There is no universal winner. Hyperliquid is the strongest default for traders who want an order-book interface, many active markets and a clearly published base fee. dYdX suits traders who prefer a dedicated appchain and familiar maker-taker tiers. GMX is the better fit for users who want oracle-priced, keeper-executed positions against pool liquidity on supported EVM networks. The right choice depends on the exact market, position size, leverage, wallet setup and total execution cost at the moment you trade.

These venues are not interchangeable versions of the same product. Hyperliquid and dYdX match orders through order-book workflows, while GMX prices positions from oracles and executes eligible orders through keepers against liquidity pools. That design difference affects spreads, slippage, funding or borrow charges, liquidation behavior, network fees and the risks you take.

Quick comparison

The table below describes the published designs and fee information available in 2026. Rates, markets and risk parameters can change, so treat it as a framework for checking the live interface rather than a permanent price list.

How the three exchanges execute a perpetual trade

Hyperliquid: an order-book workflow

Hyperliquid presents perpetuals in the way experienced exchange traders expect: a market has bids and asks, and you can submit maker or taker orders. A limit order that adds liquidity may receive the maker rate; an order that immediately matches resting liquidity pays the taker rate. The published base perpetual rates are 0.015% for makers and 0.045% for takers. Higher rolling 14-day weighted-volume tiers reduce those rates. Hyperliquid states that spot and perpetual schedules are separate, but combined volume determines the tier, so activity in one product can affect the discount applied to the other.

Order-book execution lets you inspect visible depth and choose between immediate execution and a price-controlled limit order. It also exposes you to the usual order-book limitations: displayed liquidity can disappear, a large order can consume several price levels, and the quoted spread can change rapidly during volatile periods. Check the depth for the specific contract rather than assuming that a venue with high overall activity will provide the best fill on every altcoin.

dYdX: a dedicated appchain with maker-taker conventions

dYdX uses maker and taker orders on a dedicated application-specific chain. Its fee documentation calculates taker tiers from total US-dollar volume over the trailing 30 days across perpetual order books. The exact percentage depends on the tier shown for your account and can change through governance. Canceled orders are not charged. By default, a trader does not pay a separate gas fee for executing a trade; the trading fee is the relevant charge, although governance can alter that arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This model is familiar if you have used a centralized exchange: place a limit order to seek maker treatment, or cross the spread for immediate taker execution. The appchain can reduce some general-purpose-chain friction, but you still need to understand the chain’s wallet, deposit and withdrawal process, validator operation and any transaction costs outside the trade itself. Fees accrue by default to validators and stakers, subject to governance decisions.

GMX: oracle prices, keepers and pool liquidity

GMX does not match your position with a conventional central order book. Its contracts use oracle prices, while keepers execute eligible orders. A market or limit order is evaluated against the oracle and the configured market parameters; it is not filled simply because another trader posted the opposite quote. This can make the interface straightforward, but your execution depends on oracle updates, keeper availability, pool capacity and the protocol’s price-impact rules.

GMX documentation says that limit orders are executed by keepers when the oracle price reaches the trigger. During a fast move, an order can be skipped or execute differently from what you expected if the trigger condition is not met in the keeper’s execution window. GMX V2 uses linear PnL math rather than inverse perpetual math, an accounting choice that affects how profit and loss scales with the underlying price. Pool liquidity, open-interest limits and market configuration determine whether a requested position can be opened or increased.

Fees: compare the whole transaction, not one percentage

Hyperliquid’s published base rates and volume discounts

For perpetuals, the published base rates are 0.045% for a taker and 0.015% for a maker. These are defaults, not a promise that every account or market will receive those exact rates. A rolling 14-day weighted-volume tier can reduce the fee, and Hyperliquid says spot and perpetual activity is combined when determining that tier even though each product has a separate fee schedule. The documentation also says fees are directed to community mechanisms. Before submitting, confirm whether your order will be classified as maker or taker and which tier your account currently displays.

dYdX’s trailing-30-day tiers

dYdX calculates taker fees from total US-dollar volume during the previous 30 days across its perpetual order books. A high-volume trader can therefore pay a different rate from a new or inactive account. Maker and taker percentages are not a single universal number in the available documentation; read the current tier table in the dYdX interface. Since canceled orders are not charged, you can place and revise a limit order without paying a trading fee unless it executes. The no-gas default applies to trading, not necessarily every deposit, withdrawal or wallet operation.

GMX’s multi-part cost model

GMX requires a broader calculation. Depending on the action and market, costs can include the trading fee, price impact, funding, borrow fees, swap fees and the EVM network transaction fee. A pool can quote a favorable oracle price while still applying price impact when your trade changes the pool’s exposure or approaches a capacity limit. A position that appears inexpensive to open can become expensive to hold if borrow or funding accumulates, particularly when the market is crowded on one side.

