They can deliver fast, frequent bursts of power while storing more energy than a conventional electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC). They are not a universal battery replacement: batteries usually remain the better fit when a device needs long-duration energy, a relatively flat output voltage, or maximum energy per kilogram.
How a hybrid supercapacitor works
A conventional EDLC stores energy electrostatically at the interface between an electrode and an electrolyte. A lithium-ion capacitor pairs an EDLC-type electrode with a battery-type lithium electrode. Nichicon’s 2024 technical article describes the design as combining EDLC construction with lithium-ion battery technology; Eaton’s 2025 white paper says one carbon-based electrode is replaced with a lithium-doped carbon electrode similar to a battery.
The asymmetric design is intended to sit between EDLCs and lithium-ion batteries: it aims to provide more energy and lower self-discharge than a conventional EDLC while retaining high power and faster cycling than a battery. Those are design goals, not guarantees for every cell; actual performance depends on the model and operating conditions.
How it compares with other storage options
The figures below come from different sources and are not a controlled, like-for-like test. Cell voltage window, temperature, current, and the definition of end of life can all affect reported performance.

| Technology | Specific energy | Reported cycle life | What the comparison suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid supercapacitor / LIC | Up to 77 Wh/kg in a 2026 peer-reviewed review by Staniak and Lewandowski; this is a reported LIC value, not a guarantee for every cell. | The 2026 review reports over 50,000 charge-discharge cycles. Eaton reports 250,000–500,000 cycles for its HS, HSL, and HSH families in 2025. These are separate reports, not a single universal rating. | A candidate when rapid power delivery and frequent cycling matter alongside more stored energy than a conventional EDLC. |
| Conventional EDLC supercapacitor | 1–5 Wh/kg, as reported by Analog Devices; publication date is not stated on its page. | 100,000+ cycles, as reported by Analog Devices; publication date is not stated on its page. | Useful for short-term backup, peak-current buffering, and energy recovery, but its lower energy density can limit duration. |
| Lithium-ion battery | 100–240 Wh/kg, as reported by Analog Devices; publication date is not stated on its page. | 500+ cycles, as reported by Analog Devices; publication date is not stated on its page. | Generally preferable when longer-duration stored energy or high energy per kilogram matters more than very frequent cycling. |
| LTO battery | Not stated in Nichicon’s October 1, 2024 comparison. | Not stated in Nichicon’s October 1, 2024 comparison. | Nichicon says the LTO batteries it compares have approximately twice the energy density of a hybrid supercapacitor, and notes LTO as an alternative when volumetric energy and stable output voltage matter. |
Specific energy in Wh/kg does not tell you how much space a device needs: for that, compare volumetric energy in Wh/L. Specific power in W/kg, charge and discharge time, self-discharge, equivalent series resistance (ESR), operating-temperature range, maximum working voltage, safety behavior, and calendar life also matter. The cited sources do not establish comparable values for those characteristics across all four technologies. Check the specific cell datasheets and system requirements rather than treating a technology label as a specification.
When a hybrid supercapacitor makes sense
Choose one for consideration when the load repeatedly demands a short, high-power burst, rapid recharge, or a large number of charge-discharge cycles. Eaton documents its HS, HSL, and HSH products for applications including pulse power, brownout ride-through, utility-meter radios, industrial process controllers, server and RAID-cache backup, and battery augmentation. Analog Devices likewise describes supercapacitors as options for short-term backup, peak-current buffering, and energy recovery.

- Compact Size: Measuring just 6.5x3.0x1.3cm, this bonded single capacitor supercapacitor module is compact and easy to integrate into your projects.
- Pulse loads: A short peak can be supplied by the capacitor while a battery or power source handles longer-duration demand.
- Ride-through: A storage element can bridge a brief interruption or brownout, provided its energy and power ratings cover the load and required hold-up time.
- Frequent cycling: A high cycle-life rating can be relevant where a storage element is charged and discharged often; confirm the rating’s test conditions and end-of-life threshold.
- Battery augmentation: A supercapacitor can handle brief power peaks while the battery supplies longer-duration energy. This system-level approach is distinct from a standalone LIC cell.
A battery is usually the stronger starting point if the main requirement is to run a load for a long time from stored energy, maintain a relatively flat output voltage, or maximize watt-hours per kilogram. A hybrid supercapacitor is most defensible when burst power, fast recharge, frequent cycling, temperature tolerance, or service life carries more weight. Temperature tolerance should be verified for the actual model; no comparable operating-temperature range is established by the cited figures.
Device-level LICs versus battery-supercapacitor systems
A lithium-ion capacitor is a single storage-device architecture with unlike electrodes. A battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy-storage system (HESS), by contrast, combines separate battery and supercapacitor components and coordinates how they share power. The system can use the supercapacitor for short bursts and the battery for longer-duration energy, but it needs suitable power electronics and control.

These are outcomes reported in that review’s assessment, and depend on system design and weighting assumptions; they are not guaranteed results for a particular installation or for an LIC cell on its own.
What to verify before selecting a cell or module
Do not choose by capacitance or cycle count alone. Start with the load profile and the complete system limits:

- Energy and power: Determine the required hold-up duration and peak current. Compare Wh/kg and Wh/L as well as W/kg, and account for conversion losses.
- Voltage range: Check operating voltage across the full charge and discharge cycle, not just maximum working voltage. Confirm the load can tolerate that range or will have a regulator.
- ESR and current: Verify resistance and permissible current against the pulse load; both affect voltage sag and heat.
- Charging and cycling: Confirm allowable charge current, recharge time, cycle-life test conditions, and the source’s end-of-life definition.
- Environment and service: Check operating-temperature limits, calendar-life data, self-discharge, and safety documentation for the exact part.
- System integration: Determine whether the series/parallel arrangement needs cell balancing, a controller, or other power electronics. Never assume a cell can be connected directly to a battery bus.
- Lifecycle cost: Compare the full system—including controls, power conversion, replacement interval, and maintenance—not just the cell’s purchase price.
Commercial examples and how to search
Eaton documents HS, HSL, and HSH hybrid-supercapacitor families. Its 2025 material gives a family-wide capacitance range of 3–1,400 F and a maximum working voltage of 3.8 V; individual part ratings differ. Eaton also describes series and parallel assembly for standalone storage or battery augmentation, so use the selected model’s datasheet when determining an arrangement.
For product discovery, useful search terms include “hybrid supercapacitor module” and “lithium-ion capacitor cell.” Verify that a listing identifies the actual part and supplies ratings for voltage, capacitance, balancing, ESR, temperature range, and any required controller. The 2026 review names SECH and VinaTech as commercial LIC examples, while Nichicon discusses LICs and LTO batteries; these references identify manufacturers or product lines, not verified marketplace listings.
