OBS’s “Encoding overloaded” warning does not, by itself, mean your internet is slow or that you need a new graphics card. First check OBS Stats to distinguish encoding lag from rendering lag and network-dropped frames; then make the fix that matches the failing stage. For a stream that must stay live around the clock, test changes before applying them to the public broadcast.
First identify what is falling behind
While the problem is happening, open View > Stats in OBS and note the separate counters for frames skipped due to encoding lag, frames missed due to rendering lag, and frames dropped due to network. These indicate different problems:
- Encoding lag: OBS is not encoding frames quickly enough. Check the selected encoder and the CPU or hardware encoder’s workload.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot compose and render the scene on time. Check scene complexity and GPU load.
- Network-dropped frames: Frames are not reaching the destination reliably. Investigate upload capacity and network stability rather than changing encoders first.
OBS needs GPU time to composite and render scenes, so a GPU bottleneck can cause trouble even when the encoder is not the only workload. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide explains this distinction and recommends addressing system bottlenecks.
After the session, use Help > Log Files > View Current Log or upload the relevant log through OBS’s log-file tools. A useful diagnosis also needs your operating system, OBS version, CPU and GPU, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene sources and filters, destination, and the Stats values. Without those details, no single root cause or guaranteed fix can be identified.

Reduce scene and rendering load
If Stats show rendering lag, start with what OBS must draw. Remove unnecessary sources and costly filters, simplify the scene collection, and avoid making OBS render or scale more detail than the stream output needs. Check GPU use by other programs and close only applications you recognize and do not need during the stream.
On Windows, try launching OBS as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS; it is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed solution. Change one thing at a time, then observe Stats during a representative test.

Choose cartoon frame rate and scaling deliberately
First determine whether the cartoon is a pre-rendered video loop, an animated scene, or a composition with live elements. A mostly static cartoon may not need a high frame rate, but lowering frame rate or resolution changes the output and is not a universal overload fix. Test the proposed output privately or in a controlled stream before changing a continuous public broadcast.
Change encoders only when the evidence points to encoding
If encoding lag is accumulating and the CPU is the constrained component while using x264, compare it with a hardware encoder supported by your existing system and OBS. Hardware encoding can move video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; quality at a given bitrate can differ by encoder generation. OBS describes hardware encoders as a way to take workload off the CPU, but this does not mean they are always the right answer for every bottleneck (OBS Project, Hardware Encoding).

Do not assume a hardware encoder will fix rendering lag: the GPU may already be overloaded composing the scene. Compare options against the actual constraint, compatibility, quality at the intended bitrate, and stability over a long test. Consider a GPU with an OBS-supported hardware encoder only if logs show CPU-based encoding is the problem and your computer can support the upgrade. Compatibility, power, cooling, case fit, and cost depend on the existing system; the warning alone does not justify buying a GPU.
For YouTube Live, check output settings and network separately
Encoder capacity and YouTube’s ingest recommendations are separate questions. If the destination is YouTube Live, match the codec, resolution, and frame rate to YouTube’s live encoder settings. Its published recommendations include these H.264 figures:

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a measurement of your available upload speed, and they apply to H.264. YouTube’s table also includes AV1 and H.265 guidance; use the row for the codec actually configured rather than treating the H.264 numbers as universal.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported by your encoder and configuration.
- Test with movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health.
For network capacity, measure upload, not download. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams, and notes that other users or devices on a shared network can reduce available capacity (YouTube live encoder settings; YouTube network guidance). Repeat measurements at times representative of normal use: one speed test cannot establish sustained 24/7 stability.

Plan the 24/7 operation, not just the encoder settings
YouTube’s preparation guidance recommends setting up in advance, previewing in Live Control Room, testing failover, confirming playback on the channel or watch page and on mobile, and monitoring audio and video continuously (YouTube live-stream preparation guidance). For the failover test, follow YouTube’s procedure, such as stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, and verify what viewers see before relying on the workflow.
These steps help expose operational problems; they do not promise automatic recovery or establish that this particular setup needs a UPS, spare PC, or paid monitoring service. If you keep a local recording as part of your workflow, check that the archive file is being written and is playable.
Kids’ content settings depend on the channel’s audience designation
If this is a YouTube stream designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, and personalized ads are disabled on live streams, although contextual ads may still appear. The content owner must determine the correct audience designation; the fact that a stream is a cartoon for children is not enough to assess how the channel has classified it.
