Verdict: The Intel NUC 9 Extreme, or Ghost Canyon, is an unusually upgradeable 5-liter desktop that can take a short, dual-slot graphics card. Its modular design and compact footprint are the point; the trade-offs are a tight GPU size limit and a high finished-system cost. It is a compelling specialist build, not a price-first gaming PC—and its 2020 launch-era prices do not establish what one costs in 2026.

What the NUC 9 Extreme is

Ghost Canyon is a small-form-factor desktop built around a removable Compute Element: the processor, memory sockets and storage connections are housed in a module that plugs into the chassis. Intel announced it in April 2020 as a 5-liter gaming system with support for desktop-style discrete graphics. That combination distinguishes it from a typical mini PC, where graphics expansion is often limited to integrated graphics or external devices.

The flagship NUC9i9QNX uses a Core i9-9980HK. Intel also offered Core i7-9750H and Core i5-9300H Extreme variants. The platform is now a legacy 2019-generation processor design in a 2020-era product, so buyers should weigh its modularity against its age rather than treating it as a current-generation system.

Specifications and upgrade options

Part What Intel specifies What that means for a build
Compute Element CPU Core i9-9980HK: 8 cores, 16 threads, 2.40GHz base and up to 5.00GHz turbo; Intel UHD Graphics 630. Core i7-9750H and Core i5-9300H variants were also listed. The i9 model has integrated graphics, but a discrete card is the route to gaming-class graphics.
Chassis 238 × 216 × 96mm; approximately 5 liters. Very compact for a system with an internal PCIe graphics card, but the card’s length and thickness are constrained.
Memory Two DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM sockets; up to 64GB. Memory is a standard replaceable laptop-style SO-DIMM format, not desktop DIMMs.
Storage Two M.2 key-M slots supporting PCIe Gen 3 NVMe or SATA drives. There are two internal M.2 positions for compatible drives; verify drive interface and length against the exact kit documentation before buying.
Graphics expansion PCIe x16 slot for a dual-slot card up to 8 inches long. Check the exact card dimensions and power requirements; the slot description does not mean every dual-slot GPU will fit.
Power and connectivity 500W internal power supply; Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0a, dual Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 listed in Intel’s catalog. These features are part of the platform specification, but the graphics card still needs to fit the chassis and operate within the system’s power and thermal limits.

How the modular design works in practice

The removable Compute Element is the NUC’s most distinctive upgrade feature: rather than replacing the whole computer, an owner can remove the processor module. Memory, M.2 storage and the PCIe graphics card use familiar standards, making those upgrades more approachable than in many sealed mini PCs. Modularity is not the same as unlimited longevity, however; future Compute Element compatibility and availability should not be assumed from the original design alone.

  • 9th Generation Intel Core i7-9750H (NUC9i7QN) with Intel UHD Graphics 350 MHz - 1 15 GHz
  • Supports Microsoft Windows
  • Supports Intel Optane SSD and Intel Optane Memory M10 and H10 ready
  • Support up to 3x 4K displays 2x Thunderbolt 3 HDMI 2 0a

For an upgrade or a used barebones purchase, plan for the components that are not included and check physical compatibility before ordering:

  • DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM memory, up to the platform’s 64GB maximum.
  • One or two compatible M.2 drives; the platform lists both PCIe Gen 3 NVMe and SATA support.
  • A dual-slot graphics card no longer than 8 inches, with its exact dimensions and power needs checked against the specific kit.
  • An operating system, if one is needed; it is not included in the barebones kit described in the launch-era pricing.

Review configurations and the price of compactness

Launch-era pricing illustrates why the barebones figure can be misleading. Tom’s Hardware reported a $1,639.99 launch price for the Core i9 kit, excluding RAM, storage, a discrete GPU and an operating system. Its configured review system—with 16GB RAM, Intel Optane storage, a 1TB NVMe SSD, an Asus RTX 2070 Mini and Windows 10 Home—totaled $2,816.67. These are 2020 figures, not current 2026 prices.

TechRadar’s tested eight-core i9 configuration used an Asus Dual RTX 2070 8GB Mini, 16GB RAM, a 380GB Optane SSD and a 1TB SSD. TechRadar’s value assessment was that a conventional desktop matching the specification could cost around one-third as much. The practical interpretation is that Ghost Canyon asks buyers to pay a substantial premium for a very small enclosure and modular construction, not for better raw value per dollar.

The two review configurations are not identical, so their parts lists should not be combined into one supposed standard build. They do show that GPU, memory, storage and operating-system choices materially change the finished price. Current resale pricing and availability are not established here; check a live seller listing and confirm exactly which components are included before comparing a used kit with a complete desktop.

GPU fit is the defining constraint

Intel’s limit is a dual-slot graphics card up to 8 inches long. That is enough to support compact discrete GPUs, as shown by the RTX 2070 Mini-class cards in the reviewed configurations, but it rules out many full-length desktop cards. Card thickness, cooler shape, power connectors and manufacturer-specific dimensions still matter, so confirm the particular model—not just its GPU chipset—fits the system.

Compared with an ordinary tower, Ghost Canyon sacrifices graphics-card choice and room for future expansion. A conventional desktop is the more flexible choice if the plan is to install a full-size GPU or change graphics cards repeatedly. Ghost Canyon is better suited to someone whose chosen compact card fits now and who values the small enclosure enough to accept narrower options later.

Who should consider Ghost Canyon?

  • Consider it if a 5-liter footprint, internal discrete graphics and a replaceable Compute Element matter more than getting the lowest price for a given specification.
  • Choose a conventional desktop instead if value, full-size GPU choice or broad expansion room comes first.
  • Approach a used or barebones listing carefully if it does not spell out the included Compute Element, memory, storage, GPU and operating system. Those omissions can turn an attractive-looking kit price into a much more expensive finished build.
  • Compare newer mini PCs on the exact configuration: finished-system price, physical size, graphics capability, upgrade options and support terms. The available evidence does not establish comparable noise, power draw or benchmark results, so those should be checked in reviews of the specific alternatives rather than inferred from the NUC’s size or components.

Age, support and buying checks

Ghost Canyon dates to 2020 and uses ninth-generation Core processors. That age is relevant when evaluating remaining warranty, parts access, firmware and operating-system support, but the available product information does not establish current warranty coverage or present-day support availability. Confirm those terms with the seller or the relevant support provider for the exact unit and region before buying.

For any purchase, identify the precise kit and included components, verify GPU dimensions, and calculate the price of the complete system rather than relying on the barebones price alone. If resale pricing is the deciding factor, compare live listings: historical launch prices cannot tell you whether a particular offer is good in 2026.
