For a personal phone used only to access work in supported apps, Microsoft Intune MAM is often the better starting point: it can protect organizational data inside those apps without enrolling the whole device. Choose MDM when IT needs to configure or assess the device itself. Organizations can also combine MDM and MAM, and personal Android devices have an additional option: an Android Enterprise work profile.
What is the difference between Intune MDM and MAM?
MDM manages the device
Mobile device management (MDM) enrolls a device in Intune so administrators can apply device-level settings, deploy and manage apps, and manage device compliance and state. It is common for organization-owned hardware, but personal devices can also be enrolled. See Microsoft’s Intune core concepts and device enrollment guide.
MAM manages organizational data in supported apps
Mobile application management (MAM) applies app protection policies to organizational data inside supported apps. It does not require enrollment in an MDM solution. Depending on the policy, IT can require an app PIN or biometric, restrict data transfer between apps, prevent saving company data to personal storage, encrypt app data, and selectively remove organizational data. Microsoft describes these capabilities in its App Protection Policies overview.
MAM works only with apps integrated with the Intune SDK or wrapped using Microsoft’s app-wrapping tool. Setup also depends on an assigned Intune license, a Microsoft Entra account, policy targeting, and a supported app. Android requires the Company Portal for app protection; some iOS flows require a broker app such as Microsoft Authenticator. Which option fits your organization’s needs?

Microsoft says its two management modes can be used independently or together. MAM can protect an unenrolled personal device, while MAM policies can also protect sensitive apps on an enrolled device. Policy targeting can distinguish enrolled from unenrolled states; see the MAM FAQ.
What is the Android work-profile option?
On a personal Android device, an Android Enterprise personally-owned work profile creates an operating-system-level space for work. It supports selected MDM tasks, including deploying apps through Managed Google Play and configuring certificates, Wi-Fi, VPN, and passcodes. MAM instead applies protection at the app layer; the approaches may be used separately or together. For example, app protection policies can add controls such as blocking saves to untrusted cloud storage. A work profile may not suit environments where Google services are unavailable or where the organization does not want device management. What can my organization see if I enroll my personal device?
Enrollment does not mean that IT can see everything on a personal device. Microsoft’s user-facing enrollment visibility guidance says an organization cannot see personal calling or browsing history, email or text messages, contacts, calendars, passwords, photos, or the contents of user-created documents. It says administrators can see technical and identity details such as the device owner, name, serial number, model, manufacturer, operating-system version, and IMEI. The organization can see managed app inventory, and some configurations may expose more information; Microsoft’s guidance recommends asking the organization’s IT administrator about its setup. Under this guidance, an organization cannot view the location of a personal device.
MAM keeps management focused on organizational data in supported apps. MDM enrollment gives IT device-level controls and may allow full-device actions. Microsoft distinguishes selective removal of organizational app data under MAM from a full-device wipe under MDM. Before enrolling personal hardware, ask IT what wipe process is configured and what device controls the organization will apply. How to choose before enrolling
- List the work apps and data flows. Identify the apps employees need and where they need to open, share, or save organizational information.
- Check app protection support. Confirm that each required app supports Intune app protection and verify platform-specific prerequisites in Microsoft’s app protection overview and MAM FAQ.
- Decide whether IT must manage the device. If the requirement includes device configuration, compliance, or device-level deployment, assess MDM. If app-level data protection is enough, assess MAM.
- Agree on privacy and wipe expectations. Explain what enrollment makes visible, what controls are planned, and how organizational data or a device could be wiped.
- Verify platform and licensing requirements. Confirm current Intune licensing, account, app, and platform prerequisites with the administrator before selecting a rollout approach.
