Cleaning up Google storage can uncover room you may not need to pay for—but the amount depends on what is actually counting toward your quota. Google storage is shared by Drive, Gmail, Google Photos, and WhatsApp backups, so check the storage breakdown before deleting anything. The 10 GB in this title is one person’s reported result, not a typical or guaranteed saving.
What Google One storage covers
Your Google account’s storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, Google Photos, and WhatsApp backups. When the shared quota is full, Google says you may be unable to upload to Drive or back up photos and videos, and Gmail sending and receiving can be affected. See Google’s overview of how storage works and how to manage it.
Google says personal accounts include up to 15 GB at no charge, while Google One plans start at 100 GB in the plan information on its storage purchase help page. Plan lineups, eligibility, prices, and availability can vary, so check the current options for your account and region rather than assuming a particular tier or price.
Find what is using space before you delete
On a computer, Google’s instructions are to open Google One, select Storage, choose Free up account storage, then review suggested items or select a service and choose files to delete. The labels or layout may differ by device or account; Google’s computer cleanup instructions describe this route.

Review the categories and services first. The goal is to remove items that count toward your quota and that you no longer need—not simply to delete the largest-looking files. In particular, Google says deleting photos backed up in Storage saver does not free quota, so confirm whether a photo collection is consuming storage before spending time removing it for this reason.
Where cleanup can recover space
Empty trash and bin folders
Deleting a file may not immediately remove its storage use: items in Drive trash or Gmail and Photos trash can continue counting until permanently cleared. Empty the relevant bin after reviewing its contents. Google says totals after many deletions can take up to 48–72 hours to update, so a delayed change does not necessarily mean the cleanup failed. Its storage management guidance covers both bin cleanup and the update delay.

Search Gmail for large or old attachments
Google suggests Gmail searches that narrow the results to likely space users. Try these queries in Gmail’s search box:
has:attachment larger:10Mto find messages with attachments larger than 10 MB.filename:.pdf larger:5Mto find larger PDF attachments.older_than:2y has:attachmentto find messages older than two years that have attachments.
Review the messages and attachments before deleting; an old email may still contain records or files you need. Empty Gmail’s trash if you decide to remove messages permanently.

Sort Drive by size and review duplicates manually
In Google Drive, open Storage to see files sorted from largest to smallest. This makes it easier to identify large videos, archives, or other files that may be candidates for download or deletion. Google says Drive does not have a built-in automatic duplicate finder, so check possible duplicate files manually rather than expecting Drive to identify them for you.
Check backups and hidden app data
Old device backups and hidden app data may contribute to the storage shown under “other.” Review them carefully: a backup can be the only remaining copy of information from a device or app. Google includes backups and hidden app data among the areas to check in its storage cleanup guidance.

Handle WhatsApp backups with care
Google warns that deleting a WhatsApp backup is permanent. If you switch phones or reinstall WhatsApp before making a new backup, you could lose chat history. Google also says the backup may reappear unless you change the relevant settings first. Do not delete it just because it is large; make sure you understand the effect on your chats and future backups.
Keep a copy before removing cloud files
If you want to retain a file but stop storing it in Google’s cloud, download it to a personal device before deleting the cloud copy. Google describes this option in How your Google storage works. An external hard drive is one possible place to archive downloaded files, but it is optional; use a destination you can access and protect, and verify the copy before removing the original.

Decide whether to keep paying for more storage
Cleanup is a sensible first move if the quota is occupied by files you can safely delete or archive. Keeping a paid Google One plan may make sense if you still need shared capacity after cleanup or rely on automatic cloud backups and do not want to reduce them. Compare the space you can genuinely recover with your continuing need for Drive, Gmail, Photos, and backup capacity; Google lists both cleanup and buying more storage as options.
If you choose to change a plan, Google says the change may take up to 24 hours to take effect. That is separate from the up-to-48–72-hour delay Google gives for storage totals to reflect many deletions. Current plan details should be checked directly because the available tiers and prices can change.
Know the longer-term risk of staying over quota
Being over quota is not described as an immediate deletion event. Google says content may be deleted after an account remains over quota for two years, and that it provides notice at least three months before content becomes eligible for deletion. Treat this as a reason to address a persistent storage problem, not as a claim that files will disappear as soon as the quota is exceeded. The policy is described in Google’s storage policy information.
