IMG.LY CE.SDK and Orshot Embed solve the same broad problem—putting design editing inside your product—but they make fundamentally different deployment trade-offs. CE.SDK is an SDK your team installs and operates in its own application and infrastructure. Orshot Embed is a hosted web editor that Orshot exposes through an iframe or React/Vue integration. Choose CE.SDK when deployment control, native platforms, headless workflows, or deep customization are central. Choose Orshot when a hosted web editor, JWT-based tenant isolation, and packaged web workflows reduce the engineering you need to own.

The comparison below reflects vendor documentation, not an independent implementation or benchmark. Validate storage, export behavior, latency, security terms, and pricing for your application before signing a contract.

CE.SDK and Orshot Embed differ first in delivery model

Decision area IMG.LY CE.SDK Orshot Embed
Delivery Installed SDK running in your application; IMG.LY describes browser editing on customer infrastructure. Hosted editor integrated through an iframe or React/Vue SDK.
Documented platforms Web, iOS, Android, desktop, and Node.js server-side use are listed by IMG.LY. The reviewed Embed page documents web integration through iframe, React, and Vue.
Operational ownership Your team integrates assets, save/export flows, hosting, and product UI. Orshot operates the hosted editor while you configure its documented controls and integration.
Data model IMG.LY describes client-side processing and customer-controlled architecture; confirm the exact storage design for your implementation. Orshot describes hosted, JWT-authenticated sessions with user-separated templates and data.
Public pricing Quote-based licensing by platforms, components, and AI features; a full-feature trial is available for 30 days. Starts at $39/month; multi-tenancy, webhooks, and no branding are stated as starting at $160/month.

These descriptions are not equivalent hosting or data-flow guarantees. Ask both vendors about retention, regions, subprocessors, backups, and contractual controls.

What IMG.LY CE.SDK provides

An SDK inside your product

IMG.LY presents CE.SDK as an embeddable editor that can run in your application rather than as a remote editor page. Its product page describes both a complete UI and headless use, allowing a team to use the supplied interface or build its own editing experience around the SDK.

Broad platform coverage

IMG.LY’s pricing page lists web, iOS, Android, desktop, and Node.js server-side support. That breadth matters if the same editing model must work in a browser, native mobile apps, desktop software, or server-side rendering jobs. Platform licensing is separate, so obtain a quote that names every target.

Customization and extensibility

IMG.LY says the UI can be themed and configured, supports custom asset sources, and can be extended with plugins. This is a fit for products that need their own asset libraries, controls, workflows, or brand system rather than a fixed hosted studio.

Licensing behavior to plan for

IMG.LY states that each license includes a full-feature trial after you obtain a trial key; its support page says the key is valid for 30 days from creation. Paid keys remain valid while the subscription is active and check configured web hostnames or mobile bundle IDs. Exports without a valid key carry a watermark, according to the licensing support documentation. Test key handling in staging and production-like domains before launch.

What Orshot Embed provides

A hosted Studio editor

Orshot describes Embed as a hosted editor integrated through an iframe or React/Vue component. The vendor owns the editor service, while your application supplies the surrounding product experience and authentication flow.

Tenant-aware web integration

The Embed page documents JWT authentication, domain locking, webhooks, and user-specific separation of templates and data. Those features can shorten the path to a multi-customer SaaS workflow, but confirm token claims, webhook retries, signing, retention, and tenant deletion procedures in current documentation and your contract.

Controls versus source-level ownership

A hosted component can package editor behavior, saves, and service operations that you would otherwise implement. The trade-off is that customization is limited to the controls Orshot exposes. Verify whether your required panels, asset providers, keyboard behavior, export formats, and accessibility hooks are configurable before committing.

Editing scope and extensibility

Both vendors describe image/design editing and video-related capability, but they emphasize different ways of delivering it. IMG.LY emphasizes plugins, custom asset sources, full-UI configuration, and headless operation. Orshot emphasizes a ready Studio editor, hosted tenancy, and webhook-driven workflows.

Questions to test with a real project

  • Can users open, save, duplicate, and version a document using your existing IDs?
  • Can your asset service provide uploads, thumbnails, permissions, and deletion callbacks?
  • Do required exports preserve fonts, transparency, animation, and page dimensions?
  • Can you add your own controls without forking or replacing the editor?
  • Can jobs run asynchronously and report failures in a way your product can recover?

Do not infer exact format support or feature parity from marketing labels. Build a representative template and test the complete edit-to-export path.

Hosted iframe or installed SDK: engineering trade-offs

Choose the installed model when ownership is a requirement

  • Your product must support native iOS, Android, desktop, or Node.js workflows.
  • Data processing and storage must remain within infrastructure you control.
  • You need headless rendering, custom plugins, or a deeply branded editor surface.
  • Your team can own browser compatibility, asset pipelines, save flows, observability, and upgrades.

Choose the hosted model when delivery speed is the constraint

  • Your product is web-first and an iframe or React/Vue component fits the UI.
  • You want JWT sessions, domain restrictions, tenant separation, and webhooks described by the vendor.
  • You prefer a monthly service to operating editor infrastructure and release upgrades.
  • The documented customization points cover your required controls.

