Hypersonic and ballistic are not opposite categories. Hypersonic describes speed—normally Mach 5 or faster—while ballistic describes a missile’s post-boost flight path. A ballistic missile can therefore travel at hypersonic speed. The practical difference is that a conventional ballistic reentry vehicle follows a comparatively predictable arc, whereas hypersonic glide vehicles and hypersonic cruise missiles are designed to operate in ways that can vary altitude, maneuver, or remain powered in the atmosphere.
That distinction affects warning time, tracking, propulsion, and interception. Lower, maneuvering flight can make a weapon harder to track and cue an interceptor, but it does not make interception physically impossible. Public test reports demonstrate particular capabilities in particular scenarios; they do not establish a universal ability to defeat every hypersonic or ballistic weapon.
What “hypersonic” and “ballistic” actually mean
Hypersonic is a speed threshold
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) defines hypersonic weapons as those flying at least Mach 5, approximately 3,800 mph in its September 2019 explainer. Mach is a ratio to the local speed of sound, so the miles-per-hour equivalent changes with altitude, temperature, and atmospheric conditions. Mach 5 is a useful threshold, not a single fixed mph value everywhere.

A vehicle can be traveling at hypersonic speed while following a conventional ballistic trajectory, gliding through the atmosphere, or using an engine to remain powered. GAO also notes that long-range ballistic missiles can reach similar speeds. See the agency’s definition and illustrations in Science & Tech Spotlight: Hypersonic Weapons.

Ballistic describes the post-boost path
In the standard comparison, a ballistic missile uses a rocket during its boost phase. After the rocket burns out, its payload or reentry vehicle travels mainly under momentum and gravity along a path set by launch conditions, the target, and atmospheric effects. The path is often described as a high, roughly parabolic arc, although real systems can make adjustments and use different trajectories.
“Ballistic” therefore does not mean slow, nor does it mean the missile never enters the atmosphere. A ballistic reentry vehicle can reenter at hypersonic speed. The defining feature is the largely ballistic post-boost trajectory, not the vehicle’s maximum Mach number.
The overlap in one sentence
A ballistic missile may be hypersonic because it exceeds Mach 5; a hypersonic weapon is not necessarily ballistic because it may glide or remain powered in the atmosphere. GAO summarized the operational distinction this way: “Unlike ballistic missiles, which can reach similar speeds but have a relatively fixed flight path, hypersonic weapons, once developed, would fly at lower altitudes, be highly maneuverable, and may be able to change targets during flight.” That is GAO’s qualified description of the intended difference, not a claim that every fielded weapon has those attributes.
The three flight classes readers most often confuse
| Characteristic | Ballistic missile or ballistic reentry vehicle | Hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) | Hypersonic cruise missile (HCM) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the label means | A mainly ballistic post-boost trajectory; it may reach hypersonic speed. | A hypersonic vehicle boosted by a rocket, then released to glide and maneuver. | A powered vehicle that flies at hypersonic speed in the atmosphere. |
| Power after boost | The payload normally follows the ballistic path after rocket burnout. | Unpowered glide after the rocket boost in GAO’s overview. | Rocket boost followed by ramjet or scramjet propulsion in GAO’s overview. |
| Typical path in the comparison | A more predictable arc determined largely by launch conditions, target, and gravity. | Varied trajectories with the ability to maneuver, complicating destination prediction. | A lower atmospheric path than a traditional ballistic arc in the GAO comparison. |
| Defense implication | The high arc and comparatively predictable path provide a different detection and interception geometry. | Glide-phase maneuvering can make a future position harder to calculate. | Lower altitude can reduce radar horizon and warning time; actual performance depends on the system and conditions. |
| Important caveat | “Ballistic” is not synonymous with subsonic or non-maneuvering at every stage. | Not every weapon marketed or described as hypersonic uses the same glide profile. | A notional diagram does not establish the specifications of a particular missile. |
The altitude figures often reproduced in diagrams are illustrative, not universal specifications. GAO’s 2019 explainer placed a notional HGV at approximately 25–60 miles altitude and a notional HCM at approximately 12–19 miles. Those are the ranges in that 2019 comparison and should not be applied to every current or classified design.
How a ballistic missile flies
Boost phase
Rocket engines accelerate the missile and set the initial direction and energy. During this phase, infrared satellites and other sensors may detect the hot exhaust plume. The boost phase is comparatively short, and a defender must identify the launch, estimate the trajectory, and pass usable data to other systems quickly.

