There is no universally best choice among IDBI Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), and Bank of Baroda. SBI is the natural starting point for a scale-first, core-holding investor. Bank of Baroda currently has the clearest directly disclosed FY26 combination of growth, profitability and improving asset quality. IDBI Bank is a higher-uncertainty, event-driven or re-rating idea until its latest comparable ratios and strategic developments are verified in its own filings. The right decision depends on valuation, holding period, tolerance for drawdowns and the durability of each bank’s returns—not on one quarter’s headline profit.

The figures below are based on disclosures available through October 19, 2026. Share prices, price-to-book ratios, ownership details and new results can change quickly, so verify the latest filing and market price before acting. This is an educational comparison, not personalised investment advice.

Quick answer: which bank stock is right for you?

Investor priority Most logical starting point Why Main condition
Scale, diversification and a core public-sector-bank holding SBI Its broad franchise makes it the benchmark against which the other two should be tested. Buy only at a valuation that leaves room for normalisation or continued returns; scale alone does not guarantee upside.
Documented operating momentum and improving asset quality Bank of Baroda FY26 disclosures show 16.2% global-advances growth, 17.9% organic retail-advances growth, INR 20,021 crore net profit, and lower GNPA and NNPA. Confirm that the market price does not already discount this improvement and that credit costs remain controlled.
Higher-risk special situation or re-rating IDBI Bank The potential payoff comes from durable balance-sheet repair, faster growth or a strategic development. Use the latest annual report and quarterly presentation to verify asset quality, capital, profitability and ownership developments before taking a position.

That is a suitability ranking, not a buy ranking. A cheaper or faster-growing bank can still be the worse investment if its earnings are less durable or the share price already assumes a successful turnaround.

What should be compared before choosing a bank?

Bank stocks are not ordinary manufacturing companies. A bank can report rising profit while quietly taking more credit risk, paying more for deposits or consuming capital to achieve growth. Compare the three names on seven connected questions:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter | 4Pack Type C Female to A Male Cable Converter for Apple Duo 17 16 15 14 Plus,iWatch Watch 12 11 10,iPad 9 8 Air,Airpods 5 4
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Franchise and diversification: How broad are the customer, geographic, product and sector exposures? A diversified franchise can reduce dependence on one borrower group or business line.
  2. Growth mix: Is loan growth coming from retail, agriculture, MSME, corporate or overseas books? Growth quality matters more than the percentage alone.
  3. Earnings quality: Examine net interest income (NII), net interest margin (NIM), operating profit, return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), fee income and one-off gains.
  4. Asset quality: Track gross non-performing assets (GNPA), net non-performing assets (NNPA), fresh slippages, credit cost, restructuring and the provision coverage ratio (PCR).
  5. Funding and capital: Deposit growth, the low-cost current-account and savings mix, capital adequacy and the ability to raise capital determine how safely a bank can expand.
  6. Valuation: Price-to-book (P/B) should be judged against sustainable ROE, growth and balance-sheet risk, not against another bank’s multiple in isolation.
  7. Ownership and event risk: Public-sector ownership brings policy and governance considerations, while a strategic transaction can materially change an investment thesis.

Bank of Baroda: the strongest currently evidenced operating profile

Bank of Baroda’s official FY26 analyst presentation and results release provide the most complete current set of comparable operating and asset-quality figures in the material available for this comparison.

FY26 scale and growth

Measure Bank of Baroda disclosure Period or date
Net profit INR 20,021 crore FY26
Global deposits INR 16,48,487 crore March 31, 2026
Global advances INR 14,29,879 crore March 31, 2026
Total business INR 30,78,366 crore March 31, 2026
Global-advances growth 16.2% year over year FY26
Organic retail-advances growth 17.9% FY26

The mix of overall and organic retail growth is important. A 16.2% increase in global advances indicates expansion across the consolidated book, while 17.9% organic retail growth shows that the bank was not relying only on a single large corporate transaction to produce momentum. It does not, by itself, prove that every segment has equal risk; sector-level slippages and underwriting standards still need checking in the latest presentation.

