NVIDIA Isaac Teleop turns tracked human motion into robot-facing commands through a graph of typed input sources and robot- or task-specific retargeters. A tracked hand or controller is not simply copied to matching robot joints: the graph can convert it into an end-effector pose, a gripper command, or dexterous-hand joint targets. NVIDIA documents workflows for simulation and real-robot/ROS 2 pipelines, but those descriptions do not establish performance or compatibility for every device and robot combination.

How tracking data becomes robot motion

The documented architecture separates the device that captures motion from the robot-specific logic that interprets it. A source node exposes tracking data; one or more retargeter nodes map that data into a control representation suited to the task or embodiment; the graph combines the outputs for a simulator or robot interface. This lets a system use different tracking inputs and robot mappings without assuming a one-to-one relationship between human joints and robot joints. NVIDIA’s Isaac Teleop overview describes the broader collection framework, and its retargeting reference documents the graph interfaces.

Conceptual flow: headset or controller tracking → source node → task- or robot-specific retargeter → action output → simulator or robot interface. This describes the documented design, not a measured latency or accuracy result.

Which tracking inputs can a graph use?

The retargeting interface lists several source types, allowing the input modality to vary independently of the target robot:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Hand tracking: HandsSource exposes left- and right-hand tracking, with 26 joints per hand.
  • Controllers: ControllersSource provides controller data such as grip pose, trigger, and thumbstick.
  • Head pose and pedals: source interfaces also cover head pose and three-axis pedals.
  • Joint-state devices: generic joint-state sources can represent devices such as leader arms or exoskeletons.
  • Full-body tracking: a full-body pose source is also documented.

For headset-based use, treat the device category as a starting point rather than a compatibility guarantee. NVIDIA’s overview lists XR headsets, and its quick start describes a headset workflow; the exact tracking support and software compatibility still depend on the release, runtime, and robot stack you intend to use. The quick start describes the workflow, while NVIDIA’s Isaac Lab 2.3 release blog names Meta Quest VR as an example.

How does hand or controller tracking become arm motion?

For arm and end-effector control, the documented retargeters offer two different output representations. Choose based on what the downstream controller expects, not on an assumption that one mapping is inherently more accurate.

Retargeter Output Documented controls
Se3AbsRetargeter Absolute pose: position plus quaternion, represented as 7D Can select left or right hand or controller and adjust target offsets.
Se3RelRetargeter Relative 6D change: position delta plus rotation vector Can select left or right hand or controller; exposes position and rotation scale and smoothing parameters.

In practical terms, an absolute pose expresses where the target end effector should be, while a relative output expresses a change from a reference. The documentation describes these interfaces and configuration options; it does not provide accuracy guarantees for a particular robot, calibration, or tracking setup. See the retargeting interface reference.

How are grippers and dexterous hands controlled?

Single-value gripper commands

GripperRetargeter produces one scalar, using the documented convention of -1.0 for closed and 1.0 for open. The input can be a controller trigger or the distance between the thumb and index finger. A downstream robot interface must interpret that output for its gripper; the scalar convention alone does not establish a particular gripper’s range or behavior.

Dexterous robot hands

DexHandRetargeter and DexBiManualRetargeter map tracked 26-joint hand data to robot-specific hand joint angles using the dex-retargeting library. These mappings are embodiment-specific: human hand tracking is the input, but the resulting joint targets depend on the robot hand and its retargeting configuration. NVIDIA’s Isaac Lab 2.3 blog gives release examples involving Unitree G1’s three-finger hand and Inspire’s five-finger hand; it is not a universal compatibility list.

What happens in a teleoperation session?

The session guide describes a manager that creates and configures trackers, establishes an OpenXR session, initializes plugins, runs the retargeting pipeline, and cleans up when the session ends. It uses synchronous stepping by default. An optional pipelined mode can return results from the latest completed frame, which matters when a developer needs to reason about which input frame an output corresponds to. This behavior is a frame-consistency detail, not a published latency measurement. NVIDIA’s Teleop Session guide covers the lifecycle and stepping modes.

Does Isaac Teleop support simulation and real robots?

NVIDIA’s quick start describes a headset workflow that uses CloudXR, an Isaac Teleop retargeting pipeline, and Isaac Lab simulation. In that workflow, live hand or controller data can be processed and gripper commands printed. NVIDIA also states that the framework is not limited to simulation and can drive real robots and ROS 2 pipelines.

That establishes documented workflow scope, not proof that a particular hardware combination has been tested or that it will meet a specific task’s safety, accuracy, or timing requirements. Before deployment, confirm that the source node, retargeter, robot interface, and runtime all match your intended setup.

Which name and package should developers use?

The naming is release-sensitive. The Isaac Lab documentation page is now titled “Isaac Capture” and describes the transition from Isaac Teleop. That page says Isaac Lab documentation pins release 1.4 and therefore retains the isaacteleop distribution and import names; upstream changed those names to isaaccapture in version 1.6. Do not treat the package identifiers as interchangeable without checking the release you are installing. NVIDIA’s Isaac Capture documentation explains the transition.

How to evaluate a setup for your robot

When assessing whether a teleoperation graph fits a project, compare the actual interfaces at each stage rather than relying on the framework name or a demo device:

  • Input modality: tracked hands, controller signals, joint-space devices, or full-body pose.
  • Output representation: absolute pose, relative pose delta, gripper scalar, or robot-hand joint targets.
  • Embodiment and mapping: the target robot and the retargeter configured for its control interface.
  • Deployment path: simulation, a real-robot interface, or a ROS 2 pipeline.
  • Release alignment: the Isaac Teleop/Isaac Capture name and package identifiers appropriate to the software version.

NVIDIA’s release examples show that tracking devices and robot embodiments can differ, but the reviewed documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark or numerical performance comparison. Treat examples as evidence of documented use cases, not as a guarantee for every headset, hand, or robot.
