Intel launched Montevina under its commercial name, Intel Centrino 2 Processor Technology, on July 15, 2008. It was a notebook platform—not a single processor—built around new mobile Core 2 Duo CPUs, a Mobile Intel 45 Express chipset, and Intel Wi-Fi Link 5000 wireless, with options including switchable graphics, WiMAX, and a business version with vPro.

What was Intel Montevina?

Montevina was Intel’s codename for the platform it released as Centrino 2. Intel described Centrino 2 as a coordinated set of notebook technologies, rather than one chip or a particular laptop model. Nearly 250 consumer and business notebook designs were planned for the platform, according to Intel’s July 2008 launch announcement.

The platform was intended to combine mobile performance and battery-life improvements with wireless networking, graphics choices, high-definition entertainment features, and—in business systems—remote management capabilities. Which features a specific laptop had depended on its configuration.

What processors and components did Centrino 2 introduce?

At launch, Intel announced five new mobile Core 2 Duo processors and the Mobile Intel 45 Express chipset family. The platform also introduced Intel Wi-Fi Link 5000 wireless products. Intel characterized the combination as a platform, so the Centrino 2 label alone does not identify the exact processor, graphics hardware, or wireless adapter fitted to a laptop.

  • Processors: Five new Core 2 Duo models were announced. Intel described a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Extreme mobile processor as its highest-performing dual-core mobile processor at launch.
  • Power: Intel said three of the new processors had a 25 W rating, about 30% lower than preceding designs. That is a processor wattage claim, not a guarantee of whole-laptop power use or battery runtime.
  • Chipset: The launch introduced the Mobile Intel 45 Express chipset family.
  • Graphics: Switchable graphics could let a notebook move between integrated and discrete graphics, balancing lower power use against graphics performance. It was a configuration capability, not a feature present in every Centrino 2 laptop.

What wireless did the platform support?

Intel Wi-Fi Link 5000 products supported draft 802.11n. Intel stated a maximum data rate of up to 450 Mbps and compared the series with older 802.11a/g technology, claiming five times the speed and twice the range. These are Intel’s launch-era product claims, not a promise of real-world throughput or coverage; actual results depend on the adapter, access point, network conditions, and configuration.

Wi-Fi Link 5000 products were shipping to customers when Centrino 2 launched, and Intel said laptops would arrive in July and August 2008. WiMAX was a separate, optional future capability: Intel said a combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 5050 module would arrive later in 2008 for future Centrino 2 laptops. Thus, Centrino 2 did not mean that every system had WiMAX built in.

What did Centrino 2 with vPro add?

Intel offered a business variant called Intel Centrino 2 with vPro Technology. Its security and manageability capabilities were intended to make notebook fleets easier for organizations to manage, update, and repair. Buyers should check the exact model’s specifications: the vPro business offering was not a universal property of all Centrino 2 laptops.

What did Intel mean by “HD-to-Go”?

Intel marketed Centrino 2 for mobile entertainment as “HD-to-Go.” Its launch release said the platform could provide enough performance and battery life to watch a typical full-length Blu-ray movie on one battery charge, alongside support for online games and faster downloads. Intel cautioned that performance on final products could vary. The statement was a platform-level launch claim, not confirmation that any particular Centrino 2 notebook included a Blu-ray drive, a suitable display, or a battery capable of that runtime.

How to identify or compare a Centrino 2 laptop today

The Centrino 2 name describes a 2008 platform, but it is not enough to determine a legacy notebook’s present-day capability or compatibility. For a specific machine, compare its exact model and configuration using these details:

  • Processor model and clock speed, plus its stated thermal design power.
  • Chipset and whether graphics are integrated, discrete, or switchable.
  • The installed wireless adapter model; do not infer WiMAX support from the Centrino 2 badge.
  • Display resolution and whether the notebook has Blu-ray playback hardware.
  • Whether the machine is a vPro business configuration.
  • Battery condition, upgradeability, and compatibility with the operating system and software you intend to use.

For an older notebook, current condition and operating-system support matter as much as its original platform features. The 2008 launch specifications do not establish current software, streaming-service, or wireless-network compatibility.
