Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is not a confirmed replacement for The Last of Us. It is Naughty Dog’s new PlayStation 5 franchise, set thousands of years in the future and led by bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun. The Last of Us Part II, by contrast, is a released post-pandemic survival drama whose systems—stealth, melee combat, shooting, crafting and skill upgrades—are already documented.

The meaningful comparison is therefore between a known game and an announced direction. Naughty Dog promises that Intergalactic will have the deepest gameplay in the studio’s history and will push lessons from earlier franchises further, but it has not yet shown enough to confirm an open world, specific weapons, crafting, a particular combat model or a release date.

What Naughty Dog has confirmed about Intergalactic

A new IP rather than another Last of Us chapter

Naughty Dog announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a new franchise. That matters because the game is not being presented as a sequel, side story or continuation of the world built in The Last of Us. Familiar authorship does not make the settings interchangeable: Naughty Dog is carrying its character-focused, cinematic approach into a different science-fiction premise.

The announcement describes Intergalactic as a PlayStation 5 project and says the studio is aiming for “the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history.” The same statement says the team is taking lessons from its previous franchises and pushing them beyond anything it has done before. That is a design ambition, not a revealed list of mechanics. Until gameplay is shown, “deepest” cannot be translated into a confirmed number of weapons, a particular progression tree or a map structure.

Sempiria and a far-future premise

PlayStation’s official page places the story on Sempiria, thousands of years in the future. The time scale alone creates a very different fictional foundation from The Last of Us Part II’s recognizable, post-pandemic America. It permits technology, institutions and social history that could not exist in Ellie’s setting, but those possibilities should not be mistaken for announced features.

Jordan A. Mun is the confirmed protagonist. The available description identifies her as the character whose adventure players will follow, while leaving the details of her background, objectives, companions and antagonists for a later reveal. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are attached to the soundtrack, adding a confirmed musical collaboration but not yet revealing how the score will function during exploration, combat or story scenes.

Development began in 2020, but there is no launch date

PlayStation says development has been underway since 2020. A September 2026 studio update from Neil Druckmann says the team is “heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet” and promises a proper look at Jordan’s adventure in a future full reveal.

That wording confirms active development and explains why many practical questions remain unanswered. It does not announce a launch window. No official source in the available material confirms a release year, preorder, price or retail SKU, so any date presented as fact would be speculation.

What The Last of Us Part II actually establishes as the baseline

A grounded survival drama

The Last of Us Part II follows Ellie after she has established a comparatively settled life in Jackson. The story sends her toward a pursuit of revenge and closure, and the cycle of violence creates escalating moral conflicts. Its world is grounded in the aftermath of a pandemic: hostile survivor groups, scarce resources and evolved infected threats shape both the narrative and the play space.

That grounding affects the player’s expectations. A ruined building, a patrol route or a workbench has a recognizable physical logic. The drama asks what violence does to people who believe they are protecting someone, seeking justice or simply surviving. Intergalactic can preserve Naughty Dog’s interest in intimate character consequences without repeating that particular moral and historical framework.

A documented stealth and combat loop

Part II’s official materials describe dynamic stealth, fluid movement and high-intensity melee combat. Naughty Dog’s gameplay presentation says the engine was overhauled, new combat mechanics were introduced and the analog stealth system was rebuilt. Environments became broader and more vertical, giving players more room to choose between concealment, repositioning and direct confrontation.

Ellie can go prone and use tall grass as concealment. Human enemies communicate and react to their surroundings, making a patrol less predictable than a collection of isolated targets. Guard dogs can follow her scent, forcing the player to consider movement and timing rather than relying on one hiding spot. These are concrete examples of how the game turns stealth into a changing problem.

When stealth breaks, the combat model supports several responses. Players can use firearms, close-quarters attacks and the environment while deciding whether to continue fighting or escape and hide. The official description also identifies crafting items, skills and upgrades as part of the survival loop, so preparation and progression are connected to moment-to-moment risk.

