IBM announced two self-paced IBM SkillsBuild certificate learning plans for community-college delivery: one in cybersecurity and one in data analytics. IBM said each plan requires about 60–65 hours and reported American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations of 12 credits for cybersecurity and 8 credits for data analytics. The announcement described a planned fall 2024 rollout through community-college systems in Alabama, the San Francisco Bay Area, Colorado and Louisiana; it does not establish that every named college is enrolling students now.

What IBM announced

In its July 22, 2024 announcement, IBM said the certificates had been piloted with students in Alabama, Colorado, California and Louisiana during 2023. IBM described the learning plans as competency-based coursework developed with community-college, academic and industry input, including contributions from Jobs for the Future and industry experts. Colleges can integrate the plans into existing curricula rather than offering them only as stand-alone online study.

The announcement names intended deployment through four community-college systems or consortia:

  • Alabama
  • The San Francisco Bay Area in California
  • Colorado
  • Louisiana

Those locations identify the systems IBM selected for the planned rollout, not a current enrollment list. A student should verify availability, application steps, delivery format and deadlines with the specific college.

What each certificate covers

Certificate Subject areas IBM lists Stated learning time ACE recommendation reported by IBM
Cybersecurity Governance, risk, compliance and privacy; vulnerability management; systems, networks and cloud security; security operations; incident response and forensics 60–65 hours, self-paced 12 credits
Data Analytics Data classification and organizational usability; descriptive and inferential statistics; data collection and analysis; data preparation; visualization and presentation 60–65 hours, self-paced 8 credits

The 60–65-hour figure is IBM’s stated estimate for each learning plan. It is not a guaranteed completion time for every learner.

Do the certificates count for college credit?

IBM reported ACE credit recommendations of 12 credits for completing the cybersecurity certificate and 8 credits for completing the data analytics certificate. An ACE recommendation is not automatic transfer credit. Each college decides whether and how the recommendation applies to a degree, certificate or elective requirement.

Before enrolling, ask the registrar or program adviser:

  • Whether the SkillsBuild certificate is currently offered and for which term.
  • Whether it is embedded in a credit-bearing course or assessed separately.
  • Which local course numbers or degree requirements, if any, the recommended credits satisfy.
  • Whether a portfolio, exam, proctored assessment or other verification is required.
  • How the credit affects financial aid, prerequisites and graduation audits.

Who the programs are designed for

IBM says the plans are intended for learners with a high-school diploma or GED, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree in a nontechnical field. The company describes possible directions such as junior information security analyst, network security technician, data visualization specialist and entry-level marketing analyst. These are potential job directions, not placement guarantees or labor-market outcome data.

Cybersecurity certificate and CompTIA Security+

IBM says the cybersecurity coursework aligns with CompTIA Security+ certification topics and skills. Alignment means the subjects overlap; completing the IBM certificate does not award the separate CompTIA Security+ certification. Anyone pursuing Security+ must independently meet CompTIA’s requirements and take its exam. IBM’s announcement does not state that Security+ preparation or an exam is required to complete the SkillsBuild certificate.

What learners receive through SkillsBuild

IBM said SkillsBuild also provides access to other credentials and more than 1,000 free courses, covering areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, cybersecurity, data analytics, cloud computing and workplace skills. The course count is IBM’s figure in the 2024 announcement and may change as the catalog changes.

How to evaluate a local offering

  1. Find the college’s current catalog or workforce-training page and search for the exact IBM SkillsBuild certificate name.
  2. Confirm whether the plan is active, planned, credit-bearing, noncredit or part of another program.
  3. Request the local syllabus, pacing expectations, assessment method and student-support contacts.
  4. Get a written explanation of how any ACE recommendation fits your specific degree plan before assuming credits will transfer.
  5. Ask about access dates, technology requirements, instructor help and any fees; IBM’s announcement does not establish these institution-level details.

Cybersecurity or data analytics: which is the better fit?

If your goal is to… More directly aligned plan Why
Understand security controls, vulnerabilities, networks, cloud environments or incident handling Cybersecurity Its listed competencies span governance and risk through operations, response and forensics.
Work with data quality, statistics, analysis or communicating findings visually Data Analytics Its topics progress from classification and preparation to statistical analysis and presentation.
Maximize the IBM-reported ACE recommendation Cybersecurity IBM reported 12 recommended credits versus 8 for data analytics; local acceptance still controls the result.

Both plans were described as self-paced and 60–65 hours. IBM’s announcement does not provide comparative completion rates, costs, instructor-support levels, employment outcomes or current college-by-college enrollment.

What is—and is not—established about availability

The strongest confirmed information is IBM’s 2024 design and rollout announcement. It establishes the intended participating regions, curriculum themes, stated duration, pilot history and reported ACE recommendations. It does not verify that a particular campus is accepting applications in 2026, nor does it set uniform tuition, admission, assessment or transfer-credit rules. Contact the relevant community college for those current terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an IBM SkillsBuild certificate take?

IBM describes each certificate learning plan as 60–65 hours and self-paced. Actual completion time depends on the learner and the college’s delivery model.

Does completing the cybersecurity certificate make me CompTIA Security+ certified?

No. IBM says the coursework aligns with Security+ topics and skills, but the IBM certificate is separate from CompTIA’s certification and exam.

Are the certificates free?

IBM’s announcement says SkillsBuild includes more than 1,000 free courses, but it does not establish that every college-delivered certificate has no tuition or other local charges. Ask the college about current costs.

The Bottom Line

IBM’s two SkillsBuild plans offer a 60–65-hour introduction to cybersecurity or data analytics, with ACE recommendations reported as 12 and 8 credits respectively. Treat the 2024 rollout announcement as a program description—not proof of current enrollment or guaranteed transfer credit—and verify the details with your community college.
