Hilla connects a Spring Boot Java backend to React views, generating TypeScript clients and types from Java services so the frontend can call selected backend operations through a typed interface. Its product status has changed: Vaadin announced in October 2025 that Hilla would be merged into Vaadin Flow, while clarifying that React support and key Hilla capabilities remain available. That makes Hilla worth understanding—but new projects should weigh its client-side model against Vaadin’s current primary focus on server-side Java UIs.

What is Hilla?

Hilla is Vaadin’s full-stack approach for building React client-side interfaces backed by Java, commonly in a Spring Boot application. Its main convenience is a connected Java and TypeScript workflow: expose selected Java services to the browser, and Hilla generates TypeScript accessors and types for the frontend. This gives the client a typed way to call backend methods without maintaining a separate handwritten client interface contract.

The request flow is: React view → generated TypeScript client → browser-callable Java service → application backend. The generated boundary helps keep client calls aligned with Java types, but it does not eliminate API design, authorization, validation, or other security work. The application still needs to decide which operations are exposed and who may use them.

How a Hilla application fits together

Java backend and browser-callable services

Java services run inside the Spring Boot application. A service must be made available for browser use before a React view can call its operations; the generated client is based on those exposed services and Java types.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

React views and routing

React provides the client-side interface. The official tutorial places frontend files under src/main/frontend, and Vaadin’s product page describes file-based routing. This separation lets the frontend handle client-side interaction while Java services provide application operations.

Generated types, forms, and UI components

Hilla generates TypeScript accessors and types from Java-side definitions. Vaadin also offers UI components, and the official tutorial demonstrates generated form models that use Java validation metadata. These tools reduce duplicated interface definitions, but teams still need to understand the behavior and constraints of the generated code and components they adopt.

Build and deployment

The tutorial’s finished project is a standard Spring Boot application, which can be run or deployed wherever Java applications are supported. That familiar deployment shape does not by itself settle which Hilla or Vaadin dependencies are appropriate for a particular release.

Hilla’s status after Vaadin’s October 2025 announcement

On 16 October 2025, Vaadin announced that Hilla would cease to be a standalone product and be merged into Vaadin Flow. Fredrik Rönnlund, Vaadin’s CMO, wrote: “Today, we’re ready for the next step: Hilla will be merged into Vaadin Flow and our main focus lies on building web UIs in pure Java.” Read Vaadin’s announcement.

Vaadin’s 29 October follow-up clarified that the shift in emphasis does not mean React support has disappeared. It said React support, client-side routing, stateless RPC endpoints, TypeScript generation from Java types, and form binding based on Java type metadata remain supported. Vaadin describes client-side React as appropriate for needs such as offline interaction or serving high user counts with minimal server requirements. Its primary direction, however, is now server-side Java UI. Read Vaadin’s follow-up.

For existing applications, Vaadin said the new direction would not cause application-code breaking changes in Vaadin 25. It noted that packaging adjustments could require small edits to Maven or Gradle files. This assurance is specific to Vaadin 25 and should not be read as a guarantee about every future major release.

What the official tutorial asks you to have

Vaadin’s current hands-on CRM tutorial lists these prerequisites; they are the tutorial’s requirements, not a guaranteed minimum for every Hilla release:

  • Java 17 or later.
  • Node 18 or later.
  • An IDE that supports Java and TypeScript.
  • Intermediate Java skills.

The tutorial walks through project creation, the Java and React source layout, browser-callable services, data grids, forms, and a production build. It says the Hilla CLI can initialize the sample project. Check the documentation and dependency compatibility for the specific release you plan to use: a Maven Central listing for dev.hilla:hilla-react-spring-boot-starter shows version 2.5.8, but that repository entry alone does not establish that it is the newest compatible release. Should you choose Hilla for a new project?

Make the decision around the kind of UI you need and the support horizon you expect, rather than treating the 2025 announcement as either a cancellation of React or an unchanged standalone roadmap.

  • Choose the client-side model deliberately. Hilla is a fit to evaluate when React views and client-side behavior matter, especially if offline interaction or low server requirements at high user counts are important.
  • Compare Vaadin’s primary model. If your team prefers to build web UIs in Java on the server, assess Vaadin Flow directly; this is Vaadin’s stated main focus.
  • Match the framework to team skills. Consider the team’s existing Java, Spring Boot, React, and TypeScript experience, including who will maintain both sides of the application.
  • Inventory Hilla-specific dependencies. Identify generated services, form binding, and components in use, then estimate the work to maintain or adapt them as Vaadin’s packaging and product organization evolve.
  • Set a release and support horizon. Confirm that the framework capabilities and dependency versions you need are documented for the release you intend to deploy. Vaadin’s Vaadin 25 assurance is not a promise for all later major versions.

For a new application, Vaadin advises keeping both Hilla’s current capabilities and the new product direction in view. Read the Vaadin 25 and Hilla update and the current tutorial, then verify release-specific details before committing to a stack.