Infected threats and build choices

Shamblers add a distinct infected threat to the encounters. Their presence means that the player must account for enemy behavior and area denial in addition to human sightlines. Skill paths let players tune aspects such as survival, crafting or stealth, allowing the same campaign to emphasize different priorities.

Craftable pistol silencers expand the stealth toolbox. They do not make the player invisible; ammunition, positioning and enemy awareness still matter. The broader point for this comparison is that Part II combines authored cinematic sequences with systems that let players solve encounters in more than one way.

What the PS5 Remastered edition changes

The PS5 Remastered edition preserves the campaign while adding No Return randomized encounters, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play and Speedrun Mode. It also includes PS5 visual and performance improvements, DualSense support and additional accessibility features. Those additions matter when comparing the games as products: Part II is a known, purchasable release with a defined feature set, whereas Intergalactic is still an announced project.

How the settings could produce different experiences

Post-pandemic America versus distant science fiction

Part II uses a world whose danger comes from infection, human conflict and the collapse of familiar infrastructure. Its spaces are often recognizable places transformed by abandonment and occupation. Intergalactic’s Sempiria is separated from that reference point by thousands of years. Even if both games use corridors, arenas or hub-like areas, the fiction can give those spaces a different purpose and visual language.

The science-fiction setting could support technologies, transport systems or social structures that have no equivalent in The Last of Us. It could also make movement feel less constrained by contemporary architecture. Those are reasonable possibilities, not confirmations. Naughty Dog has not announced a specific traversal system, vehicle, faction structure or type of technology.

Different dramatic engines

Ellie’s campaign is organized around the consequences of a known act of violence and the attempt to find closure. Jordan’s story is currently defined only at a high level: she is the protagonist of an adventure on Sempiria. The absence of a public plot summary means it is too early to claim that Intergalactic will be a revenge story, a survival story or a direct thematic continuation of The Last of Us.

What can be compared is the likely role of character performance. Naughty Dog’s established work places personal relationships and emotional stakes inside playable spaces rather than separating “story” from “gameplay.” Intergalactic’s new setting changes the subject matter, but the studio’s stated ambition suggests it wants the player to engage with Jordan as a character, not merely use her as a viewpoint for science-fiction action.

Known systems versus an unshown design

Part II can be described in mechanical terms because Naughty Dog has shown how its stealth, combat, crafting and upgrades work. Intergalactic cannot yet be described with the same precision. The phrase “deepest gameplay” could refer to systemic encounters, richer progression, more expressive traversal, greater interaction between tools or something else entirely.

Until a gameplay reveal demonstrates those systems, the responsible comparison is conditional: Intergalactic may build on Naughty Dog’s previous lessons, but it has not been confirmed to include prone movement, scent-tracking enemies, crafting benches, silencers, skill trees or any particular melee and shooting model.

Will Intergalactic have stealth and crafting like The Last of Us?

There is no official confirmation that it will. The Last of Us Part II has documented stealth and crafting, including prone concealment, tall grass, enemy communication, guard dogs that track scent, craftable pistol silencers and skill paths. Intergalactic’s announcement promises deeper gameplay and says it will extend lessons from earlier franchises, which makes a connection plausible at the level of design philosophy.

Plausibility is not proof. A future reveal could show stealth, crafting, both, or neither. It could also use different systems that serve a similar purpose in a science-fiction setting. For example, a technology-based tool might alter how Jordan approaches an encounter without functioning like a Part II crafting recipe. Until Naughty Dog identifies the mechanics, comparisons should use “could” and “might,” not “has.”

Is Intergalactic open world?

Open-world structure has not been confirmed in the official material available for this comparison. The announcement and PlayStation description establish the setting, protagonist and development status, but they do not describe a seamless open world, a hub-and-spoke layout, linear chapters or a mission map.

