Choose iCloud Photos if your household is built around Apple devices and you want your library integrated with the Apple Photos app. Choose Google Photos if you use a mix of Apple, Android, and computer platforms, or want to choose between original-quality and space-saving uploads. Neither service should be treated as your only copy of irreplaceable photos: iCloud Photos syncs deletions across devices and is not duplicated in iCloud Backup.
How the two services handle your photo library
iCloud Photos syncs one library
With iCloud Photos enabled, photos and videos upload to iCloud in their original format and full resolution, and changes made on one device appear on other devices using the same Apple Account. That makes it convenient to work with one library across Apple devices, but it also means edits and deletions sync rather than creating independent copies. If you enable Optimize iPhone Storage or Optimize Mac Storage, the full-resolution versions remain in iCloud while space-saving versions may be kept on the device. This frees device storage; it does not create a second backup on that device. Apple’s iCloud Photos overview describes the storage options.
Google Photos backs up to a Google Account
Google Photos backs up items to the Google Account selected in the app. Before relying on it, check that the intended account is signed in, backup is turned on, and the app shows that backup has completed. Google supports the service on iPhone, iPad, Android, and computers. On iPhone and iPad, Google advises leaving the app open while a backup is running. Which service preserves image quality?
iCloud Photos
Apple says iCloud Photos uploads photos and videos in their original format and full resolution. Device optimization changes which version is stored locally, not the original kept in iCloud.
Google Photos
Google offers two backup-quality options. Original quality keeps the captured resolution. Storage saver can reduce storage use, but it changes some files: photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 megapixels, and videos above 1080p are resized to high-definition 1080p. Google also says some uploads may be compressed or changed to a different format. Review Google’s backup-quality details before choosing; Storage saver is not equivalent to keeping every original unchanged.

How much included storage do you get?
The headline amounts are account storage, not dedicated photo quotas. Google says a Google Account has up to 15 GB of storage, shared across Google services; Apple says new iCloud users get 5 GB, which is also used by other iCloud data. Both services offer ways to buy more storage, but the actual space available for photos depends on what else is stored in the account. What happens if you delete photos?
iCloud Photos deletion syncs
Deleting a photo in iCloud Photos deletes it from devices using that library. Apple’s setup guide says an item in Recently Deleted can be recovered for 30 days. That recovery window is useful for mistakes, but it is not a long-term archive. Apple also says items in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in the daily iCloud Backup, and advises keeping backup copies of the library. For photos you cannot replace, keep a separate copy outside the synced library, such as on an external drive.

Keep a separate copy of important images
For Google Photos, verify that each item has finished backing up before assuming it is preserved in the account. A backup service is still tied to account access and service settings; the available sources do not establish an equivalent separate archival guarantee for Google Photos. Google’s guidance also says content may be deleted after two or more years of account inactivity, and warns of possible deletion if an account remains over its storage quota for two or more years. Review Google’s activity and storage policy guidance and maintain an independent copy for valuable images.
Which devices can you use?
Apple documents iCloud Photos on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Windows, and the web. Google Photos is available on iPhone, iPad, Android, and computers. For an Apple-centered household, iCloud Photos fits naturally into the Photos library. For a household that moves between Android, Apple devices, and computers, Google Photos offers broader platform coverage. Availability alone does not confirm that a particular device has finished syncing or backing up.

What about privacy and encryption?
Apple documents an optional Advanced Data Protection setting that extends end-to-end encryption to Photos. With standard data protection, Apple holds keys for many data categories; with Advanced Data Protection, account recovery depends more heavily on user-controlled recovery methods. Apple’s explanation is at Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. The sources available here do not establish a directly comparable Google Photos encryption configuration, so they do not support a categorical claim that one service is more secure overall.

Choose based on your situation
- Mostly Apple devices: iCloud Photos is the straightforward choice if you want the Apple Photos library to stay in sync across your devices.
- A mix of platforms: Google Photos is a practical fit if you need access across Apple, Android, and computers.
- Original quality is essential: iCloud Photos stores originals at full resolution; on Google Photos, select Original quality rather than Storage saver.
- Device storage is tight: iCloud’s Optimize Storage option can keep full-resolution files in iCloud while reducing local storage use.
- Photos are irreplaceable: Keep a separate copy regardless of which service you choose, and verify that uploads or sync have completed.