Midcourse or coast
After powered flight, the payload follows a ballistic or near-ballistic path through the upper atmosphere or space, depending on the trajectory. Gravity and the initial launch vector dominate the motion. Because the path is more constrained than that of a maneuvering glide vehicle, tracking systems can often project a future impact area earlier, although uncertainty remains and some ballistic systems can use countermeasures or limited maneuvering.
Reentry and terminal flight
The reentry vehicle descends through the atmosphere at very high speed. Atmospheric drag, heating, and any terminal maneuver alter the exact path. Defenders may engage during different portions of the flight, depending on the interceptor’s reach, sensor coverage, and the target’s trajectory. A high arc can provide more geometric separation from some surface radars than a low atmospheric route, but it also creates a track that can be observed by dedicated sensors.
How a hypersonic glide vehicle flies
- Rocket boost: A booster accelerates the glide vehicle to the speed and altitude needed for release.
- Separation: The glide body leaves the booster and begins atmospheric flight rather than continuing on a conventional ballistic reentry arc.
- Glide and maneuver: Lift from the vehicle’s shape supports flight while control surfaces or other mechanisms alter heading and altitude. The body is unpowered in the broad GAO description, so it trades speed and energy for range and maneuvering.
- Terminal approach: The vehicle continues toward its target while the defender tries to maintain a track despite changing position and speed.
An HGV’s value is not simply a higher top speed. Its combination of speed, lower flight than a traditional ballistic arc, and ability to vary the path can delay a confident estimate of where it will be. The exact amount of maneuvering, altitude, range, and thermal-control performance is system-specific and often not public.
How a hypersonic cruise missile flies
An HCM remains powered during atmospheric flight. In GAO’s 2019 overview, a rocket accelerates the missile to roughly Mach 3–4 before a ramjet or scramjet takes over. A ramjet compresses incoming air using the vehicle’s forward motion; a scramjet is designed to burn fuel while the airflow through the engine remains supersonic. These are broad design descriptions, not specifications for every program.
Because an HCM stays in the atmosphere and is depicted at a lower altitude than a traditional ballistic arc, terrain and the radar horizon become important. A ground radar may not see the vehicle until it is relatively close, and a route that changes laterally can complicate the defender’s choice of an engagement point. Actual detectability depends on the missile’s altitude, radar cross-section, speed, route, weather, sensor placement, and the quality of the tracking network.

| Question to ask | Ballistic system | HGV | HCM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is Mach 5 guaranteed? | Not by the word ballistic; many long-range ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speed, but speed varies by phase and design. | Hypersonic is part of the intended definition, normally at least Mach 5. | Hypersonic is part of the intended definition, normally at least Mach 5 during powered atmospheric flight. |
| Where is it powered? | Rocket propulsion during boost; the reentry vehicle normally coasts after burnout. | Rocket propulsion before release; the glide body is described as unpowered after boost. | Rocket boost, then ramjet or scramjet propulsion in the atmospheric portion described by GAO. |

Why hypersonic targets can be harder to defend against
Detection is only the first step
A defense network must detect a launch or vehicle, classify it, maintain a precise track, predict where it will be, communicate that track to an interceptor, and guide the interceptor into a viable engagement region. A target that changes altitude or heading can invalidate an earlier projection. High speed reduces the time available for each update, but speed alone does not make interception impossible.

Lower flight can reduce the warning window
Radar coverage is limited by line of sight and the curvature of the Earth. A vehicle flying lower in the atmosphere can remain below a ground radar’s horizon until it is closer to the defended area. That can shorten the time to detect, decide, and engage compared with a target whose high arc is visible to long-range sensors. Space-based sensors, airborne sensors, and a network of geographically separated radars can help, but their coverage and data quality differ.
Maneuvering complicates prediction
A conventional ballistic track can often be extrapolated from observed position and velocity with increasing confidence as more data arrive. An HGV or HCM that changes its path creates a larger set of possible future positions. The defender must keep updating the track and select an engagement geometry that remains valid despite those changes.
Interceptors still have physical opportunities
“Harder to defend” is not the same as “undefendable.” An interceptor may be designed for a particular phase—boost, glide, terminal, or another segment—and its effectiveness depends on sensor coverage, engagement range, target behavior, software, and environmental conditions. Public information does not support a universal probability of interception for hypersonic weapons.
What defense programs and tests have actually shown
Glide-phase interception and space-based tracking concepts
A June 2022 GAO review described the Missile Defense Agency’s Glide Phase Interceptor effort as intended to engage a target during the glide phase. The same report described the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor effort as a space-based tracking concept. GAO raised concerns during that review about independent technology-risk assessment, cost estimates, and coordination. Those findings describe the review period; they should not be read as a current schedule or a final judgment on later program decisions. The report is available at Missile Defense: Better Oversight and Coordination Needed for Counter-Hypersonic Development.