For a realistic comparison, record the following before you trade:

  • Expected entry and exit price, including the displayed spread or price impact.
  • Maker or taker fee, or GMX trading and swap charges.
  • Current funding and borrow rates and whether they are charged continuously or at the protocol’s stated interval.
  • Network cost for the wallet transaction and any deposit or withdrawal conversion.
  • Estimated liquidation price after all initial fees and the amount of collateral you plan to leave in the account.

Compare the estimated round-trip cost for the same notional and holding period. Looking only at Hyperliquid’s 0.045% taker figure, dYdX’s tier label or GMX’s displayed trading fee can produce the wrong answer.

Liquidity, spread and price impact are market-specific

There is no single exchange-wide liquidity winner that guarantees the best execution. Liquidity is attached to a contract, side of the book, time of day and order size. A venue can lead aggregate perpetual volume while offering poorer depth for a particular altcoin than a smaller venue. Historical market-share figures, including figures reported for 2024 in a 2025 industry report, should not be presented as a current 2026 ranking.

How to evaluate an order book

For Hyperliquid and dYdX, inspect the bid-ask spread and the quantity available at each level. Compare the visible depth within a price band around the mid-market price with your intended order size. If your order consumes several levels, the volume-weighted average fill matters more than the best quote at the top of the book. A passive limit order can reduce the fee, but it may not fill, may fill only partially or may be left behind when the market moves.

How to evaluate a GMX pool

On GMX, look for the market’s available pool liquidity, open-interest limits, displayed price impact and the protocol’s execution conditions. A pool-based venue can provide predictable oracle pricing for small trades while applying materially different impact to a larger position. Check both directions: opening and closing may affect the pool differently, and a profitable position can still incur a large exit cost if capacity or price-impact settings have changed.

Why size and timing change the answer

During a news event, an order book can widen as market makers pull quotes, while an oracle-based system can delay or skip a keeper execution if trigger conditions are not satisfied. Conversely, an order book may offer several competing quotes for a liquid major contract while a pool has a simpler quote but less capacity. Test the exact size with the venue’s preview tool, and do not infer execution quality from a screenshot of another trader’s fill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leverage, liquidation and protocol risk

Leverage magnifies more than the initial loss

Leverage reduces the collateral required for a position but leaves you exposed to the full notional move. Trading fees, funding and borrow charges reduce effective collateral over time. As those costs accumulate, the liquidation price can move closer even if the underlying price is unchanged. Use isolated risk limits where available, keep a buffer above the displayed maintenance requirement and decide in advance where you will reduce or close the position.

GMX’s market-dependent collateral threshold

GMX documentation describes a minimum collateral threshold between 0.25% and 1% of position size, depending on the market configuration. That range is not a universal safe leverage rule: the applicable market, fees, funding, borrow and price movement determine the practical liquidation distance. Because GMX uses pool liquidity and oracle execution, review the market’s specific parameters before opening a position and recheck them if the protocol changes its configuration.

Order-book liquidation considerations

Hyperliquid and dYdX display order-book positions, but liquidation still depends on each protocol’s margin engine and market rules. A liquidation during a thin book can receive a worse price than the last traded price. Do not treat the visible top-of-book quote as a guaranteed liquidation price. Confirm the venue’s mark-price method, maintenance margin, insurance or backstop arrangements and any socialized-loss or deleveraging provisions in its current documentation.

Smart-contract, oracle and governance exposure

Decentralized execution removes reliance on a traditional broker but introduces protocol-specific failure modes. GMX users face smart-contract, oracle, keeper and pool-configuration risk. Hyperliquid and dYdX users face risks associated with their matching engine, chain operations, validators, bridges or account infrastructure. Governance can change fee schedules, supported markets, margin parameters and other defaults. Diversifying across venues does not eliminate these risks; it can add bridge and wallet complexity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chain, wallet and custody friction

GMX operates on supported EVM networks, so you need a compatible wallet, the correct network, enough native-token balance for transaction fees and any required token swap or approval. A failed or delayed transaction can leave an order unsubmitted while the market moves. Verify the chain selected in the wallet and the contract interaction shown in the signing window.

dYdX’s appchain workflow has different operational steps from an EVM transaction. Learn how deposits, withdrawals, account keys, validator connectivity and chain halts are handled before sending a large amount. The no-gas trading default does not mean every account operation is free.

Hyperliquid’s interface and account model also require you to understand where collateral is held, how deposits and withdrawals are authorized and what happens if the trading interface or chain is unavailable. For all three venues, use a wallet you control, record the exact network and asset, and make a small test transfer before committing funds you cannot afford to lose. Decentralization does not guarantee instant withdrawals, continuous uptime or recovery from a signing error.