Part II itself demonstrates why setting scale and world structure are separate questions. Its environments are broader and more vertical than those in Naughty Dog’s earlier work, and they offer meaningful choices during encounters, but that does not make the campaign an open-world game. Intergalactic should be judged by the structure Naughty Dog eventually shows rather than by assumptions drawn from its science-fiction premise.

When will Intergalactic release, and can you buy it now?

No official release date has been announced. The September 2026 studio update points to a future full reveal, not a launch window. Intergalactic is in development for PlayStation 5, but the available official information does not establish a retail SKU, preorder listing or price.

The Last of Us Part II is the immediately available comparison because it released on June 19, 2020, and its PS5 Remastered edition is a defined product. That difference in buying status is practical: you can evaluate Part II’s actual campaign and modes today, while any purchase decision about Intergalactic must wait for formal product information.

What could “the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history” mean?

Naughty Dog’s wording is intentionally broad. In context, it says the studio wants to take what it learned from previous franchises and push it further. A deeper game might involve more interactions between stealth, combat and exploration; a progression system with more meaningful trade-offs; encounters that react to player choices; or a wider range of solutions to a problem.

Those examples are interpretive possibilities, not announced functions. The statement does establish that gameplay is a central part of the project’s pitch rather than an afterthought to its cinematic presentation. It also sets a high bar: the eventual reveal should show what the player repeatedly does, how choices affect outcomes and why the systems belong in Sempiria rather than merely transplanting a post-pandemic formula into space.

What to look for in Naughty Dog’s next full reveal

A reveal can answer the comparison more reliably than speculation. These are the questions that will determine how Intergalactic differs from Part II:

  • Encounter structure: Are spaces linear, hub-based or open, and can players approach objectives from multiple directions?
  • Stealth rules: Does Jordan hide, distract, track or manipulate enemies, and what information does the game expose to the player?
  • Combat: Which weapons or abilities are shown, how does close combat work, and can encounters be escaped instead of completed through force?
  • Resource management: Is there crafting, equipment maintenance, ammunition scarcity or another system that creates preparation decisions?
  • Progression: Are upgrades permanent, branching, equipment-based or tied to story milestones?
  • Traversal: Does Sempiria require climbing, vehicles, environmental tools or another movement model?
  • World organization: How are missions, optional activities and narrative scenes arranged?
  • Social context: Which characters, groups or institutions shape Jordan’s goals and conflicts?
  • Accessibility and performance: Which PlayStation 5 display, control and accessibility options are supported?
  • Commercial details: What edition, release date and purchase options are officially listed?

Until those questions are answered on screen or in a formal product announcement, a feature-by-feature verdict would overstate what is known.

Why the comparison should remain cautious

Comparing a finished game with an announced one creates an information imbalance. Part II has years of demonstrations, a released campaign and a Remastered edition whose additions can be listed precisely. Intergalactic has a premise, a protagonist, a platform, a soundtrack collaboration and a development statement.

That imbalance does not make the comparison useless. It clarifies the right question. Instead of asking whether Intergalactic already is “another Last of Us,” ask whether Naughty Dog is applying its established strengths—cinematic character work, authored spaces and tactile encounter design—to a new science-fiction framework. The official record supports that framing while leaving the actual systems open.

Verdict: a new science-fiction direction, not a confirmed replacement

Intergalactic differs from The Last of Us Part II first in premise: Sempiria and a far-future timeline replace the grounded post-pandemic setting of Jackson and Seattle. It also has a new protagonist, Jordan A. Mun, and is being developed as a new franchise for PlayStation 5. Part II remains the concrete gameplay reference, with documented stealth, melee, shooting, crafting, enemy behaviors and skill upgrades.

Naughty Dog’s promise of its deepest gameplay suggests that Intergalactic will carry forward lessons from those systems while attempting something broader, but the studio has not yet shown enough to identify the mechanics. It is not confirmed to be open world, to include crafting, to use a particular combat system or to launch in any specific year. The next authoritative milestone is the promised full reveal of Jordan’s adventure.
