Illumio announced a $100 million Series C on April 14, 2015, to expand its Adaptive Security Platform and accelerate product development, sales, and international growth. The round brought the company’s reported funding to more than $142 million over the preceding 27 months. Its pitch was to secure applications and workloads inside data centers and clouds—not just defend the network perimeter.

Who invested in Illumio’s $100 million round?

New investors BlackRock Funds and Accel Partners joined existing backers Formation 8, Andreessen Horowitz, and General Catalyst. The round also included individual investors Microsoft chairman John W. Thompson, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang. Illumio said the financing would support demand for its platform, research and development, sales and marketing expansion, and international growth. Illumio’s April 14, 2015 announcement described the total raised as more than $142 million over 27 months.

What did Illumio mean by securing a dynamic data center?

Traditional perimeter defenses focus on traffic entering or leaving a network. Illumio’s approach focused on communications among applications and workloads within data centers and cloud environments. The company described its Adaptive Security Platform (ASP) as a way to visualize application traffic and apply policy continuously as infrastructure changes.

That distinction mattered in environments where workloads could run across different infrastructure rather than in one fixed network location. Instead of relying only on static perimeter rules, Illumio presented its system as using context and relationships between workloads to automate security policy. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous account described the approach as a move from static security toward a dynamic, context-based model.

What did the Adaptive Security Platform cover?

Illumio said ASP could visualize traffic and deliver policy and enforcement across a range of computing environments, including bare-metal servers, virtual machines, containers, and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), in data centers and public clouds. Contemporary coverage also reported integration with NGINX and F5 load balancers for dynamic policy enforcement. TechCrunch’s report discussed those integrations, while Fortune reported that Illumio worked across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and traditional data centers.

How Illumio’s approach differed from perimeter-only security

Dimension Perimeter-focused approach Illumio’s 2015 description of ASP
Coverage focus Traffic entering or leaving the network boundary Application and workload communications within data centers and clouds
Policy behavior Typically framed as static rules Context- and relationship-informed policy that Illumio described as dynamic and continuously enforced
Environments Network perimeter Bare-metal servers, VMs, containers, VDI, data centers, and public clouds
Reported ecosystem integrations Not stated in the cited 2015 coverage NGINX and F5 load balancers

This comparison captures how Illumio positioned its platform in 2015; it is not evidence that perimeter controls were obsolete or that ASP alone could replace an organization’s broader security architecture.

What did Illumio say about the security gap?

Illumio CEO and co-founder Andrew Rubin said perimeter solutions left “80 percent of the data center and cloud exposed and vulnerable.” That figure was the company’s characterization of the problem in its 2015 funding announcement, not an independently validated statistic in the cited reporting. Rubin also said the financing would let Illumio expand more aggressively and extend its platform across more data center and computing elements.
