Rather than simply supplying a ready-to-run robot, it guides students through designing, building, programming, and testing a robot’s hardware and software. The classic Maze Edition builds the system progressively; TI-RSLK MAX takes a build-first approach with solderless assembly.
What is TI-RSLK?
TI-RSLK combines robot hardware with lessons, labs, and challenges. Students work through how components fit together—from circuits and a microcontroller to sensors, motors, and control code—then apply those pieces in a functioning robot. TI originally announced the Maze Edition as a university teaching kit with more than 60 electronic and mechanical components, including the SimpleLink MSP432P401R LaunchPad. What does the TI-RSLK curriculum teach?
The curriculum connects foundational concepts to the integrated robot rather than treating programming as a separate topic. Across its instructional materials, TI describes work in electrical, mechanical, digital, and software design.
- Electrical and hardware foundations: circuits, voltage, current, power, motor drivers, and power distribution.
- Embedded programming: C, microcontroller architecture, data structures, compiling, linking, downloading, and debugging.
- System integration: sensors, motors, interrupts, communication, and digital control.
- Robot challenges: maze solving, line following, and obstacle avoidance, as described for the Maze Edition and MAX curriculum.
TI’s Maze Edition introductory page describes 20 learning modules, supported by lecture videos and slides, lab documentation and demonstrations, quizzes, classroom activities, and other learning resources. TI characterizes MAX as a fundamental shift toward assembling the robot first, with pre-soldered boards intended to make assembly faster and more reliable. The classic Maze Edition instead uses a bottom-up sequence in which later modules build on earlier work and design choices can include sensor number and placement. What hardware does the classic Maze Edition use?
TI’s Maze Edition manual describes a base robot built around a chassis, two DC motors and wheels, six AA NiMH batteries, a motor driver and power distribution board, and several sensor types. These include IR distance, touch or bump, line sensors, and tachometers. The exact hardware to expect depends on the package being considered, so use the manual and current product listing for the specific edition rather than assuming all TI-RSLK kits contain the same parts. Who is the course aimed at?
The Maze Edition manual lists algebra, college physics, basic knowledge of computers and computer architecture, and C programming as prerequisites for its course context. That guidance helps set expectations for the documented curriculum; it does not mean a curious beginner is barred from exploring the kit, but learners without that background may need to build up the foundations as they go. - Identify the edition. Confirm whether your kit is the classic Maze Edition or TI-RSLK MAX, and use its matching manual and bill of materials.
- Install the edition’s software and resources. Follow the Module 1 material for Code Composer Studio and TI-RSLK downloads rather than assuming another edition’s instructions apply.
- Follow the intended sequence. For Maze Edition, expect a progressive build; for MAX, follow its build-first materials and then continue through its modules.
- Verify package contents before adding parts. Compare the current kit listing with the relevant edition’s documentation, especially if considering optional wireless components.
What TI-RSLK does—and does not—establish
The official TI materials describe the kit contents, curriculum structure, and engineering concepts covered. They do not establish independently measured learning gains or prove educational effectiveness. Likewise, TI’s stated MAX assembly time is a company launch claim, not an independent test result. Use the materials to understand what students are asked to do, while treating claims about educational outcomes as unproven by these sources.
