Yes—ICY DOCK’s ToughArmor MB840M2P-B lets you slide a single M.2 NVMe SSD out of a tray at the rear expansion-slot area, without removing the PCIe adapter from the computer. That makes the drive quickly accessible, but it does not guarantee that you can swap it while the system is powered on: safe live removal depends on the motherboard, firmware, operating system, and drive workflow.

Can you swap an NVMe M.2 SSD without opening the case?

With the MB840M2P-B installed, the SSD sits in a removable tray accessible from the computer’s rear slot panel. The adapter remains in its PCIe slot while you remove the tray, so you do not have to open the case just to reach the drive. ICY DOCK describes the MB840M2P-B as a tool-less removable rack; its 2023 product guide lists one M.2 NVMe SSD and standard drive lengths from 2230 through 22110. ICY DOCK’s MB840M2P-B product guide.

The general arrangement is straightforward: secure the SSD in the tray with the rack’s mounting hardware and thermal interface, then slide the tray into the PCIe-mounted enclosure. A newer single-drive alternative, the MB305M4P-B, uses a quick-release knob for tray removal and installation. ICY DOCK’s MB305M4P-B page.

Is the ICY DOCK PCIe card hot-swappable?

Quick physical removal is not the same as guaranteed hot-swap support. The product information establishes removable-tray access, but it does not establish that every motherboard and operating system can safely disconnect and detect a drive while powered on. A user report describes one setup that needed PCIe bifurcation and a reboot after swapping, while another system did not detect the drive. User report on the MB840M2P-B.

ICY DOCK M.2 PCIe 3.0/4.0 NVMe SSD to 2.5" U.2 SSD Converter / Mounting Adapter with Heatsink | EZConvert MB705M2P-B
  • Convert your M.2 NVMe SSD into the 2.5” U.2 NVMe form factor with 9.5mm height)
  • Exact same dimensions, port locations, and screw-hole locations as a standard U.2 drive
  • Accepts any M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD from 30mm to 80mm in length (2230 / 2242 / 2260 / 2280)
  • 10,000 insertion/removal cycle rated U.2 connecto
  • Supports full Nvme bandwidth specification of 64Gbps

Unless your motherboard and operating-system documentation confirm a safe online-removal workflow, shut down before removing or inserting a tray. If you are attempting a supported powered removal, first unmount the volume and use the operating system’s safe-removal process. Do not pull a mounted drive simply because the tray is removable.

Which ICY DOCK model fits your setup?

Model Drive and interface Supported M.2 lengths Key compatibility point
MB840M2P-B One M.2 NVMe SSD; PCIe 4.0 x4. Fits x4, x8, or x16 slots. 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 ICY DOCK lists up to 64Gbps transfer speed. Check thickness and clearance against the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Manufacturer product guide.
MB305M4P-B One M.2 PCIe 3.0/4.0 NVMe SSD; PCIe 4.0 x4. 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 Removable tray with quick-release knob; full-height and low-profile brackets are listed. Manufacturer product page.
MB312M4P-B Two M.2 NVMe SSDs; PCIe 4.0 x8 design. Not stated in the cited product guide. ICY DOCK says motherboard PCIe bifurcation is required for both drives to be recognized. Manufacturer product guide.

The MB840M2P-B and MB305M4P-B are single-drive options; choose between them based on supported SSD dimensions and the specific tray and bracket features you need. The dual-drive MB312M4P-B is a different proposition: its two-drive design makes the host motherboard’s bifurcation support a deciding factor.

  • Fits 2x M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD from 30-110mm (2230, 2243, 2260, 2280, 22110)
  • Uses 1x PCIe 3.0/4.0 x8 or x16 slot (PCIe Bifurcation x4, x4, x4, x4 for PCIe 16x and x4, x4 for PCIe 8x is required to access both drives)
  • Installs to a single-width full-height PCIe express slot
  • Removable drive tray with tool-less drive installation for easy drive maintenance
  • Eagle-hook lock system keeps the drive secured in the enclosure

Will the MB840M2P-B fit a 2280 drive?

Yes. The MB840M2P-B guide lists 2280 among its supported M.2 lengths, alongside 2230, 2242, 2260, and 22110. Length is only one part of fit, though. Confirm that the SSD is an NVMe PCIe model—not a SATA M.2 drive—and check its keying, thickness, components, and clearance against the enclosure’s compatibility information. ICY DOCK provides a compatibility list to check where applicable.

Do you need PCIe bifurcation?

For the single-drive MB840M2P-B or MB305M4P-B, the cited product specifications describe a PCIe x4 connection; they do not state a bifurcation requirement. The MB312M4P-B dual-drive model is explicitly different: the manufacturer requires motherboard PCIe bifurcation for both SSDs to be recognized. Check your motherboard manual and firmware settings before choosing a multi-drive card. A user’s experience with the MB840M2P-B also shows that platform behavior can vary, so do not treat one setup’s results as a universal compatibility guarantee. User report.

What to check before buying

  • Slot: Verify the motherboard has a compatible PCIe slot and the lanes and generation needed by the chosen card.
  • SSD type: Confirm the drive is M.2 NVMe PCIe, not M.2 SATA.
  • Physical fit: Check M.2 keying, length, thickness, component clearance, and adjacent-card space against the enclosure’s specifications.
  • Drive count: For a two-drive card, verify motherboard bifurcation support and configuration requirements.
  • Removal workflow: Confirm motherboard, firmware, and operating-system support if you intend to remove a drive while powered on; otherwise, plan to shut down first.
