I reclaimed 300GB by compressing installed game folders, but that was my result—not a reliable promise for every library. The bigger lesson was to stop treating compression as an all-or-nothing fix: savings and performance vary by game and system, and CompactGUI warns against using it on games that use DirectStorage on Windows 11.

What game-folder compression does—and what it doesn’t

Windows filesystem compression stores files in a compressed form while keeping them at their normal paths. Windows transparently decompresses them when an application uses them, so this is not the same as packing a game into a ZIP archive that you must extract before playing.

CompactGUI is a graphical interface for applying Windows compression to game and program folders. It does not move a game or make its files inaccessible through ordinary paths; it changes how eligible files are stored on disk.

My 300GB figure describes my own library and circumstances. It has not been independently verified, and it should not be read as a typical result. Compression depends on the files involved, so a library-wide total can conceal games that shrink substantially and others that save little.

Why compressing everything was the wrong move

Per-game savings are uneven

A total recovered-space figure is useful for describing what happened, but it does not tell you which games benefited or whether the same result will recur after updates. In a July 25, 2026 report, Tom’s Hardware described an ARK: Survival Evolved example changing from 169 GB to 91 GB—reported as 54% of its original size—and a Crimson Desert example that saved 32 GB. Those are reported examples attributed to particular games, not independent benchmarks or a forecast for other libraries: Tom’s Hardware’s report.

Compression adds work during use

Compressed files have to be decompressed for use. How noticeable that work is depends on the data, compression algorithm, and system. Microsoft cautions that compression-performance comparisons are approximate because results can depend on input data: Microsoft’s Compression API documentation.

There is no controlled, authoritative comparison here that establishes a universal frame-rate or loading-time cost for compressed game libraries across different games, processors, drives, and methods. Don’t assume either zero impact or a fixed penalty. Judge the games you actually play on your own PC.

DirectStorage is a specific compatibility check

CompactGUI’s project documentation says: “This tool should not be used on games that utilise DirectStorage on Windows 11.” Treat that as targeted guidance from the tool’s project, not as proof that filesystem compression breaks every new game. Check current compatibility for a title before compressing it.

DirectStorage is a game asset-loading technology whose documentation describes in-place decompression and lets developers choose a method to balance compression ratio and performance. That developer-controlled asset pipeline is distinct from applying Windows filesystem compression to already-installed files. See Microsoft’s DirectStorage overview.

How to compress selectively instead

  1. Choose one installed game folder. Start with a game you can test and that is not covered by CompactGUI’s DirectStorage-on-Windows-11 warning. Do not begin by selecting an entire library.
  2. Apply compression with CompactGUI. Use the project’s current instructions for selecting and processing a folder: CompactGUI on GitHub.
  3. Record the before-and-after storage use. Compare the folder’s size before and after processing so you know what that particular game actually saved.
  4. Play the game as you normally would. Pay attention to loading, gameplay, and whether updates or ordinary use create problems. If the change is inconvenient or performance is unacceptable, restore the folder’s previous state using the tool’s current guidance.
  5. Decide game by game. Keep compression only where the space gained is worth it on your system; leave other titles alone.

Updates may alter a game’s files, so recheck storage use after a major update rather than assuming the original saving still applies. CompactGUI is intended for game and program folders; its project says whole drives and complete Windows installations are outside its scope. Its separate reference to Windows’ compact /compactOS command concerns Windows system compression, not a recommendation to compress an entire game drive.

Should you compress your whole Steam library?

Usually, don’t make the whole library your first target. A library-wide operation makes it harder to spot which games saved space, which are unsuitable, and whether any change affects the games you play. Selective compression gives you a comparison based on your own games and PC instead of an assumption about a fixed compression ratio.

If you need more room than selective compression can recover—or would rather avoid changing game files—adding storage is another option. Whether an SSD fits depends on your laptop or motherboard, available interface, and capacity needs; the sources here establish no particular model, price, or compatibility. Compare the cost and installation constraints for your system with the space each compressed game actually frees.