Asset quality and loss absorption

Measure Q4FY26 Comparison or FY26 figure
GNPA 1.89% 2.26% in Q4FY25
NNPA 0.45% 0.58% in Q4FY25
Provision coverage ratio, including technical write-offs 93.94% Q4FY26
Slippage ratio Not stated in the same quarter format 0.72% for FY26
Credit cost Not stated in the same quarter format 0.46% for FY26

The bank’s FY26 results release says its quarterly net profit reached INR 5,616 crore, an 11.2% year-over-year increase. More important than the record quarter is the simultaneous decline in GNPA and NNPA and the high reported provision coverage. A lower NNPA means less exposure remains after provisions, while PCR indicates how much of the identified bad-loan book has already been provided for. Neither measure eliminates future losses: recoveries, write-offs, restructured accounts and new slippages must be monitored each quarter.

What could invalidate the Bank of Baroda thesis?

  • Loan growth may slow or become concentrated in riskier segments.
  • Fresh slippages or credit cost may rise after the FY26 improvement.
  • Deposit costs may increase faster than lending yields, pressuring NIM and NII.
  • A high share price-to-book multiple could leave little return even if operations remain good.
  • Public-sector policy decisions or governance changes can affect capital allocation and management priorities.

Therefore, Bank of Baroda is the best-supported operating-momentum candidate in this comparison, not an automatic buy.

SBI: the scale-and-franchise benchmark

SBI fits an investor who wants breadth, diversification and a core public-sector-bank exposure rather than a narrowly defined turnaround. Its scale makes it the reference point: the alternatives should be able to justify a higher expected return, a lower valuation or a clearly differentiated catalyst before replacing it in a diversified portfolio.

Use current SBI filings, not stale summaries

SBI’s investor-relations site lists the annual report for 2025–26 and a Q1FY27 press release. Those documents establish the current disclosure trail that should be used for deposits, advances, GNPA, NNPA, capital adequacy, ROA, ROE, NIM, operating profit and valuation inputs. The accessible material for this article does not provide those numerical SBI figures, so they are deliberately not filled in from secondary summaries.

SBI can be the sensible core holding even when another bank posts a higher near-term growth rate. A large, diversified institution may offer a different risk profile from a smaller re-rating idea. The trade-off is that a mature franchise may require patience, and paying too much for quality can reduce future returns.

IDBI Bank: a special-situation thesis, not a default core holding

IDBI Bank should be analysed as a distinct event-driven or re-rating case. The question is not simply whether its latest profit rose. It is whether balance-sheet repair is durable, growth can accelerate without weakening underwriting, and strategic or ownership developments create value rather than uncertainty.

Four tests for IDBI Bank

  1. Durability of repair: Check the latest GNPA, NNPA, slippage ratio, credit cost, restructured loans and PCR. A single low NPA reading is insufficient if fresh slippages are rising.
  2. Quality of growth: Separate organic loan growth from recoveries, portfolio sales or unusually low comparatives. Review retail, agriculture, MSME and corporate contributions.
  3. Profit conversion: Test whether NII, operating profit, ROA and ROE are improving without relying on treasury gains or other one-off income.
  4. Strategic and ownership risk: Read the latest annual report, FY26 report and Q4FY26 analyst presentation for changes that could affect governance, capital, management incentives or the potential strategic outcome.

The official investor page lists those FY25–26 reports and presentations, but the accessible page does not expose comparable current ratios in text. Precise IDBI rankings should therefore wait until the underlying filings have been opened and checked. A secondary October 2026 market-news compilation mentions total business of about INR 6.27 lakh crore and deposits of about INR 3.56 lakh crore; treat those numbers as leads until matched to IDBI Bank’s own filing.

