For an international trip, keep your passport, required entry documents, essential medication, phone, payment methods, and other irreplaceable items with you—not in a bag that could be checked. Use your cabin bag for a small clothing change, toiletries, chargers, and a personalized health kit, but confirm the operating airline’s baggage and battery rules and the security rules for every airport where you will be screened. U.S. screening rules are not automatically the rules at your connecting or return airport.
What should stay with you rather than in checked luggage?
Pack first for the things you cannot afford to lose access to during a flight, an unexpected gate-check, or a baggage delay. Keep these essentials on your person or in a small, accessible personal item, subject to your airline’s cabin-bag allowances.
- Travel documents: Your valid passport, required visa or electronic authorization, and boarding information. Keep copies of key documents separately from the originals, and have accessible digital copies as well.
- Essential medication: Necessary prescription medicines, preferably in their labeled original packaging, with prescription copies and supporting documentation. Check import rules for each destination and transit country before departure.
- Phone and payment: Your phone, payment cards, an appropriate amount of money, and emergency contacts. Save key contact and lodging information somewhere you can access if mobile service is unavailable.
- Personally indispensable aids: Prescription glasses or other aids you rely on during the journey.
The State Department’s International Travel Checklist advises travelers to carry prescription copies and labeled bottles. The department also recommends checking passport-validity rules: a six-month validity requirement applies in some countries, but it is not a universal rule. Its destination guidance is the place to start for entry requirements, including any additional documents a child may need when traveling without one or both parents.

Keep the small essentials bag easy to reach rather than buried under clothes. If an overhead bag has to be checked at the gate, you should be able to remove the items that must remain in the cabin quickly. Your airline may require baggage to be checked, and spare lithium batteries must stay in the cabin under FAA guidance.

How should you divide items between a personal item and an overhead carry-on?
Think of the personal item as the accessible essentials layer and the overhead bag as additional cabin storage. The right division depends on your carrier’s separate item allowances, size and weight limits, and the possibility that an overhead bag will need to be checked.
| Bag | Good candidates | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Small personal item | Passport and documents, medication, phone, payment methods, glasses, emergency contacts, and other essentials you need during the journey. | Check whether the airline permits a personal item in addition to a cabin bag, and confirm its dimensions and any weight limit. |
| Overhead cabin bag | A change of clothing, toiletries, chargers and cables, a destination-compatible adapter, and optional comfort items such as earplugs. | Check the airline’s cabin-bag dimensions, weight, and item-count rules. Keep spare batteries and power banks out of the bag if it is gate-checked. |
There is no single “international carry-on size” that applies to every carrier. Check the operating airline’s rules for each flight on your itinerary, particularly when different airlines operate connecting segments. The State Department’s travel checklist is a useful packing reference, but airline baggage policies determine which bags and items you may bring into the cabin.
Which medicines and health supplies belong in your carry-on?
Put necessary medicines in your accessible cabin bag, not in luggage you might not be able to reach. A medicine permitted in the United States may be restricted in another country, so check the rules for every destination and transit country before packing it.
The State Department’s medicine and health guidance advises carrying enough medication for the trip plus a few days in case of delays, subject to local limits. Keep medicines in their labeled packaging and carry prescription copies or other supporting documents. For controlled or otherwise restricted medicines, check the relevant country’s rules rather than assuming a U.S. prescription settles the question.
A health kit should reflect your own medical needs, destination, itinerary, trip duration, available space, and how you will carry it. The CDC’s Pack Smart guidance identifies items such as basic dressings, glasses or contact supplies, and relevant travel-health documents as considerations. Ask a clinician about condition-specific supplies; a retail first-aid kit is not a replacement for prescribed medicine.

These are prompts, not a universal medical packing list. What is appropriate depends on your health and itinerary.
What liquid toiletries can you take through U.S. airport security?
For ordinary liquids at the cited U.S. security checkpoint, TSA’s checklist specifies containers of 3.4 ounces or less, fitting in one clear quart-size zip-top bag, with one bag per passenger. Keep the bag easy to access. This is a U.S. checkpoint rule, not a worldwide guarantee or a complete statement about medically necessary liquids.
TSA’s Travel Checklist says: “Place your 3-1-1 bag with liquids, gels and aerosols in the front pocket of your carry-on for accessibility.” Follow the screening instructions for the airport where you are actually screened, including airports on your return or connection. Do not assume the U.S. rule applies unchanged elsewhere.
Pack only the toiletries you need for the journey and the immediate arrival period. If you bring bottles, compare their labeled capacity with the applicable checkpoint limit, and put them where you can retrieve the liquids bag without unpacking the rest of your cabin bag. Check the relevant airport instructions for any exceptions or additional restrictions rather than extrapolating from the ordinary-liquids rule.
Can a power bank or spare battery go in your carry-on?
Yes, spare lithium batteries—including power banks—must stay in the cabin rather than checked baggage. FAA guidance generally permits batteries up to 100 watt-hours (Wh); batteries rated 101–160 Wh require airline approval, with a limit of two spare batteries per passenger. Airlines may impose stricter limits.

