Use the Windows TextInput Policy CSP setting ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/TextInput/AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions in an Intune Windows custom profile. Enter the integer 0 to block suggestions generated while typing with a physical keyboard, or 1 to allow them. Microsoft lists 1 as the default.
This is a device-scoped policy. It applies to Windows 10 version 1803 (build 10.0.17134) and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. The procedure below uses Intune to deliver the value through Windows Policy CSP.
What the Intune policy controls
AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions controls text suggestions shown when someone types with a physical, hardware keyboard. It is the appropriate node when the requirement concerns a USB, Bluetooth, built-in laptop, or other physical keyboard.

The setting is separate from AllowKeyboardTextSuggestions. Microsoft describes that other node as controlling text prediction for the on-screen keyboard, touch keyboard, and handwriting recognition tool. Choosing the broader node will not reliably enforce a requirement that specifically targets hardware-keyboard typing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Policy CSP accepts four operations for this setting: Add, Delete, Get, and Replace. Its value semantics are simple:
0means Not allowed; hardware-keyboard text suggestions are blocked by policy.1means Allowed; suggestions remain available, and Microsoft lists this as the default.
Because the path begins with ./Device/, Windows treats the setting as device scoped. It is not an individual user preference, even though the visible effect appears while a person is typing.
Supported Windows editions and versions
Microsoft’s support table lists Windows 10 version 1803 (10.0.17134) and later for this node. Supported editions are Pro, Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise LTSC. Confirm that the edition and build on your managed devices fall within that range before assigning the profile broadly.

The TextInput Policy CSP documentation notes that some settings in the overall CSP may still be under development. That warning does not change the node name or value semantics, but it is a reason to validate the specific setting on the Windows builds and input configurations used by your organization.
Choose whether to allow or block suggestions
| Decision | User experience | Integer | Policy scope and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow hardware-keyboard suggestions | Suggestions remain available while typing on a physical keyboard. | 1 |
Device-level policy delivered through Intune; Microsoft lists this as the default. |
| Block hardware-keyboard suggestions | Suggestions from the physical keyboard are suppressed. | 0 |
Device-level policy delivered through Intune, rather than a per-user preference. |
Use the allow value when predictive text is useful to the people using the device. Use the block value when the organization wants a consistent, policy-enforced experience that does not depend on what a user selects in the Windows Settings interface.
Deploy the setting with an Intune custom profile
Intune custom profiles send Windows configuration through Open Mobile Alliance Uniform Resource Identifier (OMA-URI) settings. The Windows client receives the OMA-URI and applies it through Policy CSP.

- Open the profile creation flow. In the Microsoft Intune admin center, choose Devices, open the Windows configuration area, and create a profile for Windows 10 and later.
- Select the custom profile template. Choose Templates and then the Custom profile type. This exposes the OMA-URI editor instead of a prebuilt settings catalog entry.
- Add an OMA-URI setting. In the custom profile, add a setting and paste this path exactly, including capitalization and punctuation:
./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/TextInput/AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions. - Set the data type. Select Integer. Do not enter the number as a text string.
- Enter the policy value. Enter
0for Not allowed or1for Allowed, according to the outcome selected for the device group. - Save the profile. Give the profile a name that identifies the hardware-keyboard text-suggestion decision, review the setting, and complete profile creation.
- Assign it to devices. Assign the profile to the target device group. This device assignment matches the
./Device/scope in the URI. - Monitor deployment. Use the profile’s device and per-setting status views in Intune to confirm that the assignment reaches the intended Windows clients.
The URI is case sensitive. A path that looks almost identical but changes Device, Vendor, MSFT, Policy, Config, TextInput, or the setting name can fail to apply.