What the March 2025 FTX-40 test demonstrated
On March 24, 2025, the Missile Defense Agency and the U.S. Navy conducted Flight Test Other-40 (FTX-40). In its March 25 release, MDA said USS Pinckney detected and tracked an advanced maneuvering hypersonic target and carried out a simulated engagement using Sea Based Terminal Increment 3 in an Aegis software baseline. The release identified the target as an air-launched medium-range ballistic missile with a hypersonic target-vehicle front end.
This is evidence that the ship, sensors, software, and test architecture performed the stated detection, tracking, and simulated-engagement sequence in that scenario. It was not a live intercept, and it does not prove that the same system can defeat every hypersonic threat or every ballistic missile. Read the release at MDA and Navy accomplish next step in Hypersonic Missile Defense.
Current U.S. program example: CPS and LRHW
A July 17, 2026 GAO report says the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) and the Army’s Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) share a missile and glide body. The report describes LRHW as using a land-based hot launch, while CPS uses a cold-gas launch from a ship or submarine.
GAO reported Navy plans for CPS deployment on Zumwalt-class destroyers in the late 2020s and on Virginia-class submarines in the early 2030s. These are reported plans, not confirmation that the systems were fully fielded on those dates. Schedule, integration, testing, and operational availability can change. The report is at Navy Ship Modernization: DOD Needs Comprehensive Strategy to Field Hypersonic Missile Capability.

How large is the development effort?
GAO counted 70 U.S. government hypersonic weapons and related technology-development efforts and estimated almost $15 billion for fiscal years 2015–2024. That figure is a count and cost estimate of the efforts GAO identified. It is not an annual budget, a global total, or a statement of current spending. How to evaluate a claim about a missile
- Separate speed from trajectory. Ask whether the claim gives a Mach threshold, a sustained speed, or only a peak speed, and under what atmospheric conditions.
- Identify the vehicle class. Determine whether it is a ballistic reentry vehicle, an HGV, an HCM, or a different design. The word “hypersonic” alone is insufficient.
- Check the altitude regime. Establish whether the vehicle is exo-atmospheric, gliding in the atmosphere, or powered throughout the atmospheric leg. A diagram’s altitude range may be notional.
- Trace propulsion before and after boost. A rocket booster, an unpowered glide body, and a ramjet or scramjet imply different flight behavior and sensor requirements.
- Look for demonstrated maneuvering. Distinguish a test that measured a maneuver from a statement that a future system may maneuver or change targets.
- Read the defense evidence precisely. “Detected,” “tracked,” “simulated engagement,” and “intercepted” are different results. Note the target type, software baseline, sensor, date, and test conditions.
- Separate plans from fielded capability. A projected deployment date is not proof that an operational unit has the weapon or that its full mission set is available.
Common misconceptions
“Every hypersonic missile is faster than every ballistic missile.”
False. Hypersonic is a threshold, and long-range ballistic missiles can reach comparable speeds. The meaningful comparison includes altitude, propulsion, maneuverability, and the portion of the flight in which the speed is sustained.
“Ballistic missiles fly in a perfect, unchangeable parabola.”
False. Their post-boost path is more predictable in the standard comparison because it is governed largely by launch conditions and gravity, but real systems and reentry vehicles can use different trajectories and may include countermeasures or limited maneuvering.
“Hypersonic weapons cannot be intercepted.”
Unsupported. Their lower, maneuvering flight can create difficult tracking and cueing problems, yet defense systems can detect, track, and conduct engagements in specific scenarios. A simulated engagement is not a live intercept, and no public source establishes a universal interception probability.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall“One flight diagram gives the specifications of every system.”
False. The 25–60-mile HGV and 12–19-mile HCM ranges in GAO’s 2019 explainer are notional expected ranges from that comparison. Classified and developing systems can differ substantially.
Bottom line
Use the labels correctly: hypersonic tells you how fast a vehicle travels, while ballistic tells you how it flies after boost. A ballistic missile can be hypersonic, but a maneuvering glide vehicle or powered cruise missile presents a different tracking problem. Defenses must be judged by the exact sensor, interceptor, software, target, and test result—not by the word “hypersonic” alone.
