Google Maps won for one rider on a four-day motorcycle trip in the Philippines, mainly because it showed more route alternatives and made it easier to judge why a route had been chosen. That is a personal comparison across three rides—not proof that Google Maps is universally better than Apple Maps.
What decided the comparison?
The deciding factor was route information, not simply the lowest estimated arrival time. On unfamiliar roads, the rider valued seeing different options and weighing their trade-offs. That mattered more than a few minutes on an ETA.
The account describes comparing Google Maps and Apple Maps on a motorcycle head unit during a four-day vacation in the Philippines. It covers three route legs; the fourth day was for rest and reflection. The writer did not report app versions, device models, controlled conditions, independent measurements, or repeat trials.
How did the apps compare on each route?
Dingalan to Baler
The first question was whether either app would offer a shorter but more demanding mountain route. The rider described more than 65 kilometers of twisting roads. Google Maps showed two options with different distances, estimated times, and road qualities; Apple Maps did not show the mountain option the rider found more interesting. The rider preferred Google Maps for giving a choice. This observation is not a safety assessment of either route.

Baler to Cervantes via Tabuk
This leg combined a long ride with difficult mountain terrain. The rider noted possible landslides, closures, rough surfaces, and water crossings. In the account, Google Maps produced the more coherent itinerary after its fuel-saving feature was turned off. Apple Maps reportedly proposed backtracking and a much longer route.
The writer reported app estimates of 11 hours 45 minutes for Google Maps and more than 14 hours for Apple Maps. Those were displayed route estimates, not measured travel times or evidence that either estimate would hold in other conditions.

Cervantes to San Juan
The route suggestions were described as very similar and accurate on this leg. The rider gave Google Maps a slight edge because its ETA seemed closer to the actual experience. The account does not specify a controlled timing method, so this is one rider’s judgment rather than a general finding about ETA accuracy.

For this rider, alternatives and enough route detail to evaluate them mattered most on complicated, unfamiliar roads. The first two legs favored Google Maps in the writer’s account, while the third was close. The comparison does not establish that Google Maps is better for every trip, or that Apple Maps will routinely produce a worse route. On simpler journeys, the difference may be small.

Use the account as an example of a preference to consider when choosing between navigation apps: do you want to inspect route options, or do you mainly need turn-by-turn guidance to a destination? It does not establish which app is safer, faster overall, or more accurate across the Philippines.
