.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Select the Markdown export command.
  4. Use the Share sheet to save the file in Files or send it to a Markdown-compatible app.
  5. Open the exported .md file in a plain-text editor and inspect the result before deleting or replacing the original note.

Apple documentation currently contains a labeling inconsistency. The iPhone user guide displays an export label variant, including Export as Markup in at least one localized guide, while Apple’s iOS 26 feature list and independent coverage describe Markdown export. The safest instruction is to look for the Markdown export option rather than rely on one exact label. Check the current iPhone Notes export guide for the wording shown by your build and region.

Export behavior can depend on the content of the note. A text-focused note is a better test case than a note containing scans, drawings, audio, or several Apple-specific objects.

What Apple Notes formatting is most likely to survive?

Apple says imported Markdown is converted to rich text while maintaining formatting. The safest expectations are basic document structures that have a close equivalent in Apple Notes and ordinary Markdown.

Markdown content Reasonable expectation Recommended approach
Headings Likely to appear as formatted headings. Verify heading levels after import and export.
Bold and italic text Basic emphasis is supported by the documented workflow. Use ordinary Markdown emphasis rather than app-specific syntax.
Bulleted lists Basic list structure is likely to convert. Inspect nested lists and unusual indentation.
Links Standard links are among the documented examples of preserved formatting. Check both the visible text and destination URL.
Tables Full compatibility is not established by Apple’s documentation. Test separately or convert important tables to simpler text.
Code blocks and syntax highlighting Full support is not established. Keep the original source file and verify code-heavy notes manually.
Footnotes, task lists, HTML, and extensions Full compatibility is not established. Assume these require testing unless Apple documents otherwise.

Apple has not published a complete compatibility matrix covering tables, fenced code blocks, syntax highlighting, footnotes, definition lists, task-list syntax, embedded HTML, Mermaid diagrams, YAML front matter, relative image paths, or custom attributes. Do not promise lossless conversion for those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to attachments and Apple Notes features?

Content that exists in Apple Notes but has no straightforward Markdown equivalent may be omitted, flattened, or lose its special behavior during conversion. Apple warns that unsupported attachments or features are not imported when converting note formats.

That warning matters because an Apple Note can contain much more than text. Examples include:

  • Scanned documents and PDFs
  • Images and other attachments
  • Drawings and handwriting
  • Tables
  • Checklists
  • Tags and mentions
  • Links to other notes
  • Audio recordings

Apple’s iPhone export documentation also warns that some Notes-specific elements may not remain active when moved into another format. A checklist may become ordinary text, a link to another note may lose its special Notes behavior, and tags or mentions may no longer function as Apple Notes metadata. See Apple’s notes export guidance before converting a library that depends on those features.

Use a backup before bulk conversion

Keep the original Markdown files before importing them, and duplicate important Apple Notes before exporting or reorganizing them. A safe migration test uses a representative sample rather than the entire library at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose five to ten notes containing the structures you use most.
  2. Import the sample into Notes.
  3. Compare the displayed result with the original files.
  4. Export the sample back to Markdown.
  5. Open the exported files in a plain-text editor and compare the structure.
  6. Only then decide whether a larger migration is worth the conversion risk.

Does Markdown support work across Apple platforms?

Apple documents Markdown import and export in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 and later. The capability is cross-platform within those operating-system generations, although the interface differs.

Platform Minimum documented version Import method Export method
iPhone iOS 26 Files app > touch and hold the .md file > Share > Notes Open note > Share > Markdown export option
iPad iPadOS 26 Files app Share sheet > Notes Use the note’s Share controls
Mac macOS Tahoe 26 Notes > File > Import Markdown Use the note’s share or export controls

Apple advises updating the device before importing or sharing notes. Feature availability can vary by region, language, or device, so readers should consult Apple’s iOS and iPadOS feature-availability page if an expected control is missing. The dossier does not establish a verified list of compatible iPhone models, so compatibility should not be inferred from an older iOS support list.

Does iCloud matter for Markdown import?

iCloud is not required for every local Notes workflow, but iCloud determines where imported notes appear and whether those notes synchronize across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

With iCloud Notes enabled, imported notes are placed in the iCloud section’s Imported Notes folder and can be available on the user’s other compatible Apple devices. Without iCloud, the notes remain in a local Notes account such as On My iPhone or On My Mac. Apple explains the account and destination behavior in its official Notes import documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iCloud synchronization should not be confused with Markdown-file storage. A note synchronized through iCloud is still an Apple Notes record; it is not automatically exposed as an ordinary folder of Markdown files that can be managed with Git or another file-sync system.

Why might Markdown import or export fail?

If the Markdown command does not appear or the result looks wrong, start with the file, operating-system version, and complexity of the test document.

If the import option is missing

  • Confirm that the file ends in .md.
  • Confirm that the device runs iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS Tahoe 26, as appropriate.
  • On iPhone or iPad, open the Share sheet from the Files app rather than an unsupported third-party viewer.
  • Save the file locally in Files and try again.
  • Check that the file is genuinely plain text and not a renamed HTML, rich-text, or proprietary document.
  • Install available system updates if Notes does not show the documented command.

