Use PNG for a static stream overlay that needs transparent areas, WEBM for an animated transparent overlay when your streaming software supports it, and JPEG for many photo backgrounds that do not need transparency. The right choice depends on what the image contains and how the streaming application handles it—not on the live video’s encoding format.
Choose a format for the image you are adding

When transparency matters
A transparent region lets the scene beneath an overlay show through. PNG supports an alpha channel, so it is a reliable starting point for static overlays that need this effect. JPEG has no alpha channel and cannot retain see-through regions; a transparent JPEG export will instead have a solid background.
WebP can also carry transparency, according to the IETF’s RFC 9649, but format capability alone does not guarantee that a particular streaming application will import it correctly. If you are choosing an animated transparent overlay, Elgato’s OBS overlay guide recommends WEBM for its described use case. Test the actual file in the application before relying on it live.
Match compression to the image content
Use lossy compression for photographs when practical
Photographs contain gradual changes in color and texture, which often tolerate lossy compression. JPEG can reduce file size, but discarded detail cannot be recovered by importing the image into streaming software.

Favor lossless graphics for text and crisp edges
Text, thin lines, logos, diagrams, and screenshots make compression artifacts conspicuous. PNG is a widely supported lossless option for these assets. If a logo appears fuzzy or has colored halos, use a cleaner lossless source rather than enlarging a compressed image.
Keep the image format separate from live-video settings
Your overlay or background is a scene asset. It is not the codec or container that encodes and sends the live audiovisual program. Choose image formats for still-image quality, transparency, animation, and software compatibility; configure the live stream’s video resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and delivery protocol separately. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance concerns the video stream, not which format to use for an overlay.

Set dimensions and fit without distortion
Format does not determine how an asset fits the scene. Preserve the image’s proportions when scaling, and decide whether to crop, scale, or leave space around it rather than stretching it to fill a mismatched canvas. OBS recommends producing content at a 16:9 resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720 for best results, and notes that stretching mismatched content can warp and distort it. Its scene and source overview discusses how sources are arranged and transformed. OBS also cites 3840×2160 as a 16:9 example in its aspect-ratio guidance dated 2021-11-27.
- Keep a 16:9 source proportional when placing it on a 16:9 canvas.
- For a different canvas ratio, choose whether the image should be cropped, scaled with unused space, or used as a background that fills the scene.
- Check small text and fine edges at the size viewers will see; a large source image can still look poor if it is compressed or scaled badly.
Check the destination’s specific requirements
Format support can vary by platform feature as well as by streaming application. Twitch’s extension discovery-image guidance says, “Avoid transparency in your PNG.” That instruction applies to a discovery image for a Twitch extension; it does not mean transparent PNG overlays are unsuitable in general. The relevant Twitch extension documentation should be checked for the particular asset you are preparing.

Do not generalize file-size limits or accepted formats from one feature to another. For example, a channel-page image, an extension discovery image, and an OBS scene overlay can have different rules. Check the current instructions for the precise upload field and the software version you will use.
Quick checks before going live
- Does the asset need see-through areas? Avoid JPEG; use PNG for a static overlay, or a supported animated format for motion.
- Is it mostly a photograph? JPEG is often suitable if transparency and lossless preservation are not needed.
- Does it contain small text, fine lines, or a logo? Prefer PNG or another lossless format.
- Is it animated? Confirm the streaming application supports the format and preserves transparency during playback.
- Does it fit the canvas? Preserve proportions and check the result in the scene rather than stretching it by default.
- Is the asset for a platform-specific upload field? Follow that field’s current requirements, not a rule intended for another feature.