Check the Wh marking on the battery itself and the current rules of the airline operating each flight. Do not rely only on a product description or a claim that a battery is “airline approved.” If the Wh rating is not clear, confirm what the carrier requires before traveling. The FAA’s PackSafe battery guidance covers passenger batteries, and directs travelers to account for airline policies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Keep spare batteries and power banks in a cabin bag or personal item, not checked luggage.
- If your overhead bag is gate-checked, remove the power bank and other spare lithium batteries before handing it over.
- Check the carrier’s quantity, approval, and charging restrictions, which may be tighter than the general FAA allowance.
- Protect batteries from damage and short circuits, following the airline’s instructions.
A battery’s presence in the cabin does not by itself establish that it is permitted on every flight; the rating, airline rules, and itinerary matter.
What else belongs in the cabin bag?
Once the documents, medicines, and batteries are accounted for, pack for comfort and for the first hours after arrival—not as a duplicate of your checked suitcase. A compact selection can help if checked baggage is delayed without making the cabin bag unnecessarily difficult to manage.
- One change of clothing: A change of underwear and clothing can be useful if baggage is delayed or the journey runs long.
- Chargers and cables: Bring the cable needed for your phone and any other essential device.
- Plug adapter: Choose one compatible with your destination and the device. An adapter changes plug fit; do not assume it makes every device electrically compatible.
- Personal health items: Include relevant glasses or contacts and basic first-aid supplies, tailored to your needs.
- Comfort items: Earplugs are an optional example; choose only items useful to you and worth the space.
The State Department’s pack list includes a phone charger and change of clothing, while the CDC’s packing guidance mentions earplugs, glasses or contacts, and basic first-aid items. These are practical suggestions, not requirements for every traveler.
How can you stay connected after landing?
Bring the phone and charging cable you need, then decide how you will access service abroad. The State Department identifies checking an existing phone plan, roaming, a local SIM, and an international eSIM as options; availability and terms depend on the destination, device compatibility, and plan.

Before departure, check whether your current service works where you are going and what its terms are. If considering a SIM or eSIM, confirm destination availability and that your phone is compatible. Save emergency contacts and lodging details in an accessible form so you can find them if connectivity fails. Match a plug adapter to the destination and device rather than assuming one adapter or charging arrangement works everywhere. The State Department’s checklist includes guidance on phone service and destination adapters.
Which documents or insurance details depend on your itinerary?
Some travelers need paperwork beyond a passport and entry authorization; others do not. Check the destination-specific entry and health requirements for your itinerary instead of treating every document as universal.
Depending on the trip, useful documents may include prescription copies, vaccination proof, child-travel permission, driving documents, lodging details, emergency contacts, and insurance policy information. The CDC recommends considering relevant travel-health documents, and the State Department advises checking destination entry rules and medication restrictions. Keep document copies separate from originals so they are not all lost together.
Insurance is a decision to make from the policy terms, not a mandatory item to buy for every trip. If insured, keep the policy details accessible and confirm territorial validity, emergency medical coverage, and medical evacuation coverage. The State Department notes that Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for care outside the United States. Its medicine and health page, last updated August 11, 2025, gives US$20,000–US$200,000 as an illustrative cost range for medical evacuation by air ambulance back to the United States; actual costs depend on location and condition, so this is not a quote or a traveler-specific estimate.
What should you verify before leaving?
Use the itinerary, not a generic packing list, to make the final rules check. Review these items before you close the bag:

- Airport screening: Check security instructions for each airport where you will be screened. Treat TSA’s cited liquids rule as U.S.-specific.
- Connectivity and power: Check phone service and device compatibility, and select a destination-compatible adapter.
The airline and the countries on your route determine which rules apply. FAA guidance warns that airline and international rules may be more restrictive, so a permission that applies on one segment should not be assumed for the whole itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a visa if I’m only changing planes in another country?
Transit requirements vary by country and itinerary, so do not assume a connection is exempt from entry rules. Check the destination and transit-country guidance for your passport and travel dates before departure.
Should I keep both paper and digital copies of my travel documents?
The State Department recommends carrying copies separately from originals and retaining accessible digital copies. Keeping the copy in a different place from the original reduces the chance that one misplaced bag takes both.
