Greenock Morton announced on 1 October 2026 that manager Ian Murray and first-team coach Bill Orr had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Michael O’Halloran and Gary Miller are in charge of first-team affairs until further notice; the club did not name a permanent successor.
Who is in charge of Morton now?
Michael O’Halloran and Gary Miller have temporary responsibility for the first team. Morton’s statement said: “Taking charge of first-team affairs until further notice will be Michael O’Halloran and Gary Miller.” The notice did not specify a longer-term appointment.
What happened to Ian Murray and Bill Orr?
In a statement dated 1 October 2026, the Greenock Morton board said: “The Board of Greenock Morton Football Club can confirm that Ian Murray has been relieved of his duties as First Team Manager with immediate effect.” First-team coach Bill Orr was also relieved of his duties. The club thanked both for their work, commitment and professionalism, wished them well, and asked supporters to back the team. Greenock Morton’s announcement is the primary source for the departures and interim appointments.
Why did Morton make the change?
The club did not give a detailed explanation of the board’s reasoning in its statement. League form provides context, but does not establish the board’s stated motive: the SPFL reported on 1 October 2026 that Morton were bottom of the William Hill Championship, with one point from their opening eight league matches. That is a snapshot from the announcement date, not a current standings update. The SPFL report also provides the club’s recent managerial and league context.

When did Murray join Morton?
Murray joined Morton in January 2026 after Dougie Imrie moved to fellow Championship club Raith Rovers. Morton finished eighth in the 2025–26 season, two points above ninth-place Airdrieonians and four ahead of tenth-place Ross County, according to the SPFL. Those previous-season figures are separate from the one-point tally reported at the time of Murray’s departure.

Morton’s statement referred to the scheduled home match against Raith Rovers on Saturday and urged supporters to attend and back the team. It said further updates would follow in due course. No permanent manager was announced in the notice, so the interim arrangement is the only confirmed leadership information in that announcement.
