Intel-built Aurora did not top the latest TOP500 overall ranking covered here: in the list announced June 23, 2026, it placed fourth with an HPL result of 1.012 exaflop/s. AMD-powered El Capitan ranked second at 1.809 exaflop/s, and Frontier ranked third at 1.353 exaflop/s. The result is specific to the TOP500’s High Performance Linpack benchmark—not a universal verdict on every kind of supercomputing workload.
Where Aurora placed in the June 2026 TOP500
The TOP500’s 67th edition, announced June 23, 2026, ranks systems by their results on the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark. China’s LineShine was No. 1, followed by El Capitan, Frontier, and Aurora. The official June 2026 TOP500 list reports these HPL results:

On the same HPL measure, Aurora’s reported result is below both systems. That establishes the placement; the ranking itself does not establish that AMD technology caused the difference or that Aurora is inferior for every scientific or AI workload.
What Aurora’s TOP500 figures mean
TOP500 lists Aurora with 9,264,128 cores, an HPL Rmax of 1,012 petaflop/s, and an Rpeak of 1,980.01 petaflop/s. Rmax is the reported result on HPL. Rpeak is a theoretical peak figure, which TOP500 calculates using the advertised CPU clock rate; it is not the measured HPL result. The same HPL result is expressed as 1.012 exaflop/s because one exaflop is 1,000 petaflops.

Aurora ranks differently on other benchmarks
A placement only has meaning alongside the benchmark. TOP500’s June 2026 tables put Aurora sixth in HPCG, with 5.61 petaflop/s, and second in HPL-MxP, with 11.6 exaflop/s. In the HPL-MxP table, El Capitan ranks first at 16.7 exaflop/s and Frontier third at 11.4 exaflop/s. These are distinct benchmark results, not scores on a shared scale that can be directly compared with the overall HPL ranking. See TOP500’s June 2026 HPCG and June 2026 HPL-MxP tables.
How Aurora, El Capitan, and Frontier are built
Aurora
TOP500 lists Aurora at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility in Illinois. Intel built it on an HPE Cray EX Intel Exascale Compute Blade platform. Its listed components include Intel Xeon CPU Max processors, Intel Data Center GPU Max accelerators, and a Cray Slingshot-11 interconnect. System details are available on Aurora’s TOP500 profile.

TOP500 describes El Capitan as an HPE Cray EX255a system with fourth-generation AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct MI300A accelerators. Its profile is listed at TOP500’s El Capitan entry.
Frontier
TOP500 describes Frontier as an HPE Cray EX235a system with third-generation AMD EPYC processors, AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators, and Slingshot-11 interconnect. Its profile is listed at TOP500’s Frontier entry.

What the ranking does—and does not—show
The headline is accurate when read narrowly: Aurora did not take the top position in the June 2026 overall TOP500 HPL ranking, and two AMD-powered systems placed ahead of it. TOP500’s reported placements and specifications support that comparison, but they do not provide a causal analysis of why each system produced its result or settle performance for applications beyond the benchmark being reported.
AMD’s June 23, 2026 corporate post says AMD technology powers four of the ten leading TOP500 systems, including second-place El Capitan and third-place Frontier. That is AMD’s own vendor framing; the TOP500 table is the primary source for the rankings.