Intune is the delivery mechanism; it does not itself render the suggestions or interpret keyboard input. After assignment, Intune sends the OMA-URI to the Windows device’s mobile-device-management channel. Windows Policy CSP then processes the integer and enforces the corresponding TextInput behavior.
The node’s supported operations are useful when managing the profile lifecycle. Add or Replace can set the desired integer, Get can retrieve the device’s policy value for management diagnostics, and Delete can remove the CSP value. A profile update that changes the integer from 0 to 1, or from 1 to 0, is therefore a policy change on the device rather than a request for every user to change a local setting.

Verify that the policy took effect
Check Intune assignment status
Start with the Intune profile status. Confirm that the test device is in the assigned group, that the profile is applicable to its Windows edition and version, and that the setting reports a successful deployment rather than an error or a pending state.
Check Windows MDM diagnostics
If the profile does not arrive, inspect the Intune and Windows MDM diagnostic information. Windows Event Viewer exposes the relevant administrative channel at Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider > Admin. Microsoft identifies malformed OMA-URI syntax and policy-application errors as common causes visible in this area.
Test with a hardware keyboard
Use a text field that accepts physical-keyboard input on a representative device. Type enough text to trigger the normal suggestion experience and observe whether suggestions are present when the profile contains 1 and suppressed when it contains 0. Keep the test focused on a physical keyboard; touch-keyboard or handwriting behavior is controlled by the separate keyboard-suggestion policy.

Troubleshoot common deployment problems
The profile is assigned but no device receives it
- Verify that the device, rather than only a user, is included in the assignment target.
- Confirm that the device runs a supported Windows edition and at least version 1803 (10.0.17134).
- Review Intune deployment status and then the DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider Admin log for enrollment or policy-processing errors.
The profile reports an OMA-URI or data-type error
- Compare the entered path character by character with
./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/TextInput/AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions. - Ensure the data type is Integer, not String, Boolean, or another type.
- Use only the supported values
0and1.
The physical keyboard still shows suggestions after setting 0
- Confirm in Intune that the device received the profile and that the deployed value is
0. - Check that the test is using a physical keyboard. If the observed suggestions come from the touch keyboard, on-screen keyboard, or handwriting tool, this node is not the controlling policy.
- Review the Windows MDM Admin log for a policy-application error and repeat the test after the device reports successful processing.
The setting behaves differently across devices
Use a controlled rollout with representative Windows builds and language or input configurations before expanding the assignment. The CSP support information covers the listed editions and versions, but input behavior can still warrant validation in the exact configurations your organization operates.
Changing or removing the policy
To change the enforced experience, edit the custom profile’s integer and deploy the replacement value: 1 allows hardware-keyboard suggestions and 0 blocks them. Monitor the updated profile status and verify the result in a physical-keyboard text field.
When the organization no longer wants the CSP value delivered by this profile, remove the setting using the CSP’s Delete operation or remove the profile assignment. Check the resulting device state after the change, because another management profile or the Windows default may then determine the behavior.
Important distinction: hardware versus on-screen keyboard suggestions
A frequent configuration mistake is selecting AllowKeyboardTextSuggestions because its name sounds broader. That node addresses text prediction for the on-screen keyboard, touch keyboard, and handwriting recognition tool. The hardware-keyboard requirement belongs to AllowHardwareKeyboardTextSuggestions and uses the device-scoped URI shown in this guide.
Keeping these policies separate lets an administrator suppress suggestions for physical-keyboard typing without unintentionally changing the touch or handwriting experience, or configure those input methods independently when the organization’s requirements call for it.
Recommended rollout sequence
- Identify the Windows editions, build numbers, languages, and input methods represented in the target population.
- Create the Windows 10 and later custom profile with the exact device-scoped OMA-URI and Integer value.
- Assign it to a small representative device group.
- Confirm Intune status and inspect the Windows DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider Admin channel for errors.
- Test a text field with a physical keyboard and record whether the selected allow or block behavior is present.
- Expand the assignment after the test devices consistently show the intended result.
This sequence separates delivery problems from input-method misunderstandings and limits the impact of a malformed URI or unsupported device.