Which exchange fits a particular trader?

Choose Hyperliquid when order-book visibility is your priority

Hyperliquid is the logical starting point if you want to see bids and asks, trade a broad set of active markets and evaluate a clearly published 0.015% maker or 0.045% taker base rate. It is especially suitable when you actively manage limit orders and can benefit from the rolling 14-day volume tier. Confirm the exact contract’s depth and your account’s current tier before assuming the base fee applies.

Choose dYdX when appchain operation and conventional tiers fit

dYdX fits traders who prefer a dedicated chain and a familiar maker-taker schedule based on trailing 30-day volume. It can be attractive if avoiding a separate gas charge for ordinary trades simplifies execution and if validator-and-staker fee allocation aligns with your expectations. You still need to understand the appchain’s deposit, withdrawal and availability model, and governance may change the defaults.

Choose GMX when oracle execution and pool liquidity are intentional choices

GMX is appropriate when you specifically want oracle-priced positions, keeper execution and self-custody on a supported EVM network rather than an order-book workflow. It can suit traders who value that model for the markets and sizes offered. In exchange, you must monitor price impact, pool capacity, borrow, funding, swap and network costs, as well as keeper-trigger behavior during rapid moves.

Use more than one venue only with a clear reason

Splitting activity can reduce dependence on one protocol, but it also creates multiple collateral balances, fee systems, wallets and liquidation engines to monitor. A hedge that appears neutral can carry different funding, borrow, oracle and settlement risks on each venue. Maintain a written record of notional exposure, collateral, entry price, liquidation price and recurring costs for every account.

A pre-trade comparison procedure

  1. Define the trade. Write down the contract, direction, notional size, intended leverage, expected holding time and maximum acceptable loss.
  2. Check the exact market. Confirm that the same underlying and settlement terms exist on each venue. Do not compare a major-asset contract with an illiquid altcoin and call the result general.
  3. Measure execution. For Hyperliquid and dYdX, inspect spread and depth at your size. For GMX, inspect oracle quote, price impact, pool capacity and keeper conditions.
  4. Calculate entry and exit costs. Include both sides of the trade, maker or taker fees, GMX trading or swap fees, expected funding or borrow and network transactions.
  5. Model liquidation. Enter the collateral, leverage and recurring charges in the venue’s calculator. Check how far the liquidation price is from your planned stop and leave a buffer.
  6. Verify wallet and chain details. Confirm the network, asset, destination, approvals and native-token balance for any required transaction.
  7. Start small. Place a test order or transfer, observe the fill and settlement, then increase size only if the realized result matches your estimate.
  8. Recheck volatile inputs immediately before signing. Fee tiers, funding, borrow, spreads, pool limits, supported markets and network conditions can change after you first compare them.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing headline fees only: add spread, impact, funding, borrow, swap and network costs to get a round-trip estimate.
  • Assuming aggregate volume equals liquidity: inspect the precise contract and your order size.
  • Treating a limit order as guaranteed maker execution: an order that crosses the spread can be classified as taker, and an unfilled order still leaves you without a position.
  • Ignoring GMX keeper behavior: a triggered limit order may be skipped or execute differently during a fast move; review the execution conditions.
  • Using the minimum collateral threshold as a target: the 0.25% to 1% GMX range is market-dependent and leaves little room for fees or volatility.
  • Forgetting recurring charges: funding and borrow can move liquidation closer even when price is flat.
  • Sending assets on the wrong network: a correct address on an incompatible chain may not recover the funds.
  • Relying on old rankings or fee screenshots: treat historical 2024 market-share data and old interface captures as background, not a 2026 decision rule.

How to make the final decision

Start with execution design, because it determines what you can observe and what can go wrong. Select an order-book venue if visible bids, asks and maker-taker control are central to your strategy. Select GMX if oracle pricing, keeper execution and pool liquidity are deliberate preferences and the supported EVM market meets your size requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then compare the live economics for one specific contract and notional. Record the displayed spread or price impact, entry and exit fees, expected funding or borrow, network cost and liquidation distance. The lowest published percentage is not automatically the lowest-cost trade.

Finally, evaluate operational and protocol risk: wallet and chain friction, custody and withdrawal procedures, oracle or keeper dependence, validator or matching-engine assumptions, governance powers and the consequences of an outage. Recheck all volatile inputs immediately before trading. On that basis, Hyperliquid is the strongest general starting point for order-book traders, dYdX is a strong alternative for appchain and conventional tier preferences, and GMX is the specialized choice for oracle-and-pool execution on supported EVM networks.
