Its team used a hair dryer on low heat and a clamp to open a bud, but the teardown does not establish a safe, easy, or Apple-supported home repair. The charging case is a different story: iFixit says reaching its battery destroyed the case.
What iFixit’s hair-dryer test actually showed
iFixit reports that its team opened an AirPods 5 earbud with a hair dryer set to low heat and a clamp, then carefully pried the shell apart. An earlier attempt melted plastic, and the successful attempt still required careful heat control and patience. The teardown demonstrates that those tools can help the team gain access; it is not a validated consumer repair procedure or a guarantee that an earbud can be opened without damage.

Can you replace an AirPods 5 earbud battery?
At the component level, the battery is removable: iFixit found pronged connectors rather than a battery permanently soldered in place. But getting to it means opening a glued earbud, which is the difficult and potentially damaging part. iFixit said replacement batteries were not yet available when it published the teardown, so its findings do not establish that a suitable replacement part can currently be purchased.

The left and right batteries are physically different and have reversed polarity, according to iFixit. They are not interchangeable. A replacement would need to match the correct side; the teardown does not provide a basis for treating the two batteries as a universal part.
Why the charging case is still the repairability bottleneck
The charging case remains much harder to repair than the earbuds. iFixit reports that internal plastic welds impede disassembly and that accessing the case battery destroyed the case. The removable earbud batteries therefore do not mean the full AirPods 5 system is straightforward to repair: the component most likely to require its own battery service still presents a destructive disassembly problem.

What the 2/10 repairability score means
iFixit awarded AirPods 5 a repairability score of 2/10 in its September 29, 2026 teardown, its highest AirPods score to that point. That is a repairability assessment, not a battery-life measurement, repair-success rate, or promise that a repair will work. The score reflects a limited improvement: the earbud battery can be disconnected once the glued shell is opened, while the case battery remains difficult to access.
For comparison, a useful assessment of another earbud should look separately at whether its bud battery is removable, whether opening the shell risks damage, whether the case battery is accessible, whether parts and instructions are available, and whether the manufacturer offers service. iFixit points to Fairphone Fairbuds as an example of a design prioritizing battery replacement in both earbuds and case, but detailed current model comparisons are not established here.

Apple’s service option
Apple’s AirPods service and repair page describes service options and says Apple will replace a battery for no extra charge if its capacity falls below 80%. That is a service-policy threshold, not a result from an AirPods 5 battery-life test. Check Apple’s live support page for the terms, eligibility, and pricing that apply in your region.
