Incremental sheet forming (ISF) uses a CNC-controlled tool to shape a clamped sheet a little at a time, following a path derived from a CAD model. Because it can form parts without a dedicated die for each design, it is especially useful for prototypes, customized parts, and small batches. A CNC mill may be usable, but suitability depends on the machine, fixture, tool, material, and part—not simply on whether the machine can move a cutter along a programmed path.
How incremental sheet forming works
In ISF, a forming tool presses locally against a sheet held in a fixture. The tool follows a planned path and progressively deforms the material until it approaches the desired shape. A common version, single-point incremental forming (SPIF), uses one forming tool to contact the sheet. Toolpaths can be created from CAD models and run on CNC equipment, as described by the University of Sheffield.
The sheet must be restrained and supported while the tool moves. The exact fixture and setup depend on the part, material, machine envelope, stiffness, and control configuration; there is no single machine specification that applies to every ISF job.
Can you use a CNC mill?
A CNC machine can carry out the programmed tool motion, but a conventional milling setup is not automatically suitable for forming. ISF applies sustained forming forces to a sheet and depends on secure workholding, a suitable forming tool, and enough machine capacity and clearance for the part and toolpath. Before using a mill, verify that its work envelope, stiffness, control configuration, tool holder, and fixture suit the intended material and geometry.

Use a forming tool with a rounded or hemispherical contact end rather than assuming an ordinary milling cutter is appropriate. Tool geometry and diameter need to suit the stock and part. The available sources do not establish a universal machine configuration or beginner-ready set of CNC settings.
Why choose ISF instead of die-based forming?
ISF avoids the need to make a dedicated hard die for every geometry. That can reduce tooling investment and development delay when producing prototypes, customized products, or small batches. The University of Sheffield identifies these applications as a particular fit for the process.
This flexibility does not establish that ISF is faster or less expensive for high-volume production. A practical comparison should consider the quantity, geometry-specific tooling, toolpath duration, setup effort, material behavior, required accuracy, and finishing needs. The cited sources do not give a general break-even quantity or cycle-time figure.

Choose the tool, material, and parameters together
Tool shape and size
A rounded or hemispherical-ended forming tool is the basic tool category. A 2015 design review discusses spherical tools of 12.7 mm or larger, or a large flat-ended tool, for thicker sheets. It also reports that flat-ended tools offered a favorable formability and roughness combination in its review and specifically recommends them for aluminum, galvanized steel, and stainless steel. These are review-level design pointers, not guaranteed choices for every alloy, thickness, machine, or geometry (Jeswiet et al., 2015).

Stock and process settings
Sheet thickness, tool diameter and shape, vertical step-down, feed rate, spindle speed, and tool rotation direction can affect formability, and their effects can interact. A 2017 systematic quantitative review by Australian National University researchers evaluated experiments reported in 35 papers. It found useful operating ranges for parameters and noted that parameter interactions had received comparatively little attention (McAnulty, Jeswiet, and Doolan, 2017).
Do not treat a feed rate, spindle speed, or step-down from another setup as a universal recipe. Select and validate parameters for the actual machine, tool, sheet, and geometry. The 2015 review also reports that formability tends to decrease as initial sheet thickness increases.

Material behavior
Conventional ISF is generally performed at room temperature. That can limit materials with poor ductility at room temperature, according to the University of Sheffield. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal ranking of suitable materials, so material choice must be evaluated for the specific process and part.
ISF has also been studied with polymers. A 2022 ASME study overview describes trials involving PVC, polypropylene, and polycarbonate, identifying friction, thinning, fracture, tool material, and tool rotation as factors relevant to surface condition and formability (ASME, 2022).
Plan for springback, accuracy, and surface quality
Springback and geometric inaccuracy remain engineering challenges in ISF. Toolpath compensation is an active way to address shape error, but published results apply only to the tested conditions.

In a 2026 peer-reviewed study, Asghar, He, Hu, and Duan tested a feedforward compensation method using 0.3 mm Al-1050-O sheets and three geometries, one of them non-convex. They reported average final-shape RMSE reductions of 43.8% against an uncompensated toolpath and 44.5% against the ILC-SSF comparison method in those tests. Those figures are not predictions for other materials, machines, geometries, or operating conditions (Asghar et al., 2026).
For a real part, assess dimensional error, springback, and surface finish against the part’s requirements. Tool selection and process settings can affect surface quality, and additional compensation or finishing may be needed.
Quick Recap
A practical setup decision checklist
- Define the part and quantity: ISF is particularly suited to prototypes, customized parts, and small batches where avoiding a dedicated die matters.
- Check the machine and fixture: Confirm machine envelope, stiffness, controls, tool-holder compatibility, sheet restraint, and clearance for the complete toolpath.
- Match tool and stock: Choose a forming-tool shape and diameter for the sheet thickness, material, and geometry; do not assume a standard milling cutter is suitable.
- Validate process parameters: Establish step-down, feed, spindle speed, and rotation for the particular setup rather than borrowing universal values.
- Inspect the result: Check formability, thinning or fracture, geometry error, springback, and surface condition against the intended use.