If formatting is missing

  • Test a simple file containing only headings, paragraphs, lists, links, bold, and italics.
  • Remove app-specific Markdown extensions.
  • Replace complex tables or embedded HTML with simpler Markdown.
  • Check image paths and attachments separately.
  • Test code blocks, footnotes, task lists, and tables independently.
  • Keep the original .md file as the source of truth until the conversion has been checked.

A successful import of a simple note does not prove that a large technical vault or publishing repository will convert correctly. Complexity and nonstandard syntax are the most important reasons to perform a sample migration first.

Is Apple Notes now a practical Markdown app?

Apple Notes is practical for users who need occasional Markdown interoperability, but it is not a Markdown-first application. The feature’s strongest benefit is moving text-centric notes into or out of Apple Notes without manually recreating basic headings, lists, emphasis, and links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Need Apple Notes fit Why
Quick capture on iPhone or iPad Strong Notes is integrated into Apple’s operating systems and supports rich media, scans, handwriting, and attachments.
Occasional Markdown import or export Good iOS 26 and related platforms provide two-way file conversion for text-centric notes.
Visible Markdown while writing Poor Notes displays formatted rich text rather than raw Markdown syntax.
Git-based version control Poor Notes does not present the library as a normal folder of source .md files.
Advanced Markdown extensions Uncertain Apple has not documented a complete compatibility specification.
Scans, handwriting, and Apple-native attachments Strong These are central Notes features, although they do not necessarily export cleanly to Markdown.
Automated publishing pipelines Poor Markdown export is useful for transfer but does not establish scripting, API, or deterministic publishing support.
Cross-platform Markdown vault Poor Apple Notes is primarily an Apple-platform service rather than an open Markdown-file workspace.

Apple Notes is a sensible choice when Apple integration and low-friction capture matter more than source-file control. Users should not switch to Notes based on Markdown import/export alone if their workflow depends on backlinks, a local vault, plugins, code syntax highlighting, automated publishing, or lossless round-tripping.

How does Apple Notes compare with Markdown-focused alternatives?

Apple Notes competes with Markdown-oriented tools in different ways: Obsidian emphasizes local Markdown files and knowledge management, Bear emphasizes polished Apple-focused writing, Craft emphasizes structured and collaborative documents, and Ulysses emphasizes long-form writing and publishing.

App Best fit Storage and editing emphasis Poor fit when
Apple Notes Apple-native capture, scans, handwriting, attachments, and occasional Markdown exchange Apple Notes records, iCloud or local Notes locations, rich-text editing You need raw Markdown files, Git, advanced plugins, or broad non-Apple access
Obsidian Markdown-first knowledge bases, backlinks, graph navigation, plugins, and local control Local Markdown vaults with source files as the foundation You mainly want effortless rich-media capture, handwriting, or a simple consumer interface
Bear Polished Apple-focused writing with Markdown-oriented export and tagging Writing-focused app with organization and Markdown-aware workflows You require Windows, Android, Linux, or a completely open Markdown folder
Craft Visually polished documents, collaboration, structured workspaces, and publishing-oriented content Document-centric workspace optimized for presentation and teamwork Plain local Markdown storage and Git-style control are the priority
Ulysses Long-form writing, organization, drafting, and Apple-platform publishing Writing workspace designed around substantial documents and publishing You need a general-purpose, cross-platform Markdown knowledge base

Readers considering an alternative can review the official product pages for Obsidian, Bear, Craft, Ulysses, and Apple Notes. Current prices, plan limits, regional taxes, trials, and subscription terms should be checked on the vendor pages before purchase; current figures were not verified for this article.

Which app should you choose?

Choose Apple Notes if you want Apple-native capture, iCloud synchronization, scans, handwriting, and attachments, and you only occasionally need to import or export ordinary Markdown files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Obsidian if Markdown must remain the underlying source format and you need local files, backlinks, plugins, or a knowledge-base workflow. Choose Bear if you want a polished Apple-only writing experience with Markdown-oriented organization. Choose Craft for collaborative, presentation-heavy documents, and choose Ulysses for long-form writing and Apple-platform publishing.

Apple Notes does not need to be replaced merely because it lacks a raw Markdown editor. The new import/export feature solves an interoperability problem; it does not attempt to turn Notes into a file-based Markdown system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does iOS 26 support Markdown editing in Apple Notes?

iOS 26 supports importing and exporting Markdown files, but Apple Notes does not provide a conventional raw-Markdown editing mode. Imported Markdown is displayed and edited as rich text.

Can Apple Notes export a note as a .md file?

Yes. Open a text-based note, tap Share, choose the Markdown export option, and save or send the resulting .md file. The exact export label can vary by build or localization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Apple Notes preserve every Markdown feature?

No. Apple documents conversion of Markdown into rich text and basic formatting such as headings, emphasis, links, and lists, but it does not promise lossless support for every extension, table, code block, footnote, attachment, or embedded object.

Do you need iCloud to import Markdown into Apple Notes?

No. Markdown can be imported into a local Notes location, but iCloud affects where imported notes appear and whether they synchronize across compatible Apple devices.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Apple Notes now supports Markdown file import and export on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. The feature is valuable as a transfer bridge, especially for Apple users who need basic formatting interoperability. It does not make Notes a raw Markdown editor or a Markdown-first knowledge-management system. Keep a source-file backup, test representative notes, and choose a Markdown-native app when local files, Git, advanced syntax, backlinks, or automated publishing are essential.
