Interana announced a $20 million Series B on January 21, 2015, led by Index Ventures. The company said it would use the financing to expand its enterprise business through product development and go-to-market work.

Who invested in Interana’s Series B?

Fenwick & West’s January 21, 2015 transaction announcement identifies Index Ventures as the lead investor. New investors were AME Cloud Ventures, Harris Barton, and Mike Olson. Existing investors Battery Ventures, Data Collective, and Fuel Capital also participated. Index Ventures general partner Mike Volpi was to join Interana’s board.

How much had Interana raised in total?

VentureBeat reported that the Series B brought Interana’s total funding to $28.2 million. Fortune described the total as slightly less than $30 million. These are contemporaneous 2015 reports of company financing, not measures of product performance.

What did Interana’s software do?

Interana was presented as an event-based analytics company. Its software was intended to help teams explore customer behavior and product usage across clickstream and other event data. VentureBeat described a visual interface for direct, ad hoc analysis of large event sets.

A representative question was, “Why did page views increase this week?” The idea was to investigate changes over time by examining event data; the example describes the intended use, not a verified performance result. VentureBeat’s coverage and Data Center Knowledge’s January 23, 2015 account describe the product in that historical context.

What did Interana plan to do with the money?

The transaction announcement said the funding would support enterprise expansion through product development and go-to-market strategies. Fortune added that Interana planned to build its sales and marketing capabilities, expand product development resources, and create additional proof-of-concept installations. These were announced plans, not confirmation of what the company later accomplished. Fenwick’s announcement and Fortune’s January 21, 2015 report provide those details.

What was said about the investment and product?

Fortune quoted Index Ventures general partner Mike Volpi, drawing on his investment blog post: “What really sets Interana apart is that their solution combines pieces of a product that usually gets separated into different silos.” Interana CEO Ann Johnson told Fortune, “We want to eliminate long hallway discussions, and make it easier for people to get things done.” Both comments were statements made at the time of the 2015 investment, not measured outcomes.

Fortune also reported that early customers included software company Asana and the Silicon Valley division of telecommunications operator Orange. That was the customer picture reported in 2015, not a current customer list.