These are selection heuristics, not claims that either product has been tested in your application.

Pricing: compare the complete commercial model

Product Published figure What it means
IMG.LY CE.SDK Quote required Pricing is based on platforms, components, and AI features licensed. IMG.LY lists a 30-day full-feature trial.
Orshot Embed From $39/month Starting price shown on the Embed page; verify included limits and features.
Orshot advanced Embed features From $160/month Orshot says multi-tenancy, webhooks, and no branding start at this level; confirm current plan details.

These are not normalized totals. Request a CE.SDK quote for every platform and component, and ask Orshot how price changes with tenants, editors, exports, storage, environments, support, and webhook volume. Compare annual increases, overages, renewal terms, and support response commitments—not only the entry price.

Performance evidence: useful context, not a benchmark

Orshot reports three cold Chrome loads on September 22, 2026, comparing its editor with the public IMG.LY CE.SDK 1.82.1 demo. It reports 3.9 seconds versus 5.1 seconds, 2.6 MB versus 9.8 MB downloaded, and 0 MB versus 6.2 MB of WASM. These are Orshot’s own demo measurements, not an independent benchmark or a prediction of production performance. Network location, caching, templates, device, browser version, and application code can change the result.

Measure your own representative template on target devices. Record first load and repeat load, editor readiness, export completion, memory use, failed requests, and behavior on slow networks. No independent performance benchmark was identified in the reviewed sources.

Data, security, and reliability due diligence

Questions for IMG.LY

  • Which operations are client-side, and which optional services transmit documents or assets?
  • How do you isolate customer data when using your own storage and asset providers?
  • How are license keys protected, rotated, and restricted to production hosts?
  • What support and upgrade policy applies to each licensed platform?

Questions for Orshot

  • Where are hosted documents, uploads, logs, and backups stored, and how long are they retained?
  • Which JWT claims are required, how are tokens revoked, and how are webhooks authenticated and retried?
  • How does domain locking behave across local, staging, and production domains?
  • What deletion, export, residency, and subprocessor commitments are contractual?

Have security review both answers; vendor feature pages do not settle your regulatory or residency requirements.

A practical evaluation plan

  1. Define the workload. List platforms, concurrent editors, document sizes, asset types, exports, offline requirements, and tenant boundaries.
  2. Build one vertical slice. Implement authentication, asset upload, editing, save, export, deletion, and error reporting with one realistic template.
  3. Test failure paths. Disconnect the network, expire credentials, submit oversized assets, interrupt exports, and replay webhook events.
  4. Measure target devices. Test cold and warm loads, editor readiness, memory, export latency, and accessibility in the browsers and phones your customers use.
  5. Review operations. Confirm monitoring, incident communication, backups, data deletion, and upgrade procedures.
  6. Obtain comparable quotes. Give both vendors the same user, tenant, platform, render, support, and environment assumptions.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate need is generating screenshots of product pages, templates, or documentation—not embedding a full design editor—ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It provides a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

For a quick capture, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

It also supports full-page and selector captures, dark mode, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common implementation problems

Exports are watermarked in CE.SDK

IMG.LY’s licensing support says exports without a valid key carry a watermark. Check that the key is present, active, and configured for the exact web hostname or mobile bundle ID used by the build.

The Orshot editor will not load

Check the JWT, allowed domain, iframe policy, and browser console. Test staging and production origins separately; domain locking can reject an origin that was not registered.

Saved documents appear under the wrong user

Trace the subject and tenant claims from token creation through save and webhook handling. Confirm that your backend never reuses a token or document identifier across tenants.

Performance is worse than a vendor demo

Compare the same template, browser, network, and cold-cache conditions. Large fonts, images, plugins, third-party requests, and your surrounding application can dominate load time.

Webhooks create duplicate records

Persist an event ID or equivalent idempotency key before applying side effects, and implement retries as safe replays. Confirm Orshot’s delivery and signing details in the current plan documentation.

Verdict

Shortlist IMG.LY CE.SDK for a multi-platform product that needs infrastructure and data-architecture control, headless operation, or extensive customization. Shortlist Orshot Embed for a web-first SaaS where a hosted iframe or React/Vue editor, JWT sessions, tenant separation, and webhooks match the workflow. The right choice is the one that passes your vertical-slice, security, performance, and commercial tests—not the one with the lower headline price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use CE.SDK and Orshot Embed in the same product?

Possibly, but the reviewed materials do not define a combined integration. Treat them as separate editor architectures and validate document formats, authentication, and ownership before planning interoperability.

Is Orshot Embed an offline editor?

The reviewed Embed description presents a hosted web editor. It does not establish offline editing, so require an explicit vendor answer for offline requirements.

Does CE.SDK automatically provide multi-tenant backend storage?

No such guarantee is established here. CE.SDK is an SDK integrated into your application; you must design storage, permissions, and tenant isolation or confirm optional services in a quote.
