The Intel Xeon w9-3495X is a 56-core, 112-thread workstation processor built for single-socket systems that need substantial parallel CPU performance, memory bandwidth, and PCIe expansion. It launched in Q1 2023 as part of Intel’s Sapphire Rapids-WS family. Its 350 W base power and 420 W maximum turbo power make platform, cooling, and power-delivery choices central to any build.

What the W9-3495X is designed to do

Intel positions the W-3400 family for professional creators, media and entertainment work, engineering, and data science. The processor’s 56 cores can benefit CPU-rendering, simulation, compilation, and other workloads that keep many threads busy, provided the software scales across them. Its eight memory channels and PCIe lane capacity are relevant when a workstation must combine large memory configurations with multiple accelerators, storage devices, or high-speed networking.

More cores do not automatically make it the best choice for every workstation. Applications that rely mainly on a small number of fast cores, or that do not scale well across many threads, may not use its full parallel capacity. Compare systems using the applications and workloads that matter to you, not core count alone.

Intel’s launch performance claims

In its February 2023 launch release, Intel reported up to 28% higher single-thread performance and up to 120% higher multithread performance versus the Xeon W-3275. Intel described these as SPEC-based comparisons on validation platforms. They are vendor-reported results, not independent tests or a guarantee of the difference in a particular application or finished system.

Motherboard, memory, and expansion requirements

A build needs a workstation motherboard designed for the W-3400 platform and the processor’s FCLGA4677 socket. A W790/LGA4677 motherboard is a platform candidate, but socket fit alone does not establish processor support: check the specific board’s CPU support list, BIOS requirements, memory rules, and validated configurations before buying.

  • Memory: The W-3400 platform uses DDR5 ECC RDIMMs. The processor specification lists support for up to 4 TB of DDR5-4800 memory across eight channels; actual capacity and supported speeds depend on the motherboard and its validated DIMM configuration.
  • PCIe devices: Intel specifies up to 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Plan lane allocation across GPUs, NVMe storage, and networking cards using the motherboard’s slot and bandwidth documentation; the headline lane count does not mean every board exposes all lanes in the same way.
  • Platform checks: Confirm the board’s BIOS supports the exact CPU, that its memory list covers the intended RDIMM modules and capacity, and that its power delivery and chassis layout suit the complete configuration.

Power and cooling for a 350 W processor

Intel lists 350 W base power and 420 W maximum turbo power for the w9-3495X. These are processor power figures, not the total draw of a workstation; GPUs, memory, drives, fans, and other components add to system demand. Choose a power supply and motherboard for the whole build, with adequate capacity for sustained workloads and the installed accelerators.

Use a high-capacity cooler explicitly compatible with the LGA4677 socket and the selected chassis. A cooler’s nominal rating alone does not establish that a system can sustain high CPU loads: airflow, room temperature, motherboard power settings, and nearby GPU heat also matter. Check the board and cooler makers’ compatibility guidance and the workstation vendor’s validated thermal configuration where applicable.

W9-3495X price and buying considerations

Intel’s 2026 product specification lists a $6,478 recommended customer price. That figure is Intel guidance, not a current street price; retailer stock and pricing were not established. The cost of a usable workstation also includes a compatible W790/LGA4677 motherboard, DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory, an LGA4677-capable cooler, a suitable power supply, and any GPUs or storage required for the job.

Compare complete systems rather than treating the CPU’s recommended price as the build cost. Before choosing a system, weigh CPU performance in your applications, memory capacity and bandwidth, PCIe allocation, cooling and power delivery, motherboard BIOS and vendor validation, and total system price.