How to value the three bank stocks

Price-to-book is commonly used for banks because book value represents the capital supporting their lending assets. It is useful only when paired with sustainable ROE and asset-quality risk.

A practical P/B framework

  1. Take the current share price and divide it by the latest reported book value per share. Use the same reporting date for all three banks.
  2. Compare the resulting P/B with sustainable, through-cycle ROE—not a one-quarter annualised number.
  3. Adjust for asset quality. A bank with high PCR and falling slippages may deserve a different multiple from one whose improvement is unproven.
  4. Check capital adequacy and expected dilution. Future capital raising can reduce per-share compounding even when total profit rises.
  5. Run a downside case in which credit cost returns to a stressed level and loan growth slows. If the thesis fails under modest stress, the margin of safety may be inadequate.

Do not rank the banks by the lowest P/B alone. A low multiple can signal weak returns, uncertain governance or balance-sheet problems; a high multiple can be justified by durable ROE and better risk control, but only if those returns persist.

Which bank fits each investor profile?

Conservative or core-holding investor

Start with SBI. Compare its latest asset-quality trend, capital and valuation with Bank of Baroda before committing. The decision should favour the bank that offers the strongest combination of durable ROE, funding stability and a reasonable P/B, not merely the largest balance sheet.

Value or operating-momentum investor

Bank of Baroda deserves the closest examination. Its official FY26 numbers provide a coherent evidence chain: INR 20,021 crore net profit, 16.2% global-advances growth, 17.9% organic retail growth, GNPA down to 1.89% and NNPA down to 0.45%. The remaining work is valuation and confirmation that FY26 credit performance carries into FY27.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-risk special-situation investor

IDBI Bank is relevant only when the latest filings validate durable improvement and the share price still offers upside if the transition succeeds. Set explicit exit conditions for renewed slippages, weak capital, stalled growth or an adverse strategic development.

Income-focused investor

Review each bank’s actual dividend history, payout ratio, capital needs and regulatory constraints in current filings. Bank size or a single profitable year does not establish sustainable dividend income.

A repeatable checklist before you buy

  1. Download the latest annual report and most recent quarterly presentation for each bank.
  2. Record deposits, advances, NII, NIM, operating profit, ROA, ROE, GNPA, NNPA, slippages, credit cost, PCR and capital adequacy in one worksheet.
  3. Classify loan growth by retail, agriculture, MSME, corporate and overseas exposure.
  4. Read management commentary for restructuring, write-offs, recoveries, concentration and deposit pricing.
  5. Calculate current P/B and compare it with a conservative sustainable-ROE estimate.
  6. Stress-test profit for slower loan growth, higher credit cost and a narrower NIM.
  7. Choose a position size that matches your tolerance for a public-sector-bank drawdown.
  8. Set a review date after the next quarterly result and define what evidence would change your thesis.

Risks common to all three stocks

  • Credit-cycle risk: Weak economic conditions can increase defaults after a period of strong growth.
  • Interest-rate and funding risk: Deposit repricing can compress margins even when loan growth remains healthy.
  • Concentration risk: Corporate, sectoral, geographic or overseas exposures can create losses that headline diversification hides.
  • Capital risk: Rapid growth may require new equity, reducing existing shareholders’ ownership percentage.
  • Policy and governance risk: Public-sector banks can face priorities that differ from a minority investor’s preferred capital allocation.
  • Valuation risk: A good bank can deliver a poor stock return if bought after expectations have been fully priced in.
  • Data-timing risk: FY26 numbers describe a completed year; Q1FY27 and later disclosures may change the ranking.

Bottom line

SBI is the default benchmark for a scale-first investor, Bank of Baroda is the most clearly evidenced FY26 operating-improvement story, and IDBI Bank belongs in the higher-risk special-situation bucket until its latest filings confirm a durable transition. Make the final choice only after matching each bank’s current P/B to sustainable ROE, checking asset-quality trends and deciding how much volatility you can hold through.
