Independent Living Systems (ILS) reported that an unauthorized actor accessed certain systems from June 30 through July 5, 2022. The principal reported affected count is 4,226,508 people. Information at issue included personal identifiers and health-related data, including Social Security numbers and health-insurance information; the notice does not establish that every affected person had every listed data type exposed.

What happened in the ILS data breach?

ILS said an unauthorized actor obtained access to certain company systems between June 30 and July 5, 2022. On July 5, ILS discovered that certain systems were inaccessible, brought in outside cybersecurity specialists, and began reviewing data. In its 2023 data-event notice, the company said some information stored on the network was acquired, while other information was accessible and potentially viewed.

That distinction matters: the notice describes both confirmed acquisition of some information and possible viewing of other information. It does not say that every record was taken or viewed.

How many people were affected?

The principal reported figure is 4,226,508 individuals, in ILS’s 2023 notice and reporting cycle. State filings can show a smaller figure because they may count only residents of that state or relate to a separate submission. For example, a Maine Attorney General filing lists 19,419 affected Maine residents. That state-level number is not a replacement for the principal incident count.

What information may have been exposed?

Reporting on the incident and a consolidated complaint describe potentially involved information such as names, Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, medical information, and health-insurance information. The complaint’s descriptions are allegations, not a court finding that each listed data type was acquired for every person.

Could your Social Security number have been involved? Yes, it was among the categories described in incident reporting and the complaint. But the general incident descriptions do not establish which specific data fields were involved for any one person. Check the notice sent to you for the information ILS associated with your record; do not infer your exposure solely from the overall list.

What did ILS do after discovering the incident?

ILS said it fortified its firewall, used forensic specialists to monitor and remediate suspicious activity, rotated and strengthened user credentials, and enhanced training and notification processes. An individual notice stated that ILS had no evidence or other indication that identity theft or fraud had occurred as a result of the incident. That statement describes what ILS reported; it is not a guarantee that no affected person faced misuse.

The Maine filing says two years of TransUnion/Cyberscout Identity Force monitoring were offered in that filing. This is a state-specific filing detail, not proof that every person connected to the incident received the same offer. Follow the instructions in your own notice to determine whether a monitoring service was offered to you and how to enroll.

Is the ILS settlement real, and what is its status?

A court-authorized settlement website reports that final approval was granted. In an update dated February 11, 2026, the administrator said claims were still being processed and payment distribution had not been finalized. That update does not establish the status of processing or payments after that date, so check the administrator’s official site for the latest information before relying on a deadline or payment estimate.

How do you check an ILS settlement claim?

  1. Find your notice. Use the notice you received to identify the settlement and the administrator. Do not assume that all ILS-related notices have identical eligibility rules or instructions.
  2. Go to the official administrator site. Navigate to the court-authorized settlement website using the address printed on your notice or another official court or administrator communication. Confirm that the site identifies the ILS matter before entering personal information.
  3. Review current requirements. Check the site for eligibility, claim status, deadlines, and any documents or information required. The available update does not provide a deadline or guarantee eligibility, so do not rely on dates repeated by third-party pages.
  4. Keep your records. Save a copy of any claim submission and confirmation, and use the administrator’s published contact details if you need help resolving a claim question.

Be cautious with unsolicited messages that ask for payment, passwords, or sensitive information to release a settlement benefit. Verify requests directly through the official administrator rather than using an unexpected message’s link or phone number.
