For an internship interview, follow the employer’s dress instructions first; if none are given, choose clean, comfortable clothing that fits the role, industry, and interview format. Bring resume copies, a pen and notebook, requested documents, and a few useful questions. For a virtual interview, prepare the requested digital materials and check your device and interview space.
What should I wear to an internship interview?
There is no single dress code for every internship. Start with any instructions from the employer, then consider the organization, industry, role, and whether you are meeting in person or online. George Mason Career Services describes business professional or business casual as a safe starting point while noting that expectations vary. If you are unsure, ask the interview coordinator:
“I want to make sure I understand your organizational culture and dress appropriately. What is the recommended attire for my interview?”
Choose an outfit that is clean, neat, comfortable, and appropriate for how you want to present yourself. A full suit is not automatically necessary, and you do not need to follow gendered clothing rules or a particular color palette. If the employer specifies business professional attire or the role calls for a more formal setting, use that guidance.

Do I need to buy new clothes?
No. The University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts Career Services advises candidates to consider suitable clothes they already own, discounted or thrifted options, and professional-attire resources through a campus career coach. A new purchase is not a prerequisite for interview-ready clothing.
What should I wear on a video interview?
Dress as you would for an in-person interview, and choose a suitable place to take the call. If your campus offers interview rooms or equipment, check what is available; access varies by institution.

What should I bring to an in-person interview?
Prioritize anything the employer specifically requested, then bring the basics you may need to refer to or take notes:
- Several copies of your resume.
- A pen and paper or a notebook.
- A short list of questions for the interviewer.
- Requested documents, such as a reference list or transcript.
- Relevant work samples, if they demonstrate a skill needed for the internship.
- The recruiter’s contact information and the details you need to find the location.
A folder can keep papers together, but you do not need to buy a particular portfolio. Bring work samples selectively: they are useful when they connect directly to the position, not as a substitute for answering questions about your experience.

What should I prepare before the interview?
Understand the employer and the role
Read the internship description closely and research the organization using its official website and recent public information. Note the responsibilities, skills, and details you want to clarify. Prepare examples from coursework, projects, previous work, volunteering, or activities that show how you have used relevant skills.
Practice explaining your experience
Texas State Career Services identifies common prompts such as “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your goals?” and “Why do you want to work for this organization?” You may also be asked behavioral questions about how you handled a past situation. A concise example can explain the context, what you did, and the result or lesson.

Confirm who you will meet, the format and expected duration, the location or meeting link, and any materials you have been asked to bring. Texas State Career Services recommends anticipating the interview format and asking about logistics when needed. UCR advises arriving 10–15 minutes early and planning for directions and traffic; treat that interval as UCR’s recommendation, not a universal rule.
For a virtual interview
- Confirm the meeting link and any instructions for joining.
- Check that your device and connection work, and arrange a suitable space.
- Have requested digital materials accessible.
- Ask your campus career center whether it offers a room or equipment if you need one; availability varies by institution.
UIC describes practice options for in-person and video or phone interviews, while Texas State notes that students may use their own equipment or borrow equipment from Career Services. Check directly with your own institution rather than assuming these services are offered everywhere.
