Intel began transitioning its product drivers to Windows DCH in November 2018. The first Intel graphics release reported at the time was version 25.20.100.6444, described in contemporaneous coverage as a Windows Modern Driver or Universal Windows Driver (UWD). This is a historical milestone, not a recommendation to download that 2018 version today.
What Intel changed in November 2018
Intel said it would begin distributing Windows DCH Drivers for its products in November 2018. Its later support article describes the transition as applying to Intel product driver updates on Windows 10 and later, and Microsoft Windows Server 2019 and later. DCH is the terminology Intel uses in that support article; 2018 coverage also referred to the model as Windows Modern Drivers or Universal Windows Drivers (UWD). Intel’s DCH driver introduction
PC Gamer reported on 29 November 2018 that Intel’s new graphics driver was its first to support Microsoft’s Windows Modern Drivers. Neowin reported the day before that the initial graphics release was version 25.20.100.6444, offered only as a 64-bit driver for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and later. Those details describe that release’s historical scope; they do not establish compatibility with a current PC or Windows installation. PC Gamer’s 2018 report · Neowin’s 2018 report
What “Universal Windows Driver” meant
Contemporaneous reporting described the new model as a single driver package usable across compatible device types and form factors. “Universal” does not mean that one Intel package works on every Windows computer: the driver still has to match the specific Intel hardware and operating-system version. DCH names the driver platform transition Intel documents; UWD and Windows Modern Drivers were terms used in reporting around the 2018 change.

What the first reported graphics release included
PC Gamer’s November 2018 account said the release updated automatic game tuning, reduced RAM consumption when using OpenGL, improved Vulkan driver stability, and improved battery life when Display Refresh Rate Switching was used with supported monitors. These are claims reported for that release, not independent test results or evidence of a general performance gain from DCH drivers. PC Gamer’s report on the release
Neowin also reported support or optimization for games including Fallout 4, Far Cry 5, FIFA 18, Paladins, Path of Exile, The Sims 4, Smite, Borderlands 2, Euro Truck Simulator 2, PUBG, Rocket League, and The Witcher 3. This is a period-specific list from its coverage, not a complete or current compatibility list. Neowin’s 2018 report

How to find an Intel driver now
For a current driver, use Intel’s support routes rather than relying on the historical 25.20.100.6444 release. Intel says its Driver & Support Assistant (DSA) can detect a machine’s configuration, identify Intel drivers, notify users when updates are available, and offer updates. Users who want to select a driver manually can use Intel Download Center. Intel notes that DSA does not currently work for Windows Server or Ethernet products; it directs those users to Download Center. Intel’s DCH driver introduction and update guidance
- For most supported Windows PCs, use Intel Driver & Support Assistant to identify available Intel updates.
- For manual selection, Windows Server, or Ethernet products, use Intel Download Center and check that the selected package matches the hardware and operating system.
Can you roll back from a DCH driver?
Intel says rolling back to a legacy driver is possible, but not recommended: it involves a complex process that could cause system instability, particularly with graphics drivers. Intel’s support article, last reviewed 14 February 2025, gives this warning. Intel’s rollback guidance

PC Gamer’s 2018 coverage relayed installation advice from Intel at the time: remove the newer driver through Windows Apps and Features, reboot, and then install the legacy driver. It also relayed Intel’s warning against installing through an INF/Have-Disk method, which bypassed Intel’s installer. Because that procedure was reported in 2018, do not treat it as current instructions for every PC. If a legacy driver is necessary, follow current Intel and computer-maker guidance for the exact system rather than improvising a rollback.

The 2018 release marks Intel’s move toward the DCH driver model and documents specific changes reported for that graphics package. It does not prove that DCH always improves performance, that the old version is suitable for a current installation, or that any driver package is compatible with all Intel-based systems. For a present-day update decision, hardware and operating-system matching matter more than the “Universal” label attached to the transition.
